TEXT 6
Almost a hundred thousand people were killed and half a million homes
destroyed as a result of an earthquake in Tokyo in 1923 . The earthquake began a
minute before noon when the inhabitants of Tokyo were cooking their midday
meals. Thousands of stoves were overturned as soon as the earth began to shake .
As a result , small fires broke out everywhere and quickly spread. The fire engines
were prevented from going to help because many of the roads had cracked open . It
was impossible to use fire fighting equipment as most of the water pipes had burst .
Consequently , over ninety percent of the damage was caused by fire rather than by
the collapse of the buildings . Most of those who died were not killed in the
earthquake itself but in the fires, which followed . If the earthquake had occurred at
night while people sleeping ,far fewer would have died.
A. Read the text and decide if these statements are TRUE(T) or FALSE (F) :

Rice is eaten by Vietnamese people every day. It often grows in tropical
countries such as Vietnam, Thailand or Malaysia. The Chinese have also been
growing rice for thousands of years. The seeds are planted in special beds to grow
into young rice plants. Then they are taken to fields covered with muddy water
called paddies. The fields of rice look very beautiful. After 3 or 5 months, the rice
is ready to be picked. People often drain away water before colleting rice. Eating
rice is a special action in the world. They dont use spoons or forks to enjoy bowls
of rice. However, they use two short sticks known as chopsticks to put rice into
their mouths. China and Vietnam are the two countries in which people use
chopsticks very well.

I often hear or read about natural disasters the eruption of mount St
Helen, a volcano in the state of Washington ; Hurricane Andrew in Florida ; the
floods in the American Midwest ; terrible earthquakes all over the world ; huge
fires ; and so on and so on .But Ill never forget my first personal experience with
the strangeness of nature the London Killer Fog of 1952. It began on Thursday,
December 4, when a high- pressure system (warm air) covered southem England.
With the freezing- cold air below, heavy fog formed. Pollution from factories ,
cars, and coal stoves mixed with the fog.The humidity was terribly high , there was
no breeze at all . Traffic (cars, trains, and boats) stopped . People couldnt see , and
some walked onto the railroad tracks or into the river . It was hard to breathe , and
many people got sick. Finally on Tuesday, December 9 , the wind came and the
fog went away. But after that , even more people got sick . Many of them died.
