DISCOVER THREE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES
UNESCO has included 38 witnesses of the history of human-
kind in its list of World Heritage Sites in Germany three of
these lie in and around Hildesheim. St. Michaels Church, one
of the most beautiful early Romanesque churches in Germa-
ny, together with St. Marys Cathedral and the Cathedral
Treasures preserve a unique ensemble of mediaeval deco-
rative art in Hildesheim. In 2014/2015, you will be able to
marvel at the Cathedral and Cathedral Museum shining in a
new radiance after ve years of construction.
One of the industrial monuments distinguished by UNESCO,
which is still a producing centre today, is a one of a kind in
the world. The Fagus Factory in Alfeld, the rst large build-
ing by the Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius counts as the
initial building marking the birth of Modernism. Another
UNESCO World Heritage Site is only 55 kilometres away: the
Upper Harz Water Regale, the Old Town and the Rammels-
berg mountain in Goslar.
SOAKING IN THE HISTORY
A cup of coee on the historic market square will give you
the feeling of going back to past centuries. Be impressed by
the famous Knochenhauer-Amtshaus (Butchers Guild Hall)
and the nearby reconstructed half-timbered houses. Narrow
alleyways planted with roses, buckled half-timbered houses
and the bordering green ramparts and burial sites. A walk
through the Hildesheim half-timbered district will give you
a sense of the original splendour. In the anniversary year,
history will be revealed in a special way with numerous
events and initiatives. Impressive palaces, castles, monas-
teries and churches give the region a distinctive prole. The
Marienburg Castle is widely known and is one of the most
signicant Neo-Gothic historic buildings in Germany.

tinations well worth visiting. The capital of the state, Hano-

The renowned Roemer- und Pelizaeus-Museum with its
world famous Ancient Egyptian collection is known well
beyond the borders of the region. In the theatre scene,
Hildesheim is known for its Theater fr Niedersachsen (TfN)
(Theatre for Lower Saxony). However, there are also many
small museums, galleries and cultural institutes to discover
in the region. Cultural festivals, markets and feasts delight
their public and, especially for the citys anniversary in
2015, events are queuing up. Visitors especially value the
top-class music events in the historic park and monastery
complexes in the region, such as the Fredener Musiktage or
the Lamspringer September

LOVELY PROSPECTS: HILDESHEIM 2015
THE OCCASION
It was in 815 that Hildesheim was founded as the new see
of a bishopric. This event is closely linked to the legend
of the 1000-year-old rosebush. The Emperor Louis the
Pious is said to have found a precious reliquary he had
lost during hunting, between the owers of the rosebush.
He had a chapel built at this site in honour of the Mother
of God, Mary forming the nucleus of the bishopric and
city of Hildesheim. The roots of Hildesheims identity lie
in the founding of the diocese linked to the legend of the
Hildesheim rosebush. This is why Hildesheim is celebrat-
ing its 1,200th anniversary in 2015, together with the Di-
ocese of Hildesheim.
A major event is coming up: in 2015, the city and diocese of Hildesheim are both celebrating their 1,200th birthday. Look
forward to a colourful anniversary programme!
The re-opening of St. Marys Cathedral in August 2014
will start o the festivities of the Diocese of Hildesheim.
After ve years of building, the UNESCO World Heritage
church will re-open and radiate its new glory. Although
the Premiere of the Oratorio Lux in tenebris Light in
Darkness is only one of the concerts and events, which
will take place in the Mariendom, it will surely be the
highlight. But it is not only St. Marys Cathedral which
has been restored and transformed; the nearby Antonius
Church has also been relocated to the Cathedral Muse-
um the new Cathedral Museum with its important art
treasures will be opened in April 2015 (also see oers re-
lated to the Cathedral and Cathedral Museum on page 19).
