Level II -- First Sound

This activity helps students learn the sounds of letters (phonics) by focusing on
the first sound in each word.

Tutor Tip: This unit has two words that start with letters which are minimal pairs: f and v. Minimal pairs
are sounds that are the same except for one feature (in this case its voicingf is voiceless and v is
voiced). Minimal pairs are more difficult to distinguish between, especially if the students first language
does not make the distinction-- as is the case in Somali with p and b.

I do:
Present vocab words using pictures.
Call attention to first sound in word. Use a sticky note to stick the first
sounds letter to each picture.
NOTE: For this unit, the first sounds are as follows:
vegetables: v
meat: m
rice: r
water: w
food: f
bag: b
bottle: b
carton: c
Present the whole word strips. Match each to its picture.
We do:
Take away sticky notes and whole word strips.
Help the student match the sticky notes with first sounds to their pictures.
Help the student match the whole word strips to their pictures.
You do:
Take away the sticky notes and word strips once more.
Have the student match them again on their own.
(Include sticky notes in the materials)
