PHOENIX CINEMA

J U N E & J U LY 2 014

WELCOME
Our weekly features start with Jimmys Hall, the latest from master director
Ken Loach, the true life story of a notorious 1930s Irish Communists attempts
to open a dance hall in his home town. Join us for a Q&A with the director on
Wednesday 4 June.
The charming family-friendly The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet by the director
of Amelie is followed by Fanny Ardant in Bright Days Ahead, playing a married
woman who falls for a much younger man. Chef, a mouth-watering, hip-swaying,
laugh-out-loud hit with Dustin Hoffman and other stars is the best of summer
fun. In July look out for Boyhood, a warm, insightful film the Guardian calls an
outstanding achievement from director Richard Linklater.
Phoenix Nights, our monthly late night screening curated by guest hosts,
continues on 6 June and 4 July. Junes host is Empire Magazines Chris Hewitt,
whose cult selection is Evil Dead II.
On Sunday 8 June at 2pm meet famed novelist and authentic voice of the changing
world of London in the 60s, Nell Dunn, as she joins us for a rare screening of the
1965 BBC adaptation (coincidentally directed by Ken Loach) of her controversial
book Up the Junction.
June is wedding month and were plunging in with a preview of the fascinating 112
Weddings, which revisits couples long after the honeymoon is over. Q&A with
director Doug Block.

FROM FRIDAY 30 MAY

FROM FRIDAY 6 JUNE

Jimmys Hall 12A

Concussion 15

1hr 49. UK/Ireland/France 2014. Directed by Ken Loach. With Barry Ward,
Simone Kirby, Andrew Scott.

1hr 36. USA 2013. Directed by Stacie Passon. With Robin Weigert, Julie
Fain Lawrence, Maren Shapero, Micah Shapero, Janel Moloney, Funda Duval,
Claudine Ohayon.

Ken Loachs record 12th Cannes Film Festival entry, Jimmys Hall, tells the
true story of activist and campaigner James Gralton (Barry Ward, Songs for
Amy) and his fight against the religious establishment of 1930s Ireland. In 1921
Jimmy Graltons sin was to build a dance hall on a rural crossroads in Ireland
where young people could come to learn, to argue, to dream... but above all
to dance and have fun. The film is set eleven years later, when Jimmy returns
from a decade in New York and re-opens the hall, facing the powerful
opposition of the ruling class.

After awaking from a serious bout of concussion, Abby (Robin Weigert,

The Sessions) becomes desperate to break free from her sexually defunct
relationship with partner Kate. With a reignited desire for sexual pleasure
she establishes a second life as a high class prostitute in order to explore
her newfound passions. A bold directorial debut from Stacie Passon and an
engrossing performance by Weigert as the emotionally conflicted Abby.

Ken Loach will be joining us for a Q&A after the 6pm screening on
Wednesday 4 June.

FROM FRIDAY 6 JUNE

FROM FRIDAY 13 JUNE

Venus in Fur 15

The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet tbc

1hr 36. France/Poland 2013. Directed by Roman Polanski. With Emmanuelle

Seigner, Mathieu Amalric. In French and German with English subtitles.

1hr 45. France/Canada 2013. Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. With Helena

Bonham Carter, Robert Maillet, Callum Keith Rennie.

Directed by Roman Polanski, Venus in Fur is an exploration of performance,

power and sexual dominance. Alone in a theatre in Paris after a long day
of auditions Thomas (Mathieu Amalric, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, The
Grand Budapest Hotel) is presented with the seemingly scatty latecomer
Vanda (Emmanuelle Seigner, In the House, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly).
Vanda proceeds to seduce Thomas and transforms their initial power
relationship of director and actor into something more akin to temptress
and slave. Based on the Tony Award winning Broadway play by David Ives,
Venus in Fur is set entirely within the confines of a theatre as it seeks to blur
the definitions between stage and real life.

Jean-Pierre Jeunets The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet tells the story of
young child genius and inventor Tecumseh Sparrow Spivet (an excellent
performance by Kyle Catlett, in his first feature film role) and his solo
journey across the vast American heartlands to collect a coveted prize from
the Smithsonian museum. Young Spivet aims to seek new boundaries away
from his eclectic family comprised of a botanist mother (Helena Bonham
Carter, Les Misrables), a cowboy father and a wanna-be pop star sister,
whilst also escaping from the shadow cast by the death of his older brother
Layton. Jeunet draws on his trademark ability to bring youthful tales to life
with vivid colour and startling effects, as seen in his 2001 favourite Amelie, to
tell an eccentric and joyful film of youth and adventure.

FROM FRIDAY 20 JUNE

FROM FRIDAY 27 JUNE

Bright Days Ahead 15

Chef 15

1hr 34. France 2013. Directed by Marion Vernoux. With Fanny Ardant,
Laurent Lafitte, Patrick Chesnais. In French and English, with English subtitles.

1hr 54. USA 2014. Directed by Jon Favreau. With Jon Favreau, Sofa Vergara,
John Leguizamo, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Dustin Hoffman.