9 Hildesheim 2015
JOIN US IN THE CELEBRATIONS
YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME
Both new events and events conceived especially for the
citys anniversary await you in Hildesheim in 2015. The thea-
tre production of In the Name of the Rose will make a stage
of the entire city. On 11 July, the premiere of the City Space
Open Air Stations Theatre Extravaganza will be celebrated.
The public will move through the city from one performance
location to another, all these unwittingly transformed into
stages. By the beginning of August, ten four-hour long per-
formances are planned. The opening of the exhibition, The
Roots of the Rose, is planned for the end of March and will
be hosted at the Roemer- and Pelizaeus-Museum, another
major event of the citys anniversary. It is dedicated to the
development of Hildesheim from a bishops seat to a mu-
nicipality in the early and High Middle Ages. Hildesheim
is looking forward to over 200,000 guests for the Tag der
Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony Day). At this state feast cele-
brating voluntary work, there will be a unique opportunity
to experience the Hildesheim city atmosphere through nu-
merous initiatives and presentations.
However, this is not all. Successful, already established, oc-
casions such as the popular street artists festival, Paster-
zauber, will be integrated in the anniversary year. Over 65
national and international artists, acrobats, magicians and
jugglers, clowns and comedians, variet artists and sing-
er-song writers will transform the Hildesheim town centre
into a big, colourful stage, enchanting both younger and old-
er visitors. There will also be a lot of open-air art events hap-
pening during the Hildesheimer Wallungen (Hildesheim
Goes up the Wall). This popular cultural festival transforms
the Hildesheim ramparts, the nearby Ernst-Ehrlicher-Park
and the half-timbered lanes into a stage. Music, art, litera-
ture, theatre, dance, performances and walk acts are an invi-
tation to marvel and stroll about.
The four-day festival of lighting art, Lichtungen Licht.
Kunst.Fest, from 5 to 8 November, is the spectacular win-
dup of the anniversary year. International artists, together
with partners from Hildesheim, provide for artistic lighting
installations and lighting design in buildings and various
squares in the city.
Around 100 other events grouped under the leading theme
of City Feeling will enrich Hildesheims cultural life from
March to November. Everything that makes up Hildesheim
and is most closely linked to the city will be reected in the
anniversary events in dierent ways. Be there when a whole
city celebrates its birthday!

THE EMERGENCE OF THE WORLD
EGYPTS LAST MYTH OF CREATION
What happened before creation? How did time and space
come about and who is their creator? These are some of the
questions on the emergence and continuity of the world
that the last great myth of creation of the Ancient Egyptians
ask: the famous Book of Faiyum. For several decades, an in-
ternational team of experts have dedicated themselves to
deciphering this papyrus with its impressive texts and pic-
tures, which was discovered in the Egyptian oasis of Faiyum
in the middle of the 19th century. Today, the two main por-
tions are in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore and in the
Pierpont Morgan Library & Museum in New York. Two other
portions are in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
From 13 September 2014 until 11 January 2015 the Roemer-
und Pelizaeus-Museum is presenting this amazing papyrus
in Europe for the rst time supplemented by a series of in-
ternational objects on loan. These objects serve to transform
the unusual images in the papyrus into three-dimensional
objects, installations and interactive exhibition elements
in the special exhibition: The Emergence of the World
Egypts Last Myth of Creation. The exhibition conveys a sur-
prising and, to some extent, very modern seeming picture of
Ancient Egyptian culture, which goes far beyond pyramids,
pharaohs and mummies.
In this exhibition, children and adults, groups and individ-
ual visitors can embark on a journey through the Ancient
Egyptian universe, meet the gods and experience the rebirth
of the sun god in the form of a crocodile and thereby also
witness creation.

THE ROOTS OF THE ROSE EXHIBITION ON THE OCCASION
OF THE ANNIVERSARY: 1200 YEARS OF HILDESHEIM
The exhibition in the Roemer- and Pelizaeus-Museum, from
31 March to 4 October 2015, presents the rst ve centuries
of Hildesheims development and this constitutes the his-
torical basis for the citys anniversary.
