Question:
Kajang has transformed itself from a small old town to a big modern town by designing and
developing new township such as Bandar Baru Bangi and Bandar Seri Putra as well as extending
its CBD (central business district) such as extension to Sungai Chua. However, its centre is
inadequately transformed and most of its residences are working in Kuala Lumpur and other
external areas. Write your vision and plan for Kajang to transform its town centre and to be a self
reliance town. You may use sketches to enhance your vision and plan.

Answer:

Introduction
Kajang and its surrounding areas is a sub district within Hulu Langat District in the state of
Selangor. It was situated approximately 14 miles southern of Kuala Lumpur. Kajang is also
linked with Putrajaya, the National Administrative Centre and Cyberjaya, the National
Multimedia City. On its west is situated Puchong town, Batu 3 and Klang. Basically Kajang
consists of a number of Malay, Chinese and Indian settlements. The population for Kajang is
about 342,657 and the region is about 9298 hectares.
If viewed from topographical perspective, Kajang sub district is located on highland areas
which are approximately 76,250 cm from the sea level. Most of the landscape is hilly filled with
mountains its flatlands can be found in the river basin such as Sungai Langat, Sungai Bangi,
Sungai Semenyih and Sungai Chua.
Every district or places have their own landmark. One of Kajang's landmarks is Stadium
Kajang which is situated in the heart of the town. It is near a popular hangout place among the
locals named Haji Samuri, which is also home to the famous dish satay Kajang. Another
landmark is the Kajang Mosque, which is easily recognisable by its bright yellow facade. The
mosque was painted and decorated by a local wealthy man.
There are a variety of facilities that comfort the community in Kajang. One of the
facilities is public transport such as station bus, cab and railway station. Other than that, health
facilities are provided in this city that is hospital and clinic.

Vision and plan
The vision of Kajang city is ti create a sustainable town where making the most of the blessings
of nature and promoting local production for local consumption. Moreover, the town need to
realize a safe, peaceful life for residents by linking and using electricity and information
networks. To be a self reliance town, Kajang must make an optimal used of the city
infrastructure, enabling effective use of public transportation and minimizing vehicular
movement. The short cycles strategies for Kajang is associated with the environmental thrust
Local Agenda 21 and emphasis on achieving local environmental sustainability through efficient
local use of natural resources and recycling, greater local economic autonomy and smaller
ecological footprint.

Urban Renewal
The general idea of our concept is to introduce a sustainable development for Kajang city
without compromising the community and future needs. Kajang city is already equipped with
basic amenities such as commercial center, housing, government offices, road network,
industries and public facilities. It is currently seen to possess high potential for further
development. However, from our opinion the development of Kajang city is not properly
planned which results in heavy traffic jam, flash floods, pollution, funding shortage and social
problems.

1. Downtown Development And Privatisation Of Public Space.
Public space can be categories to parks, public spaces, streets, parking, restrooms, parking area
and many more. Kajang city can make improvement to certain public space by using the tax
revenue from the district. Thus, a lot of facilities can be improved and also can enhance the
quality life of the community in Kajang city. For example, we also cam privatize the parking
area in order to upgrade the facilities. More addition, privatise the stadium to develop the
facilities in stadium more better and always maintain its appearance and the cleanness to give a
good impressions to the tourisms.

2. Landfill
Landfill area need to provide in order to dump the excess waste from household and commercial
area. We proposed landfill that came out with many function. Sanitary landfills are sites where
waste is isolated from the environment until it is safe. It is considered when it has completely
degraded biologically, chemically and physically. In high-income countries, the level of isolation
achieved may be high.
There are financial and other benefits to sites with long operating lifetimes. Landfill sites
to sanitary status will also help in capturing the bio-gas as a source of renewable energy. As we
know that, landfill will generate main gases that are methane, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and
carbon dioxide. Capturing and positive utilization of the biogas is not only environmentally
beneficial but also economically attractive. The methane gases produce naturally from landfill
site. The main gases from methane can convert to energy then convert to electricity. So, we can
produce our own electricity from the landfill without have any cost. Landfill is one of the most
environmental friendly and cheapest means of waste disposal.

