Death, Grave, Punishment and

Life After Death

Life ends with death. Mola Aliasws
says1 every grain you eat is
predestined for you and you are
the diet of the death, with
punishment for the unsuccessful
and reward for the successful
ones, as Allahazwj Says in the
following Verses:

Say: If a home in the Hereafter
with God is exclusively yours

long for death if you are so

A non-believer will be reluctant
to leave this world and will not
look forward to the life after

However,
for
a
momin/momina this life is like a
prison and he/she always
desires for transferring to his/her
eternal residence where a
luxurious life with countless
bounties and blessings have
been guaranteed, but more
importantly an eternal proximity
to Masomeenasws is the reality,
which makes a momin restless

A person requested Amir-ulto
explain
momaneenasws
implications of death, Imamasws
replied:
A person would
encounter one of three scenarios
after death, either he gets good
news about eternal blessings
and peace, or is given bad news
for everlasting punishment or
(the third one) remains in grief
and fear without being informed
about his fate in the hereafterwithout knowing which category
he belongs to (Kafir or momin).
Our devout follower will get the
good news for eternal bounties
www.hubeali.com

but our enemy will be told only

about
his
never
ending
punishment. The one who will
not be told about his fate will be
that Momin who had polluted
his/her soul with Allahazwjs
forbidden deeds and will be in
doubt about his future and will
perceive terrible outcome after
getting ambiguous and fearful
messages. Allahazwj will not put
him together with our enemies
but will release him from hell fire
through our intersession. Thus,
O my followers, keep on doing
good deeds, obey Allahazwj, and
do not become careless through
self-reliance (on your deeds).
Do not underestimate Allahazwjs
wrath because there will be
some among third category
sinner musrafeen (who were
careless) who will not get our

intercession and will get three

hundred
thousand
years
punishment in the hell prior to
being pardoned.2

die? Imamasws replied because

they are unaware of reality of
death and its bounties. Surely,
they will like it if they are true
believers and obey Allahazwj and
would recognise life in the
hereafter is far better than what
they are used to (in this world).
They may be exemplifying by
such a child or an insane person
who would not like to take a
medicine, although it is going to
cure his illness and provide him
comfort. If they knew how much
better off they will be in the
hereafter they would certainly
wish to die, their desire would be
more intense as compared with
that patient who is desperate for
health and life.3

It is narrated from Imam

Mohammed Baqirasws, If Allahazwj
wants to raise His servants
status in the hereafter who has
committed some sins in his life,
Allahazwj makes him either ill in
this world or let him suffer from
the lack of resources, or, instead
will make death more painful for
him. Allahazwj does this to
eradicate His servants sins so
he is raised in the hereafter
without any burden of sins. But
if Allahazwj wants to disgrace
someone in the hereafter who
has done some good deeds in
his life, Allahazwj awards this
fellow with good health, or
increases his sustenance, or
otherwise makes death easier
for him in order to payback the

Once Imam AbuAbdullahasws

Imamasws
replied: The Nutfa23 from which

It is narrated from Imamasws
through a chain of narrators:
When you want to wash a dead
body then put the body on a
bathing table facing the Qiblah, If
he is wearing shirt then cut it so
that his hands may be brought
www.hubeali.com

39

out of his shirt and put his hands

on his loins (Sharam Ghah), and
spread them from there to his
legs in order to cover his legs
towards knee area. But if he
was not wearing a shirt then
cover his body (from loins area
to knees) with a thick cloth, i.e.,
a shirt, and put some berry
leaves in a washtub and start
pouring some water on it and stir
it with your hands until you see
some foam rising from it. And
pour some water out of smaller
tub into a bigger bath-Tub
(Tasht) but without the foam
mixture (and leafs) and dilute it
with fresh water, then start with
washing bodys hands up the
elbow, three times, clean them
as one would wash body during
the ritual bath (Ghusal-ejanabat) then wash its genitals

40

and purify it (taking hands

underneath
cloth
without
exposing private parts), then
wash bodys head with taking
foam water from the smaller tub
and rinse its head thoroughly
while taking extra care to stop
any water reaching bodies
nostrils and its ears.
Then
turned the body on its left side,
and pour water on its right hand
side starting from its head to
toes such a way water flows
from right side of the head to the
feet while gently rubbing the
body, stomach and back, repeat
it three times. The same, to be
repeated after laying the body on
its right hand side. Then discard
the remaining water from the
bigger tub and wash it by normal
water. Wash your both hands
up to elbows.
www.hubeali.com

41

Then prepare camphor water by

pouring fresh water in the tub
and mixing some camphor
grains in the water. Then wash
the body, like before, three time,
starting with its hands, then its
genitals, head, left-hand posture
and right-hand posture, (as
before), wash its abdomen very
gently, if anything comes out,
just clean it.
Then wash the tub with fresh
water as well as your hand up to
elbows, and then wash body
again with fresh water, following
the previous sequence (hands,
genitals, head, left-hand posture,
right-hand posture).
After completion of bath, dry the
whole body with a dry cloth and
put some camphor on cotton
layers/sheet and put cotton
sheet on its genitals and prepare

a cotton pad put it underneath

(under anal area) in order
absorb any discharge, and then
take a piece of cloth and make a
lungi (under wear) and cover
bodys waist to knee area with it
so that no fluid comes out of
body.25

Abdullah Bin Sinan says, I asked

should I cover the dead with the

cloth to be wrapped around
bodys genitals (to cover both

extra cotton at rear area (for the
purpose of stopping any fluid

the lion cloth? Imamasws replied:
Actually, the wrapper cloth is not
an essential part of shroud, it is
given to the body so that body
fluid may not come out. It is only
used for this reason. Then it is

better to use cotton shroud.

appropriate to pray for the

Yes, some times it helps them,

When you pray for them,
Allahazwj relieves them from their
difficulties and also informs them
the relief comes to you as a
result of your brother so and so
has done such and such on your
