MOTIVATION

Motivation
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is an emerging technology
WSNs Applications:
Environmental monitoring, Home automation, Hospital
environment
However, performance of these WSNs depends upon: However, performance of these WSNs depends upon:
Quality of Wireless Link, Built-in Antenna available
Not a clear Line-of-Sight (LOS)
LOS is not present between sender and receiver
Results in Fading of Signal and Multipath Propagation
Antenna Diversity is a way to increase quality and reliability of
wireless link
3
Our Contribution
We design a new radio module, an Inverted F-Antenna for
2.4 GHz wireless sensor networks
We perform extensive indoor and outdoor experiments
Indoor Office Environment, Reverberation Chamber,
RF Anechoic Chamber, Outdoor Garden Environment RF Anechoic Chamber, Outdoor Garden Environment
We propose an Intelligent Antenna Selection Strategy
In this strategy, wireless sensor nodes predict the value s of
RSSI for both built-in and external antenna
This technique is based on EWMA

Methodology and Implementation
Setup
We study the behaviour of RSSI in four environments
Indoor Office Environment, Reverberation Chamber,
RF Anechoic Chamber, Outdoor Garden Environment
We Consider TelosB motes
Equipped with Chipcon CC2420 radio module Equipped with Chipcon CC2420 radio module
We use RSSI as link quality metric
We consider two types of Telosb motes (i) sink mote (ii)
sending mote
Total 100 packets were sent
3 different power levels were used: 0 dBm, -10 dBm, and -25
dBm

Concluding Remarks
Results show that when dealing with different environments
(four environments), we observed fluctuations on RSSI for
both antennas
If external antenna is used, the gain in RSSI is significant
This provide us the basis to exploit antenna diversity
Results also confirm that if external antenna is used, the gain
of RSSI is significant
If a proper strategy is designed to change the intelligent
antenna selection decision adaptively, we can achieve higher
gain

CONCLUSION AND FUTURE
WORK
21
Conclusion and Future Work
We have discussed our results of newly designed antenna
and built-in antenna of TelosB mote
If external antenna is used, the gain in RSSI is significant
We performed extensive experiments in both indoor and
outdoor environments outdoor environments
We proposed EWMA based intelligent antenna selection
strategy
As plan of future work, we want to integrate software
defined switching capability to TelosB motes
