Special to The Sun
For Seneca High School
students, Friday, May 30
was a throwback to the
days of recess and field day
as they celebrated Spirit
Week with a carnival. Stu-
dents had their pick of
things to do from a chicken
wing eating contest, tug-
of-war or even riding a me-
chanical shark. The beauti-
ful weather and warm tem-
peratures provided a per-
fect atmosphere for the
celebration as the number
of school days left before
summer vacation are
quickly dwindling.

Helping

Two years ago, Greg Nixon
wanted to help with relief efforts
after Hurricane Sandy.
What started as an individual
simply looking to give back even-
tually grew into a full-fledged
charity organization that has re-
ceived donations from corpora-
tions as large as Coca-Cola and
The Home Depot, has been asked
to work with the American Red
Cross, has almost 15,000 followers
on Twitter and has been featured
on national programs such as
The Queen Latifah Show.
Nixon, a Tabernacle Township
resident, is the founder and CEO
of charity group Helping Hands
of New Jersey, but things began
with just him and his wife, Karen.
The couple enjoys riding motor-
cycles, and when Hurricane
Sandy hit, several of their friends
from different areas were affect-
ed.
When he learned of a food
bank that had been wiped out,
Nixon filled a 20-foot-long trailer

The Sun
If you hear an inordinate amount of mo-
torcycle traffic on Sunday, June 22, just
know its for a good cause.
Thats the day the South Jer-Z Riderz
will hold its ninth annual poker run, which
invites motorcycle enthusiasts from all
around South Jersey to rev their engines
and raise money for charity in the process.
As a club, the Riderz organize numerous
rides and events throughout the year cov-
ering destinations from a few hours away
to those involving overnight or weekend
stays. The rides are generally proposed by
any of the clubs members and participa-
tion is always voluntary. Members can pick
and choose rides based on individual
schedules and interests. The clubs
sergeant at arms Tim Everett said the
club welcomes members from Shamong,
neighboring Tabernacle and communities
across South Jersey. The clubs poker run
is typically its largest event of the year.
A poker run is an organized event where
participants must visit five to seven check-
points, drawing a playing card at each one.
The object is to have the best poker hand at
the end of the run. The event has a time
limit, however the participants are not
timed, winning is purely a matter of
chance. This years run will feature $100,
$50 and $50 prizes for the best, second best
and worst hand, respectively. The prizes
are not the goal of the annual event though
that would be to raise money for the Small
Steps in Speech organization.
The motivation behind Small Steps in
Speech is to remember Sgt. Marc J. Small.
Small was a special forces operational de-
tachment-alpha team medical sergeant as-
signed to Company A, 1st Battalion, 3rd
Special Forces Group Airborne in the Unit-
ed States Army. On Feb. 12, 2009, Small was
killed while serving in Afghanistan.
Small planned on marrying Amanda
Charney, founder of Small Steps in Speech,
when he returned from Afghanistan. Char-

T
he principle of the American
Dream is simple: Work hard
and you can achieve anything.
It doesnt matter who you are, where
you come from or where you want to
go, you can get there in America.
The principle itself is simple, al-
though its not easy to attain. It takes
hard work, dedication and some good
old-fashioned luck.
The American Dream is why the
United States is considered the melt-
ing pot of the world.
Pilgrims first came to the New
World for something more. They got
that. Then their descendants fought
for the right to be independent and
continue that dream.
Generations that followed forged
successful, fulfilling lives here, some
starting with dirt and ending with
gold. That made our country even
more popular for more immigrants
from different parts of the globe.
This opportunity, the availability for
upward mobility, to make something
of yourself, is the crux of what we are.
But is that American Dream becom-
ing less of a reality and more of a pure
dream? Many people feel that it is.
CNNMoneys American Dream Poll
found that almost 60 percent of re-
spondents feel that the American
Dream no matter how they define it
is out of reach.
Thats not good. Whats even worse
is that adults between 18 and 34 said
that the dream is not only unattain-
able, but 63 percent said its impossi-
ble. Even worse, all Americans agree
with them. Their parents generation
who by the way, think they are better
off than their parents were say that
their kids, these 18-34 year olds, wont
be better off than them.
Yikes!
Maybe the survey results shouldnt
be all that surprising, considering the
recession that turned the world upside
down and has continued to have ill ef-
fects on the job market. But what the
results should be is a wake-up call.
The American Dream was the foun-
dation of our country, and it needs to
be for years to come. If any one gener-
ation finds that dream unattainable,
well lose our identity and most im-
portantly, well lose these people.
So what does this generation need?
It needs opportunity. It needs jobs. It
needs the availability of mobility.
Who can provide it? That is the
question that needs to be answered.
The American Dream...
...its out of reach for most Americans, so says a new poll

ney is a school based speech and

and developmental disorders
within the realm of speech and
language.
Small had dreams of Charney
opening her own private practice
and came up with the name,
Small Steps in Speech, to sym-
bolize her soon to be last name
along with the small steps chil-
dren must take to build their com-
munication skills. When the
heart-breaking news came of
Smalls passing, starting this non-
profit foundation seemed like a
good way to keep his memory
alive and keep him close to her
heart. For Everett and the rest of
the South Jer-Z Riderz, partner-
ing with Small Steps in Speech
was a slam dunk.
Whenever you can help people
or organizations out you feel
good, and when you see the work
Small Steps and Amanda are
doing, you just say wow, Everett
said. So many people come to the
organization for help. Theyre all
volunteers that work there too so
theyre working hard and giving
up their time to help these kids.
Helping a charitable organiza-
tion has been a focus of the Rid-
erz since the group formed 11
years ago. According to Everett,
that attitude is prevalent through-
out the group.
Were a mom and pop riding
club. Husbands and wives mostly,
no boneheads, Everett said.
People really look forward to
this event every year. Its a good
time for a good cause.