With the founding of a bishopric in 815, the foundation
stone for one of the oldest and most culturally far-reaching
settlements in northern Germany was laid: Hildesheim. The
founding of the bishopric is reected in the legend of the
Thousand-Year-Old Rose that is still blooming to this very
day. Visitors of the exhibition can follow the trail of the Mid-
dle Ages and the impact of this epoch up to modern times
and also discover the historical Roots of the Rose.
The exhibition links the cultural history of Hildesheim, with
its outstanding architectural and artistic testimonials, to
the social and political history of the city. New archaeolog-
ical nds and precious exhibits show the path from seat of
a bishopric in the early and High Middle Ages up to 1350.
A reference to todays cityscape shows that European his-
tory was quasi taking place in front of our house door and
this can still be felt even today. In this sense, the exhibition
also makes Hildesheims special role as an ecclesiastic and
secular seat of power in the mediaeval history and culture
of northern Germany an exciting experience for visitors
coming from abroad. Modern media, guided tours and in-
teractive elements, a Middle Ages Laboratory, for example,
round o the presentation.

Visit the building that was the origin of modern industrial
architecture. The then young and unknown architect, Wal-
ter Gropius, wanted to build more than a shoe last factory

of steel and glass, the architect succeeded in giving the buil-
ding a completely unusual appearance, deviating from the
traditional one. For over 100 years, this industrial building
has been producing, in addition to shoe lasts, measuring
systems, re protection systems and nger joint systems.

BOOKING FORM FOR PACKAGE DEALS
38 For planning you journey Conditions of travel
Dear Tourist,
The following terms and conditions of package travel apply to pack-
age of-fers (totality of travel services pursuant to 651a par. 1 BGB
(German Civil Code)). Insofar as they are deemed by the statutory
provisions to have been agreed with legal eect, they are contents
of the tourist travel contract between you, called the Tourist below,
and us as tourist travel organizer, tourist-information Hildesheim,
abbreviated to ti Hi below, that is formed in accordance with the
statutory provisions of 651a m BGB when you book travel. There-
fore, please read these provisions care-fully.
1. Conclusion of the Tourist Travel Contract
1.1. The Tourist submits his or her reservation preference to ti Hi,
orally or by letter, by fax, e-mail or internet. This preference is not
yet binding on the Tourist and does not yet constitute an oer that
is binding on the Tourist. In the case of elec-tronic reservations that
are marked as binding, the Tourist immediately receives a conrma-
tion of reservation electronically.
1.2. In accordance with the Tourists reservation preference, ti Hi
sends the Tourist a denite oer with services, prices and times by
e-mail (or by telephone for last minute oers) and makes a binding
oer to the Tourist of a tourist travel contract that is based on the
descriptions in the oer.
1.3. The tourist travel contract becomes legally binding on the Tour-
ist and ti-Hi as soon as and provided that the Tourists unconditional
declaration of acceptance of the oer as is (without any additions,
restrictions or other changes) is received by ti-Hi by letter, fax or
e-mail within the time period allowed by ti-Hi for ac-ceptance of
the oer. The oer can also be accepted by telephone if this is stated
in the oer (for last minute reservations). The tourist travel contract
becomes le-gally binding when the Tourists declaration of accept-
ance is received by ti-Hi. The Tourist is then sent, without delay, con-
rmation of receipt of this declaration as well as the guarantee cer-
ticate prescribed by law. Please note that the tourist travel contract
is binding even if this conrmation from ti-Hi is not received.
1.4. If the Tourists declaration of acceptance contains any additions,
restrictions or other changes relative to the oer from ti-Hi, then a
legally binding contract has not yet been formed. Instead, this dec-
laration from the Tourist constitutes a new oer by the Tourist that
is binding on the Tourist for a period of 10 days. A tourist travel con-
tract is formed on the basis of this oer only if and when ti-Hi ac-
cepts this oer within this time period by letter, fax, e-mail or, with
last minute travel, by telephone.
