33rd Annual Walnut Festival Parade

For this cruise we met at Denny’s at 7:30 am and left

at 8 am. Not having been to this parade before we use
the directions on the map the City of Walnut sent us
and it was okay because we arrived there in no time at
all. We traveled the on the 10 freeway west, 57 south,
and exit at Brea Canyon Road.
For the last several years the City of Walnut
has invited our club to participate in the Walnut
Festival Parade and each time we were committed to a
scheduled event so we were not able to attend. This
time however they rolled out the red carpet and
welcomed our cruisin’ club with open arms. The
person I contact for this cruise is Christine McBurney
from the City of Walnut. She directed our group and
made this cruise an excellent choice for the club to be
part of. We will definitely be part of this again in
2010.
Several of the club members have never been in
a parade so this was something new to them and
expressed anxious moments throughout the morning.
One thing for sure about a parade, we have to get their
early, find the staging area for our club, register the Rancho Cucamonga PT Cruiser Cruisin’ Club - 2009
club, then decorate and clean up the PT Cruisers
making them look parade ready. The citizens of this
fine city came out and joyfully waved and clapped at Join This Club

Sunday October 11 2009 - Calico Ghost Town

This cruise was the next day after the Walnut Festival Parade so we had to go
home after the parade and spruce up our PT Cruisers to cruise to Calico Ghost
Town which is somewhat past Barstow going north.
We arrived at the meeting place around 10 am and left shortly
thereafter. Jim Anderson was there but informed us he had to work that
morning so he was unable to go but gave us a send off on this cruise. He
brought along his dog Klondike, named after an ice cream and which is the
theme for Paula Anderson PT Cruiser. After all who were going on this cruise
arrived, we left heading north on the I-15 freeway. Approaching the on ramp at
Bear Valley Road we communicated via two-way radios with Ray & Claudia
Oviatt who were waiting to join us. Easily they came onto the freeway and
joined our group sliding in front of Tommy Dorsey who is always the tail end
cruiser on all our cruises.
I had never been to Calico Ghost Town even though we past it many
times traveling to and from throughout the years past. I was surprised at how
many things there are to see at Calico. The mining train around the mountain
was nice to go on because I was able to get off some good shots with my
camera while riding on the train.
One of the events Calico had on this day was where several men from
the audience try to move a large rock. Then it becomes the girls turn to try this
feat. One girl surprised many of us because she moved the large rock about 7
feet. Pretty strong - pretty & strong. The gift shops have a variety of things to
buy and the food smelled good. We stayed and wondered around through the
hills, mines, shops, and viewed several skits with Calico Ghost Town employees
dressed like the old west.
A famous 50’s restaurant called Peggy Sue’s is close by but we decided
to go someplace else for lunch. Ray & Claudia suggested a restaurant heading
towards 15 freeway south and which would get us closer to home for lunch.
This restaurant is new in California and I believe I heard someone say that more
of these restaurants are ging to be built in California. If they do I hope they
built one in Rancho Cucamonga.
The food is delicious and the variety and selection is beyond anyone’s
imagination. Needless to say I was one of the ones that ate too much and now
it was time to stretch those legs and walk a little. I remember getting a plate
with salad and then Texas style ribs, baby back ribs fruit and a lot more. The
selection is awesome. It kind of reminds me of the Home Town Buffet, but even
though it is similar there is no comparison.
The cruisin’ club talked via 2-way radios about next year cruises and
several good trips were mentioned which will definitely be on the cruise list
coming out at the end of this year. Well there is much to cover on these reviews
but the best of October is yet to come when our cruisin’ club goes on the much
awaited Clem’s 3-day 2-night Tropicana Resort Hotel & Casino Event Halloween
Car Show in Laughlin later on this month. This car show event week-end rates
can’t be beat with for only $99.00 we get a 2-night stay at the Flamingo and the
hotel will pay our registration & entry fee to the car show. Next review coming
up first week of November.
