Technologies Used In Communication
Communication is anything that is seen, heard or read and something which conveys an impression about
people. It is only through communication that we learn to like, influence and trust each other, begin new
relationships and in this process also learn more about ourselves. Our basic social nature demands that we
communicate with other people to build a rapport, and through this very act we begin the process of
establishing relationships with others.
In a simple model, often referred to as the transmission model or standard view of communication,
information or content (e.g. a message in natural language) is sent in some form (as spoken language) from
an emisor/ sender/ encoder to a destination/ receiver/ decoder. This common conception of communication
simply views communication as a means of sending and receiving information. The strengths of this model
are simplicity, generality, and quantifiability. Social scientists Claude Shannon and Warren Weaver
structured this model based on the following elements:
1. An information source, which produces a message.
2. A transmitter, which encodes the message into signals
3. A channel, to which signals are adapted for transmission
4. A receiver, which 'decodes' (reconstructs) the message from the signal.
5. A destination, where the message arrives.


Technologies in society
Technology has taken over every aspect of our daily lives from commerce to leisure and even culture.
Today, mobile phones, desktop computers, hand held devices, emails and the use of internet has become a
central part of our culture and society. Technology has made us a global society, where people can interact
and communicate swiftly and efficiently.
Technologies Used In Communication


Technology has contributed towards the elimination of language barriers. Examples of (technology) tools are
emails, instant messaging (IM), chat rooms and social networking websites, such as Facebook and Twitter,
Skype, iphones, Cellular Phones and similar applications. A disadvantage is that older generations find it
difficult to keep up with the ever changing technologies available today. The resistance to change and
inability to keep up with rapid technology evolution are areas to note. Many people in society are not in a
position to take advantage of available technology. This may be due to poverty, geographical location or lack
of access to technology
Current technologies used in business communication .
Modern business requires modern technology. Any business that expects to thrive today must have at least a
basic understanding of the various innovations, programs and devices as well as the knowledge of how to
apply these technologies. The many tools and powers that technology makes available to the business owner
and employees can help the business succeed in its goals after understanding how to use them properly.

The Internet can now be accessed almost anywhere by numerous means, especially through mobile
Internet devices. Mobile phones, datacards, handheld game consoles and cellular routers allow users to
connect to the Internet from anywhere there is a wireless network supporting that device's technology.
Some Commonly used technologies are:-

Electronic mail
Electronic mail, or email, is an important communications service available on the Internet. The concept of
sending electronic text messages between parties in a way analogous to mailing letters or memos predates
the creation of the Internet. Pictures, documents and other files are sent as email attachments. Emails can be
send to multiple email addresses.

Internet telephony
Internet telephony is another common communications service made possible by the creation of the Internet.
VoIP stands for Voice-over-Internet Protocol, referring to the protocol that underlies all Internet
communication.. The benefit is that, as the Internet carries the voice traffic, VoIP can be free or cost much
less than a traditional telephone call. VoIP is maturing into a competitive alternative to traditional telephone
service. Interoperability between different providers has improved and the ability to call or receive a call
from a traditional telephone is available.
Voice quality can still vary from call to call but is often equal to and can even exceed that of traditional calls.
Remaining problems for VoIP include emergency telephone number dialing and reliability. Currently, a few
VoIP providers provide an emergency service, but it is not universally available. Traditional phones are line-
powered and operate during a power failure; VoIP does not do so without a backup power source for the
phone equipment and the Internet access devices.
Microsoft pointed out that a Forrester study done in 2006 showed that 17 percent of businesses made
converting to VoIP a priority, with another 18 percent already using VoIP to some degree. VoIP allows
businesses to be in near-constant communication with employees and others at a fraction of a cost.
Social Networking

The Internet has enabled entirely new forms of social interaction, activities, and organizing, thanks to its
basic features such as widespread usability and access. Social networking websites such as Face book,
Twitter and MySpace have created new ways to socialize and interact.

