1.a. Distributive property
When multiplying a large number [i.e.
6(82)], split the number in half i.e.
(6x80) + (6x2)
Once you get the answers, add them
together. i.e. 6x80=480 and 6x2=12
480+12=492
Its as simple as that!

1.b. Associative property
The associative property is when you
have an equation with numbers that
switch out of parentheses on each side.
Why we use it: makes addition and
multiplication easier to do.
Addition: (7+2)+4=7+(4+2)
Multiplication: (5x7)5=7(5x5)

1.c. Commutative property
Commutative property is when
numbers on each side of the equal side
switch places.
Addition: 2+8 = 8+2
Multiplication: 4x5 = 5x4

2. Simplifying expressions
Why: Simplifying expressions make solving
equations easier to complete.
First: if there are parenthesis, do the math. For
example: 4(7x - 3) + 2x
28x - 12 + 2x > 30x - 12
4 x 7x = 28x 4 x -3 = -12

3. Solving equations
First look at the equation. See if any of the variables match each other.
If there are any variables that match, add them up using the signs in
front of them to determine if they are positive or negative.
And then proceed normally in doing a one step equation
i.e: 7x - 10 - 9x = -13 (add 7x + -9x. This equals -2x)
-2x - 10 = -13
-2x = -23
X = -21
+10 +10
+2 +2

Steps to solve...
Solve 5x/6 + x/3 - 1/2 = 11/6
1. Change fractions into whole numbers. For
example: (5x/6)6
2. Add/subtract like terms: 5x + 2x - 3 = 11
8x - 3 = 11
8x = 14
x = 1 3/4
+3 +3
/8 /8

Solve and Graph
2 < x/-5
1. Do the opposite. 2 x -5 = -10
2. Change the sign to its opposite. <
changes into >
Now graph -10 > x

-4x + 4 > -8
-4x + 4 > -8
-4x > -4
x > 1

Open Circle, Closed Circle
A closed circle is when the signs are no
more than or no less than. (< or >)
An open circle is when the signs are <
or > and when it says in a problem less
than or greater than.

2. Mark worked on Math homework
less than 1/3 the amount of time his
brother did. If Mark spent 25 min. on
his math homework, how much time
did his brother spend on his Math
homework?
x 1/3 = 25 25/1 x 1/3 = 8 1/3
x 1/3 x 1/3
Answer: 8 1/3 (Im confused)
