Sluice Gate IS:13349
Sluice Gate as per IS Code
IS:13349 has flat surface on
the back side of frame, and do
not have any extended part to
be embedded in the wall.
Hence civil work & time of
erection is reduced
considerably.

of Gate Frame directly fitted on
the wall by Anchor fasteners.

Application
IS: 13349 Standard, Page 1, Point 1.1.1
These Sluice Gates are designed for either seating
head or unseating head or both
IS: 3042 Standard, Page 4, Point 1.5
This standard does not cover the types of
sluice gates where the operating forces tend
to push the door away from the frame.
Seating Water Head
When the water pressure
tends to press the door /
shutter on to the gate frame
then the type of water head
is called seating /
on-seating water head.
Unseating Water Head
When the water pressure tends
to push the door/shutter away
i.e. unseat from the gate frame
then the type of water head is
called unseating /off-seating
water head.

Testing
Point 11: Shop Testing
11.1 All Sluice gates shall be subjected to the
tests specified in 11.2, 11.3, 11.4, and 11.5
for their conformity to the specified
requirements.
11.2 Seat Clearance Check: By 0.10 mm
thick feeler gauge.
11.3 Smooth Movement Test
11.4 Shop Leakage Test by applying
Unseating Hydraulic Pressure
11.5 Hydrostatic Test to confirm body
soundness by applying water pressure of
1.5 times the unbalanced specified maximum
operating head on closed gate for a period of
5 minutes.
IS: 3042 Standard, Page 10
Point 8: Testing
8.1 After completion each sluice gate shall be
tested in the shop for smooth working of the
component parts including the operating
gear.
Comments: IS:3042 insist on only smooth
working of sluice gate and silent about
leakage testing & body soundness.
In general IS:3042 gates are tested at
atmospheric pressure for leakages only by
borrowing leakage test parameter from
IS:13349 standard.
Due to spigot construction on the back side,
IS:3042 gates can not fit on the test
bench and hence can not be tested for
leakage at operating head as well as for body
soundness.
When comparing IS:13349 Sluice Gates with IS:3042 Sluice Gates, we can see
that technically IS:13349 Gates are superior and they are designed for Seating
as well as unseating water head.
We can test the IS:13349 Sluice gates to confirm their suitability for design
parameter, which can not be tested in case of IS:3042 gates.
Once the gate will be installed on site, nothing can be done, even in case of
heavy leakage. The IS:3042 Gates can not be removed without damaging civil
work considerably.
The IS:13349 gates not only can be tested before installation itself to verify the
suitability in advance. These gates can be fitted as well as can be removed easily
by minimum damage i.e. by removing secondary grouting only.
As for as price are concerned, if we compare IS:3042 gate, which is wall
mounted with the Wall mounted IS:13349 gate i.e. without wall thimble, it is a
proven fact that the IS:13349 gates are more cost effective, even in case of
initial cost.