Users of these sites are able to add a wide variety of information to pages, to pursue common interests, and
to connect with others. It is also possible to find existing acquaintances, to allow communication among
existing groups of people. Sites like LinkedIn foster commercial and business connections. YouTube and
Flickr specialize in users' videos and photographs.
With the rise of social networks such as Facebook, MySpace, Digg and others, a form of crowd-based media
known as social media has emerged. Businesses can take advantage of social media as another aspect of
business communication, by performing such tasks as creating profiles on social networks, submitting online
media to sites such as Digg, and using websites like Twitter to answer consumer questions. Many businesses
have already jumped on the social media bandwagon, with some (Microsoft and Wal-Mart in particular)
having experimented with their own social networks.
Instant messaging
Instant messaging is like having a real-time conversation with another person or a group of people. When
you type and send an instant message, the message is immediately visible to all participants. Unlike e-mail,
all participants have to be online (connected to the Internet) and in front of their computers at the same time.
Communicating by means of instant messaging is called chatting.
Automated Communication
Communication technologies also make it possible for businesses to communicate with customers and
employees automatically. Phone technologies have moved into the digital age, making it possible for
companies to automatically broadcast messages to employees and customers. They must, however, be
careful about not broadcasting unwanted and unsolicited phone advertisements in violation of federal "do not
call" laws. Nonetheless, computer information and telephone technologies have made it possible for
companies to do automatically what once required hours of manual labour.
The low cost and nearly instantaneous sharing of ideas, knowledge, and skills has made collaborative work
dramatically easier, with the help of collaborative software. Not only can a group cheaply communicate and
share ideas, but the wide reach of the Internet allows such groups to easily form in the first place. An
example of this is the free software movement, which has produced, among other programs, Linux, Mozilla
Firefox, and OpenOffice.org. Internet "chat", whether in the form of IRC chat rooms or channels, or via
instant messaging systems, allow colleagues to stay in touch in a very convenient way when working at their
computers during the day. Messages can be exchanged even more quickly and conveniently than via email.
Extensions to these systems may allow files to be exchanged, "whiteboard" drawings to be shared or voice
and video contact between team members.
Communication devices
Laptop computers and small notebook PCs
Laptop computers are lightweight mobile PCs with a thin screen. Laptops can operate on batteries, so you
can take them anywhere. Unlike desktops, laptops combine the CPU, screen, and keyboard in a single case.
The screen folds down onto the keyboard when not in use.

Small notebook PCs (often referred to as mini-notebooks), are small, affordable laptops that are designed to
perform a limited number of tasks. They're usually less powerful than a laptop, so they're used mainly to
browse the web and check e-mail.
Handheld computers
Handheld computers, also called personal digital assistants (PDAs), are battery-powered computers small
enough to carry almost anywhere. Although not as powerful as desktops or laptops, handheld computers are
useful for scheduling appointments, storing addresses and phone numbers, and playing games. Some have
more advanced capabilities, such as making telephone calls or accessing the Internet. Instead of keyboards,
handheld computers have touch screens that you use with your finger or a stylus (a pen-shaped pointing
tool).
Tablet PCs
Tablet PCs are mobile PCs that combine features of laptops and handheld computers. Like laptops, they're
powerful and have a built-in screen. Like handheld computers, they allow you to write notes or draw pictures
on the screen, usually with a tablet pen instead of a stylus. They can also convert your handwriting into
typed text. Some Tablet PCs are convertibles with a screen that swivels and unfolds to reveal a keyboard
underneath
Conclusion and Warning:
Communication is a gift, it can be used to create good and also to create evil. The main intension of the
communication is to express the idea to others. When a technology is involved in a communication, utter
care should be taken. A technology has its own good and evil in it. A good technological ethics are to be
followed for good and fruitful yield in communications through them.
Be careful how you utilize IT for communicating with others. Don't cross work/home boundaries by abusing
technology, like calling an employee who's on vacation.