1.5. The person making the reservation is liable for all obligations
under the tourist travel contract of any other tourists registered in
this contract insofar as he or she has assumed this responsibility by
explicit separate written declaration.
2. Payment, Guarantee Certicate
2.1. Payments of or toward the travel price may be demanded or
accepted before the travel ends only if the guarantee certicate of
651k par. 3 BGB has been issued to the Tourist.
2.2. However, as exceptions to point 2.1, the guarantee certicate of
651k par. 3 BGB does not have to be issued to the Tourist if
a) the trip does not last longer than 24 hours, includes no over-
night stays and the travel price is at most 75, or
b) if there is an agreement that, as an exception to points 2.3 and
2.4 below, the entire travel price is not due for payment until the trip
is over and if the travel services under the contract do not include
transportation of any Tourist s from their place of residence to the
holiday destination or from the holiday destination back to their
place of residence.
2.3. When the contract has been concluded (receipt by ti-Hi of the
Tourists declara-tion of acceptance) and the guarantee certicate
has been delivered to the Tour-ist, then a deposit in the amount of
10% of the travel price is due for payment and will be credited to the
entire travel price.
2.4. Payment of the balance is due 2 weeks before the travel begins,
when it is clear that the trip will be conducted, and, in particular, can
no longer be cancelled for any of the reasons stated in point 7.2.
2.5. If advance payments have been agreed, if the guarantee certi-
cate has been de-livered, if the Tourist does not have a contractual or
statutory right of retention and if ti-Hi is prepared and in a position
to render the contractually agreed ser-vices, then
a) the Tourist has a right to the contractually agreed services only
if the travel price has been paid in full, and
b) if the agreed advance payments have not been received by ti-Hi
on time and have not been made even after ti-Hi has sent a remind-
er that sets a reasonable period of grace, then ti-Hi can withdraw
from the tourist travel contract and charge the Tourist withdrawal
costs pursuant to point 5.3 of these standard terms and conditions
for oers of pack-age travel.
3. Services
3.1. ti-His obligation to render services is based solely on a) the
contents of the con-rmation of reservation and the descriptions in
brochures and/or ti-His oer that this conrmation refers to, b) any
descriptions to which these brochures or the of-fer refer and c) any
agreements concluded with the Tourist in writing or orally with le-
gally binding eect.
3.2. The organizations that render services directly (e.g. providers of
accommoda-tions, meals, sports, and transportation, cultural and
leisure time facilities) are not authorized by ti-Hi to give assuranc-
es or make agreements that go beyond or are contrary to the travel
descriptions of ti-Hi, ti-His oer or its conrmation of reser-vation
or that modify the conrmed contents of the tourist travel contract.
3.3. Brochures, yers, etc. other than those published by ti-Hi, such
as brochures, yers, etc. from the destination or hotel, are not bind-
ing on ti-Hi unless and then only to the extent they have been made
a part of the contractually agreed ser-vices through an express
agreement between ti-Hi and the Tourist.
4. Changes of Services
Changes and deviations from the agreed contents of the tourist trav-
el contract which become necessary after the contract was agreed
and that have not been brought about by ti-Hi contrary to good faith,
are permissible insofar as they are not substantial, do not lead to a
signicant change in the travel services and do not impact the overall
form of the travel that has been reserved. Warranty claims, if any, are
not aected by this when the changed services are decient. Ti-Hi is
obliged to inform the Tourist of such changes and deviations with-
out delay. When appropriate, Ti-Hi will oer the Traveller a change of
reservation or withdrawal from the contract free of charge.
5. Withdrawal by the Tourist, Change of Reservation
5.1. The Tourist can withdraw from the trip at any time before it
begins. The date on which ti-Hi receives the Tourists declaration of
withdrawal is decisive. Tourists are advised to declare such a with-
drawal in written form.