2. Naked Street And Masjid Centred
One of the reasons for people to travel is due to the distance between the places that was located.
The consequence of travelling is the fuel combustion that leads to pollution, consumption of
money and time. Thus, the planning and orientation of the city should be design properly. The
centralized concept such as masjid centered can adapt for Kajang city. Centralize buildings may
encourage people to walk to their desire place instead of using vehicles. Thus good walking
condition passengers must be provide. Concept of naked street should be implementing. Concept
of naked street is by removing all the things that were supposed to make it safe for the
pedestrian.

3. Modern Public Transport Facilities
In Kajang, the main public transportation is by using trains, buses and taxi. Within Kajang city,
there are Rapid KL, mini bus and taxi. The main existing road connecting Kajang with
expressway such as Cheras-Kajang Expressway, North South Expressway and many more. Due
to higher population of community and abundant vehicle movement in Kajang city, lot of
emission green gas occurs.
A good traffic management is aimed to optimizing the existing infrastructure and improving
the flow capacity at the city. Additional measures such as traffic signage, pavement line marking
and barrier should be used for the road safety. Here are some strategies that can be applied in
Kajang City centre:
1) Redirecting the movement pattern of using the private transport to the public transport
and also improving the service for public transport such as subway, busses and taxi.
2) Upgrading the road systems by widening and implementing the smart grid system for the
transportation systems.
3) Suggest having a metro system in Kajang: in Kajang, I preferred to have subway or
underground metro systems. It is because, we can minimizing the usage of the land use.
A part from that, by using subway we can reduce the emission of carbon monoxide and
also reducing the noise pollution in the city. This metro system is an electric passanger
transport system with high capacity and high frequency of services that totally
independent from other traffic, road or pedestrian. The location of the subway connecting
the residential area to the commercial area at the centre of the city and also to the Sungai
Langat region. This Subway also linkage to Balakong which is industrial area.

4. Recycling
I also proposed to place an environmentally friendly Recycling Center focusing on reusing
todays household or domestic waste materials to preserve tomorrows resources and to promote
recycle in our city. They are green, reduce energy wastage and the most important thing is they
are fully functional as well as any other building.
The aim of this recycling center is to minimize natural resource use while enhancing
social and economic benefits. It is designed to increase the understanding and appreciation of the
environment among the public. The design approach of this project is to produce an
environmental aware community by exposing them to the process and the importance of
recycling. Interactive space among public and learning space to educate the public are the main
concern of the project. Therefore, the space program will be designed for interaction and
education purposed.
Thus, a recycling center should be more than a recycling center in or to promote and
educate the community about recycling. In this project, the recycling center should hold a
commercial area selling recycled product, a place for monthly junk yard sale for the community
to trade or exchange their unwanted useable house hold or furniture, a gallery and even a cafe.

5. River Front
At Kajang city, the only river basin that connecting Kajang is Langat River basin. Rapid
development in Kajan affecting water quality of Kajang and also disturbs the ecosystems in
Langat Basin. Several large federal government projects are located along Langat River and it
will affect the price of land and also contribute to human settlements, landscape and ecology of
river basin. We can applying project River of Life to make Langat river basin vibrant and
livable. The transformation is based on river cleaning, beautification and river development. The
water quality should be clean and improve by cleaning the river. The maintenance of Langat
river should be done to ensure the river is safe to use and also beautiful.

6. Environmental Quality
After the development of Kajang under redesign development, most of the existing natural forest
will be reserved. From the well-planned building orientation and reserved places for plantation, it
is believe that air quality and atmosphere condition in Kajang are satisfactory. Besides that,
together with the utilization of renewable energy and high technology for transport system,
which able to have zero emission of greenhouse gases, this will effectively, ensure environment
quality in Kajang is in good condition. However, environmental quality is not only about air
quality, on the same water and land quality also needed to be taken into consideration. Thus,
high technology and engineered method should apply on solid waste management and water
resources as well, to ensure good quality and minimum impact to water and land.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, we can transform Kajang itself from a small old town to a big modern town by
designing and developing new township such as Bandar Baru Bangi and Bandar Seri Putera. So,
a proper plan, vision and proper designing can be implemented in Kajang city. Some of the best
practices in Europe can be implementing in Kajang city to make the city more self reliance
