Sripuram Saraswathy Temple, Parippu, Kottayam

K. Anandaram

Sree puram Saraswathi temple is situated at Parippu, which is 9 Kilometers away from
the town of Kottayam, near the banks of the beautiful Meenachil River.

Temple History

The temple was built nearly a hundred years ago by a Brahmin lady named Meenakshy,
who was born in the Chenappady family that has hundreds of years of history. She was
the daughter of Smt.and Sri.Ramakrishna Iyer, and sister of Sri. Anantharama Iyer and
Harihara Iyer (Kuriyannor Madom).

Smt.Meenakshy got married at a very young age. Unfortunately, her husband passed
away due to some illness, completely changing Meenakshy’s life.

Meenakshy stayed with her brother Anantha Rama Iyer for a few years. During that
period, she fell ill with Small Pox. Meenakshy was an ardent devotee of Madhura
Meenakshy. Madhura Meenakshy was said to be appeared in her dream many times and
to everybody’s surprise, she was cured of small pox within no time. That was a huge
tuning point in her life. After that incident, she came to Kuriyannoor Madom as per the
request of her other brother Harihara Iyer. During her stay at Kuriyannoor, Meenakshi
spent all the time engaging in prayers, pooja and drawing ‘Sree Chakram’. She happened
to recieve a vigraham (idol) of Saraswathy and with the help of her in-laws, a temple was
built near the Kuriyannoor Madom and the prathista karmas were performed. She
continued her poojas and prayers there. Many devotees joined her in her prayers. She
composed many sthothras on Madhura Meenakshy & goddesses Saraswathy in the form
of Keerthanas and lilved like a saint.
For many years after Meenakshi’s passing away, the temple pooja’s were not performed
consistently. The family members handed over the temple and related properties to
theTravancore Devaswam Board. Now the temple is under the control of the Parippu
Mahadevar temple and under the governance of the Travancore Devaswam Board.
Pooja’s are performed only in the mornings.

During the Navarathri season, The Chenappady and Kuriyannor family members
conjointly perform special poojas throughout the 9 days, with the help of the Khsetra
advisory committee and all the devotees at Parippu.