Recent retiree Caroline (Fanny Ardant, Paris, je taime) quickly becomes

bored with her life after work and starts looking for something new and
exciting to occupy her vast amounts of new found free time. After joining a
seniors club she meets local heartthrob Julien, putting the generation gap
to one side, they fall into a lustful post-marital affair. Things come crashing
down when Carolines husband Philipe (Patrick Chesnais, The Diving Bell and
the Butterfly) finds out and she is presented with a decision of sticking with
her age old love or risking all on Julien and the unknown. In this compact
and impassioned film, director Marion Vernoux manages to dig deep into
the emotions of isolation and depression and place them neatly next to
feeling of desire and purpose.

Having decided to quit his job as head chef at a top LA restaurant, Carl
Casper (Jon Favreau - directing and acting) sets up his own food truck,
where he can focus purely on making brilliant food. Casper takes his son
Percy and his friend Martin (John Leguizamo, Summer of Sam) on the
road with him to help rediscover his love of food. Favreau uses this foody
context to explore family relationships and a fathers desire to connect
with his son, whilst also making a few broadsides at the culture of criticism
in a social media dominated world. Chef is a slick, fast paced comedy with
an impressive cast list but top billing goes to the sumptuous and frankly
outrageous array of food presented in the film for you to drool at. Make
sure to reserve a spot at the cafe after the show!

Cold in July tbc

Boyhood tbc

1hr 49. USA/France 2014. Directed by Jim Mickle. With Michael C. Hall,
Sam Shepard, Don Johnson.

2hrs 43. USA 2014. Directed by Richard Linklater. With Patricia Arquette,
Ellar Coltrane, Ethan Hawke.

When trying to protect his family during a burglary, erstwhile Texan Richard
Dane (Michael C. Hall, Dexter) ends up killing the intruder. Having reported
the incident to the police Richard finds that the police start to use his case
in order to catch Russell, a more notorious criminal played by Sam Shepard
(Mud). The initially innocent Richard slowly comes to realise that he is
embroiled in a world of criminality and deceit that stretches above and
beyond his original case. The films story, based on the novel of the same
name by Joe Lansdale, shifts and twists throughout creating an atmosphere
of confusion and apprehension which is inevitably concluded in violent
justice. Cold in July is a stark thriller in the mould of a revenge Western and is
undoubtedly the strongest offering to date from young director Jim Mickle.

Hailed as one of the most astonishing achievements in the history of

cinema; Boyhood is one of the most powerful, original and interesting films
you are likely to see in 2014. Directed by Richard Linklater (Before Sunrise/
Sunset/Midnight), Boyhood was filmed over a period of 12 years and traces
the development of the life of Mason, the main character played by Ellar
Coltrane (Fast Food Nation), from childhood to becoming a teenager.
In returning to the same actor and drawing on some of his real life
developments, Linklater manages to convey the real tribulations of growing
up and coaxes out a completely convincing performance from Coltrane,
along with Ethan Hawke as Mason Sr. and Patricia Arquette as Masons
mother Olivia.

FROM FRIDAY 18 JULY

Finding Vivian Maier tbc

FROM FRIDAY 18 JULY

Cycling with Moliere tbc

1hr 23. USA 2013. Directed by John Maloof, Charlie Siskel. With Vivian
Maier, John Maloof, Mary Ellen Mark.

1hr 44. France 2013. Directed by Philippe Le Guay. With Fabrice Luchini,
Lambert Wilson, Maya Sansa. In French and Italian with English subtitles.

Finding Vivian Maier is a documentary which aims to give flesh to the shadow
of an artist. In 2007, amateur historian John Maloof purchased a box of
mysterious negatives which, after doing some research, he realised were
not only of a high quality but also possessed within them the story of a
brilliant and intensely private artist. Finding Vivian Maier manages to discuss
the sociological, historical and artistic value of Maiers photographs whilst
gradually unfolding the mystery of her life alongside. Interviews with family
and friends tell a story of an artist who found contentment in creating
brilliant art for its own sake and without the slightest consideration for
popular judgement perhaps the story of how an artist should be.

Cycling with Moliere tells the funny and heart warming story of two French
actors and friends Gauthier (Lambert Wilson, The Princess of Montpensier)
and Serge (Fabrice Luchini, In the House, Potiche), and their attempt to
rehearse Molieres The Misanthrope. With Gauthier being a successful
but mainstream actor and Serge as the unsuccessful purist, the pair play
out their own drama and seek to reconcile their differences as actors and
friends. From the director of The Women on the Sixth Floor, Cycling with
Moliere has already been a box office hit in France and with its quick wit and
thematic depth is sure to follow suit in the UK.

The Phoenix Cinema is one of the UKs oldest purpose-built,

continuously operating cinemas. Beneath the vaulted ceiling which
dates back to 1910, the history of film has been shared with millions
of audience members. From silent films with live music through two
world wars when newsreels were the only source of moving images that
captured events overseas; from the clicking reels of 24 frames a second
to the digital projection of today, the Phoenix has witnessed it all.
The other unique aspect of the Phoenix Cinema is that since 1985 it
has been run by a charitable trust on behalf of the local community.
Saved from the wreckers ball by the formation of The Phoenix Cinema
Trust, it is a wholly independent single screen cinema showing the latest
independent and foreign films and reinvesting its profits in education
work and maintaining the historic building.