5.2. In all cases of withdrawal by the Tourist, ti-Hi is entitled to the
compensation stated below for the travel arrangements that have
already been made and for ti His other expenses, whereby this com-
pensation already takes account of the amounts that are usually
saved by selling the vacated services to other tourists.
Standard Withdrawal Charge for Packages with Accommodation in
Hotels, Inns and Guest Houses
withdrawal up to day 30 before trip begins 10% of travel price
withdrawal up to day 15 before trip begins 30% of travel price
withdrawal up to day 8 before trip begins 40% of travel price
withdrawal up to day 1 before the trip begins 60% of travel price
withdrawal on the day the trip begins 80% of travel price
Tourist does not begin the trip 80% of travel price
5.3. However, the Tourist still has the right to prove that ti-HI did not
incur any ex-penses or that the expenses incurred were much less
than the standard charges stated above, in which case the Tourist
only has to pay this lesser amount.
5.4. In lieu of compensation equal to the standard withdrawal
charge stated above, ti Hi has the option under law of asserting a
claim for compensation for damages that are equal to the expens-
es that ti Hi actually incurred for the trip in question. In this case
the compensation to be paid can be greater than the standard
with-drawal charge stated above. Then ti-Hi must notify the Tour-
ist of its individual expenses and prove that they were actually in-
curred.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR OFFERS OF PACKAGE
TRAVEL BY TOURIST-INFORMATION HILDESHEIM
39 Conditions of travel For planning your journey
5.5. When a Tourist requests certain types of changes to a tourist
travel contract after this contract has been agreed, ti-Hi can charge
15 for each change that is made. This is possible for change of travel
dates within the time period for which the trip has been advertised,
change of accommodations, change of meals (e.g. full board, half
board, just breakfast) and changes in additional services that are
reserved (e.g. concert and theatre tickets).
5.6. The foregoing regulations do not aect the Tourists right under
the law (651b BGB) to provide a substitute tourist for the trip when
the Tourist withdraws.
5.7. Tourists are urged to take out travel cancellation expenses in-
surance.
6. Services Not Used
If a Tourist does not use certain tourist travel services because of
early return travel or other compulsory reasons, then ti-Hi will en-
deavour to obtain from the relevant services providers reimburse-
ment of expenses that are saved because of the Tourists non-par-
ticipation. Ti-Hi is not obliged to do this if the monetary amounts in
question are totally insignicant or reimbursement would conict
with statutory or governmental regulations.
7. Withdrawal and Cancellation by the Tourist Travel Organizer
7.1. After a Tourist has begun the trip, ti-Hi can cancel the tourist
travel contract with-out notice if the Tourist continually disrupts
the conduct of the trip even though ti Hi or an authorized repre-
sentative has warned the Tourist, or the Tourists con-ducts him or
herself contrary to the contract in such a way that immediate can-
cel-lation of the contract is justied. If ti-Hi then cancels, it contin-
ues to be entitled to the travel price, but must still reimburse any
expenditures that are saved as well as any other benets obtained
by use in some other way of the services that were reserved, where-
by this also includes any refunds from services providers.
7.2. If, for a given trip, ti Hi does not obtain reservations from the
minimum number of participants stated in the tourist travel de-
scription, ti-Hi can cancel this trip and then withdraw from the con-
tract under the following conditions:
a) The minimum number of participants is stated in the conr-
mation of reservation or this conrmation refers the Tourist to the
corresponding statement in the advertisement of the trip;
b) ti-Hi is obliged to notify the Tourist in writing and without de-
lay that the trip is being cancelled when it is clear that the mini-
mum number of participants will not be reached, whereby ti-Hi
must exercise this can-cellation option at least two weeks before
the trip is scheduled to begin.
c) When the trip is cancelled, each tourist aected has the right to
de-mand participation in another trip of the same or greater value
insofar as ti-Hi is in a position to oer the Tourist such a trip from its
pro-gramme without additional charge. Upon receiving the cancel-
lation no-tice, the Tourist must assert this right vis--vis ti Hi with-
out delay.
