Instructional Plan

Active Engagement Through
Cooperative
Learning

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 2

Needs Assessment
1. What is the learning problem or opportunity? Teachers not trained in
effective teaching strategies often apply the same ineffective
approach.
2. What is currently available? Traditional strategies are currently
available.
3. What should be available? Engagement strategies should be
available.
4. Explain the gap analysis between what is available and what should be
available. When using traditional teaching methods, there is
inequitable participation among students; therefore, there is an
increase in achievement gap.
5. What is your recommended solution for filling the gap? Teachers should
be trained in cooperative learning engagement methods.

Instructional Goal

After the workshop, teachers in the Litchfield Elementary School
District will apply teaching strategies that will increase active
engagement and equality of active engagement among students in
their classrooms.

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 4

Performance-Based Objectives

POB #1- The participants will understand the positive benefits of effective
teaching through cooperative learning by comparing traditional and
engagement strategies.

POB #2- Upon completion of this workshop, 100% of the participants will
create a lesson plan, with a cooperative learning activity, tailored to the
needs of their students.

Summative Assessment and Learning
Outcomes

Assessment for POB#1- After relevant discussions and activities,
participants will list as many types of traditional strategies and cooperative
learning engagement strategies that can be used in a classroom. They will also
be given a T-Chart to compare these strategies and describe the pros and
cons. A rubric will be used to evaluate participants understanding.
Assessment for POB#2- Participants will be grouped into 4-5 people. A
holistic rubric will be given to every person. This will be used as a guidline to
help provide feedback. Each member of the group will describe/share the
lesson, and the cooperative learning activity, he or she created with the rest of
the group. Members of the group will give feedback describing one positive
thing about the lesson, and one thing they can do to make it better.

Learner Characteristics

- A group of elementary school teachers who are either struggling with
student engagement in the classroom or teachers looking to balance the
equality of active engagement among their students in the classroom.

- Many of the teachers are not familiar with engagement strategies,
especially Kagans Cooperative Learning structures.

- Implications to the instructional plan is based on participants history of
students achievements, personal goals, and motivation.

Where and how will we learn?

The intended instructional setting will be in the cafeteria or
large space at a designated school where regular workshops
are offered.
Resources will include videos, handouts, and recommended
readings.
The learning context will guide the implementation of how the
lesson will be presented. Activities listed in the learning context
will also be modeled and applied during group activities to
emphasize the importance of cooperative learning.

Delivery Modality

The most effective way to deliver this lesson is through a
variety of modalities.
- Visuals ( handouts, video, PowerPoint, graphic
organizers)
- Facilitator led/guided discussions

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 9

Instructional Strategies

Content will be taught through visuals and through
modeling
List of Instructional strategies:
- Graphic organizer allows learners to display a great deal of info on a
single graphic organizer (encourages new ways of thinking, review, easy
revision)
- Questioning strategy (participants will be instructed to write down
questions during PowerPoint presentation) engages students in thinking and
stimulates independent thinking.
- Grouping promotes equal active engagement(participants can also
experience firsthand benefits of cooperative learning)

Formative Assessment

1) Graphic organizer- a T-chart is great for quick viewing to check
for understanding
2) Exit Pass- Can be used before a break to check if students are
grasping main ideas, use to adjust lesson or lesson pace
3) Partner Share individuals can share with a neighbor ideas,
thoughts, and questions
4) Walk-about facilitator walks about the classroom checking
student responses
5) Index Card Summaries/Questions- student can list big idea,
and/or write a question

Instructional Plan Template | Slide 13

Student Survey- Did teachers buy into the belief that
cooperative learning is an effective teaching strategy and
promotes student engagement.
Mass Email Follow-up With Attendants- Check up on
past participants. Ask if class engagement has improved. If
still struggling, recommend other resources.
Create an Online Forum- Teachers can share
experiences and ideas/ questions and help.
