The 2014 West Kootenay Quilt Conference was held in Salmo and several of our members attended. We
viewed many wonderful quilts & all did some shopping at the Vendors Mall. Plans are well under-way for
the 2015 Conference, the venue and merchants are all in place. The Day Group is handling refreshments.
Other than that we are all busy creating future heirlooms for our families or just plain quilts to keep some-
one warm. Some of us are trying to use up our stash & it is neat not having to buy fabric. But the thrill of
shopping for just the right colour or print will always be a challenge, no matter if you are stash busting or
starting a quilt with a brand new fabric. As long as it remains fun, then keep on doing it. Were looking for-
ward to summer when living is easy and quilting is a bit more relaxed.

ious stages. Our quilts measure 60 x72 to 78 long and if anyone is interested in joining us, we meet Tuesdays at 9
am at the Baptist Church. We will finish in June and start again in September. Contact Lorraine 250-352-2763

WRAP A SMILE FOR ROTAPLAST
Sheila Hart s shipment of 150 quilts was added to the 90 quilts collected by Cathy
Korolek of Heart n Sole Quilts in Grand Forks and shipped to Rotaplast International
headquarters in San Francisco. Thanks to the generosity of the quilters in the East and
West Kootenays, three Rotaplast missions will be outfitted with quilts. We dont know
which mission they will be used on, but forthcoming missions are going to Lima Peru,
Oaxaca Mexico, Monrovia Liberia, Pereria Venezuala, Cebu Philippines, Cumana Vene-
zuala, New Delhi India and Sythet Bangladesh Blogs about these missions can be followed
on the Rotaplast International website.

Diane Watts proudly displays her Rotaplast Quilt, while quilters from the Tuesday Morning Quilt Guild in Trail dis-
played the 14 quilts they made at the West Kootenay Quilt Conference.

Mariette dutifully complied with her older sister Susanne Lambrechts
request to attend a Kootenay Quilters Guild meeting. She did so
the day after retirement in 2000 from a 30 year career as a teach-
er in Saskatchewan and lastly at Trafalgar in Nelson. She hasnt
looked back since. Mariette was raised in a quilting family and she
did sew dresses for her sisters many years ago. Her passion for
quilting has developed in the past 20 years. Sister Sue has always
encouraged her and made sure that she attended every meeting.
Mariette takes whatever courses are offered through the Koote-
nay Quilters, the Kaslo Quilters or at the semi-annual retreats at
Watchan Lake. She thoroughly enjoys the camaraderie of the quilt-
ers who attend Watchan. She knows to sign up early as the next session is already full. After serving as
Guild Secretary, Mariette served 3.5 years as President; she appreciated Diane Watts completing her
term as she had to go to Kelowna for cancer treatments.
Mariette started her quilting journey by making wall hangings. She has been enchanted by mountain views
since her first visit to BC. On that journey, she felt that she had come home. She no longer had to
search calendars for spctacular views. Finally, she had the nerve to apply her skills to a big quilt. All of
her quilting is done on the machine. She is now ready to go back to making smaller quilt pieces such as
place mats. She will make her own design which is an outlet for her creativity. Family members are al-
ready clambering for these works of art.
Mariette is an active member of the very busy Kaslo Quilters. The Kaslo group focusses on charity or care
quilts. In recent years, they have made 17 quilts for the victims of the forest fire that desecrated Slave
Lake; they also made a dozen or more quilts for Calgary Flood Victims and will continue to do so until
all of the victims have returned to a home of their own.
Mariette is an enthusiastic gardener and in the past, she has shared her garden with fellow members of the
Kootenay Quilt Guild by hosting a mid-summer luncheon and garden tour. Mariette helps the Kaslo
community by booking the Seniors Hall. She also helps out with the mid-August MS Kootenay Challenge
Ride by operating a refreshment stand between Kaslo and New Denver.
Ultimately, Mariettes goal is to use up her stash.we look forward to seeing her latest creations.

WORKSHOPS ARE INSPIRATIONAL
Bonnie Bell proudly wears the Celtic themed sweatshirt that she made while participating in a workshop
given by Elsie Gates. Elsie says it was attended by 6 students and it was amazing to see the variety of fab-
rics chosen and to see the patterns revealed when the clipping and stitching were complete. Bonnie says,I
was pleasantly surprised with the outcome and hope to make another one
day.

Teacher as student, Rosemary Wallach
shares the trials and tribulations of making
this Split 9 Patch Quilt after she taught the
class.

Many of the Guild members heard about the
vast array of workshops offered by other Guilds. Teacher resources are availa-
ble in this area. We need to have more work shops, even basic work shops
like paper piecing was stated by several Guild members. Is there a member
willing to volunteer to coordinate this so that several sessions are ready to be offered come
fall? Please offer your services at the June wind-up.

GUILD HONOURED BY KLDH FOUNDATION
Bonnie Bell and long time Guild Member Loli Mikkleson attended the annual KLDH Foundation Caring
Companies dinner, where special recognition is given to major donors. The lovely event was Chaired by
long standing President Pat Dooley. The Kootenay Quilters were given a special plaque recognizing their
Gold Level donation status. There is a board in the foyer of the hospital that scrolls donors or has a look-
up function and the Quilt Guild display shows our most recent raffle quilt. Bryna Idler, Foundation Admin-
istrator, pictured on the left has been of assistance to the Guild when ticket sales were held and Lottery
Applications submitted.

PATTERN CHOSEN FOR 2015 GUILD RAFFLE QUILT

Through a process of consultation with all Guild members, the 2015 Guild Raffle Quilt
Committee consisting of Cheryl Cherry, Bonnie Bell, Sharon Drew, Darlene Hearn and
Mary Jane Dudley have chosen the pattern for the 2015 Guild Raffle Quilt. It is Garden
Labyrinth which looks intricate but is deemed as a confident beginner pattern. A block
technique is used to compile the quilt. The pattern was originally published in Quilters
World Magazine in April 2012. The Committee is seeking permission from the publisher
to use the pattern and will soon be making road trips to purchase fabric.