8. Limitation of Liability
The contractual liability of ti Hi for damages that do not constitute
bodily injury is limited to three times the travel price if
a) the damage sustained by the Tourist was not brought about by
inten-tional or grossly negligent conduct, or
b) ti-Hi is responsible for the damages sustained by the Tourist
solely be-cause a services provider is at fault.
9. Obligations of the Tourist, (Complaints, Cancellation,
Exclusion Period)
9.1. The Tourist is obliged to notify ti-Hi of any deciencies and to
demand corrective action without delay. If ti Hi is not notied with-
out delay, the Tourist loses his or her rights unless the Tourist is
not at fault for this failure to lodge a complaint di-rectly with ti Hi
without delay. Please note that it is not sucient to lodge the com-
plaint with the relevant services provider, such as the provider of
overnight accommodations. The complaint must be lodged directly
with ti Hi.
9.2. If the trip is signicantly impaired as a result of a deciency
or if a particular Tour-ist cannot reasonably be expected to put up
with such a deciency for an im-portant reason that ti Hi is able to
perceive, then the Tourist can cancel the tour-ist travel contract in
accordance with the statutory provisions (651e BGB).
9.3. Claims of the Tourist because certain travel services were not
rendered in ac-cordance with the contract may be made only after
the trip is over and must then be received by ti Hi within one month
of the day on which the trip was scheduled to end. Claims must be
asserted vis--vis ti Hi at the address given below. The deadline for
asserting claims cannot be met by notifying the relevant services
providers, such as, in particular, the provider of overnight accom-
modations. The tourist is urged to assert his or her claims in writing.
The Tourist loses all rights unless the Tourist is not at fault for failure
to lodge a complaint directly with ti Hi on or before the deadline.
10. Limitation Period
10.1. Claims of the Tourist based on loss of life, bodily injury or dam-
age to health due to intentional or negligent violation of duty on the
part of ti-Hi or any of its legal representatives or assistants are sub-
ject to a limitation period of two years. This also applies to claims
for compensation for other damages based on intentional or gross-
ly negligent violation of duty on the part of ti-Hi or any of its legal
repre-sentatives or assistants.
10.2. All other claims pursuant to 651c f BGB are subject to a limi-
tation period of one year.
10.3. The limitation periods of points 10.1 and 10.2 begin on the day
on which the trip was scheduled to end in accordance with the con-
tractual agreements.
10.4. When negotiations between the Tourist and ti Hi about the
claim or the circum-stances that might justify the claim are in pro-
gress, the limitation period is sus-pended until the Tourist or ti Hi
refuses to continue the negotiations. When sus-pension of the limi-
tation period ends, the claim cannot become statute barred un-til at
least three months have elapsed since the end of suspension.
11. Choice of Law and Place of Jurisdiction
11.1. The entire legal and contractual relationship between ti Hi and
the Tourist is governed sole-ly by the laws of the Federal Republic of
Germany.
11.2. The Tourist can sue ti Hi only at ti His ocial seat of business.
Legal proceedings against the Tourist can only be taken at the Tour-
ists place of residence. In cases of legal proceed-ings against tourists
who are merchants, legal entities under public or private law, or per-
sons whose place of residence or usual abode lies outside Germa-
ny or whose place of res-idence or usual abode is not known at the
time litigation is led, jurisdiction for ti His ocial seat of business
is deemed to have been agreed.
11.3. The foregoing provisions do not apply insofar as internation-
al treaties or conventions or provisions of the laws of the European
Union that are to be applied to travel contracts pro-vide for or imply
something else that is more advantageous to the Tourist as a con-
sumer.
