3. SmartPlant Enterprise-style user interface
Acknowledged as the tool to be used for piping tasks in the plant environment, I-Sketch is already
offered as part of Intergraphs SmartPlant Enterprise engineering software solution. Building on I-
Sketchs position, but now offering a familiar SmartPlant-style user interface, and importantly,
integration with other SmartPlant products SmartPlant Foundation in particular SmartPlant
Isometrics provides a familiar user interface experience that existing users of Intergraph solutions
will find makes the software very easy to learn and adopt as the replacement for I-Sketch. The new
interface has been significantly redesigned to incorporate modeling, information, and visualization
views, providing an engineering data-rich environment with added design realism, consistent with
Intergraphs SmartPlant look and feel and general user interface (UI) standards, making it a
perfect fit within the SmartPlant product family.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 4

3.1 Pipeline Properties view aids input of engineering
information
The new Pipeline Properties view provides direct access to the data model, making it easy to detail
the pipeline with all necessary engineering information, or edit the attributes of the pipeline or
individual components and welds.

3.2 Pipeline Explorer view aids navigation
The new Pipeline Explorer view provides constant feedback on the developing model and displays
the bill of material associated with each pipeline. A powerful feature of this window is the ability
to select components within the tree view it displays, particularly useful when components are
being moved between individual pipelines or cut, copied, and pasted to other sheets. The view
also aids navigation of the model, because selections made in this view are also highlighted in
the detail sketch and 3D views, and vice versa.
Pipeline level commands Apply Default Choice, Add Flanges and Gaskets Automatically, etc.
can also be applied in this window, but only to the selected pipeline rather than all pipelines in
the model.
Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 5

3.3 Viewing tools improve zoom, pan, and general
sketch manipulation
Zooming, panning, and fitting the sketch to the view are all possible using the new icons on the
View toolbar.

Now that the complete view can be centered in the Detail Sketch view by holding down the middle
mouse button and moving the sketch, the scroll bars that existed in I-Sketch to do this are no longer
required, so they have been removed.
Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 6

3.4 3D view adds design realism
Visualization of pipes modeled in I-Sketch 2007 was previously only possible once the sketch
was fully defined and drawings were generated. Users could then open the PCF in I-View
to see it in 3D. The introduction of the new 3D view means users are no longer limited to only
working with the sketch view. The 3D view provides an instant 3D display of piping data inside
the modeling environment, allowing pipelines to be viewed as true-scale 3D models at any time
during the design or editing process, adding a level of realism and providing instant feedback on
progress and completeness. The 3D view window can be invoked at any time using its toolbar
button, which also closes the window.

Using standard Windows functionality, all open windows can be tiled; cascaded, or switched
between, meaning you can work simultaneously with both the detail and 3D view.
Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 7

Equally important is the ability to visualize multiple pipelines simultaneously, meaning
that the new design can be compared against existing as-built pipeline data to visually
expose clash situations that may exist between pipelines in confined areas. In the case of
new design for example, tie-ins made to existing pipelines, provided the as-built information
being used is complete and accurate an engineer can now be confident that new pipelines
will fit, having performed this essential check step before final isometrics are produced and
approved for construction.
3.5 Redefinable toolbars
Toolbars are now user-definable, meaning users can configure these essential interface components
to their preferences, improving ease of use and productivity.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 8

3.6 Error pop-up window
A new error pop-up window provides instantaneous feedback on problems, and is usually
displayed when software features are either not being employed correctly, or when information
is missing or has been inaccurately defined. The window can be dismissed at any time, but will
continue to pop up until the necessary action has been taken to remedy the problem.

3.7 Built on Piping Object Data (POD) data model
Unlike I-Sketch, which used the binary .ISO file format to hold the on-screen pipeline sketch,
SmartPlant Isometrics is built on Alias Piping Object Data (POD) data model, the same platform
used by its companion product SmartPlant Spoolgen. This enables the seamless exchange of piping
data between the two applications, and from SmartPlant Isometrics I-Tools, which generates the
POD file as one of its outputs.

3.7.1 Improved piping data import success and reliability
The import of pipelines into SmartPlant Isometrics produces PODs rather than ISO files.
The import process is more reliable than it was in I-Sketch. This is crucial for as-built projects
where existing as-designed piping data has to be imported before it can be edited to reflect
as-built site conditions.
Imported pipelines are displayed in isometric drawing form on-screen.

Turning off the display of dimensions and the border displays the pipeline as a solved sketch.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 10

3.7.2 Support for modeling of multi-pipelines in a single session
Only a single pipeline model could be defined in I-Sketch. In SmartPlant Isometrics, the POD
architecture provides a sophisticated hierarchical multi-pipeline data model, opening up the
possibility of working concurrently with several pipelines in the same session.

SmartPlant Isometrics supports the modeling of individual pipelines, the simultaneous modeling
of several unconnected pipelines, or the modeling of complete connected piping systems.
You can use SmartPlant Isometrics to create one or more pipelines in a single POD file. Each
pipeline consists of a set of connected components, but the pipelines themselves do not need to
connect together. Each pipeline is processed separately by ISOGEN and one or more isometric
drawings created for each. The following graphic illustrates an example of the basic organizational
structure of a standard pipeline model in SmartPlant Isometrics:
Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 11

A single pipeline is split into one or more sheets. Each sheet represents a view in the software.
When modeling a standard pipeline, the software forces you to observe the following rules:
1. A sheet can only contain objects from a single pipeline
2. Pipelines cannot be connected
Alternatively, it is possible to create a single piping system, consisting of multiple connected
pipelines. The whole system is processed by ISOGEN, and a single piping isometric is produced,
containing all the pipelines. The following graphic illustrates an example of the basic
organizational structure of a piping system in SmartPlant Isometrics:

Unlike those rules that are inherent when modeling a standard pipeline, the software observes the
following rules when modeling a piping system:
1. Objects on a sheet are not restricted to a single pipeline
2. Components can be connected across multiple pipelines
3. The software always produces system isometrics
Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 12

4. New applications introduced
4.1 SmartPlant Isometrics I-Tools provides input to
design and stress analysis systems
Included with SmartPlant Isometrics is a completely new version of I-Tools, renamed SmartPlant
Isometrics I-Tools and licensed by an ISM license tag.
Although SmartPlant Isometrics itself can be used to model complete piping systems and produce
system isometrics, SmartPlant Isometrics I-Tools offers additional functionality in that it produces
piping systems by merging together IDF/PCF files from any other ISOGEN-enabled product. This
is particularly useful to plant engineers who require system isometric drawings for the purposes of
inspection, hydraulic/pressure testing, and commissioning of piping systems.
Based on criteria specified by the user, SmartPlant Isometrics I-Tools will process large numbers of
individual IDF or PCF files, automatically identifying pipelines that share common characteristics,
including pipelines that:
Are located in the same area of the plant
Have the same operating temperature
Share coincident end connections, meaning they are connected
The software groups then displays the pipelines in 3D, either in rendered or symbolic
representation.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 13

SmartPlant Isometrics I-Tools is essentially a platform on which a variety of smart piping data
manipulation tools can be delivered. Currently it provides the following tools:
System Builder merges together a number of piping files identified by the software as
being connected to produce system POD files, which can subsequently be imported into
SmartPlant Isometrics for further editing or to produce system isometrics drawings.
Data Stripper, used either standalone or during system building, removes unwanted
attributes or objects, meaning that the resultant POD file produced only contains the
information required to be documented and annotated on the isometric. Data stripping
has to be performed with care since disconnected pipelines may be produced. A
disconnection checker tool is provided to detect disconnections before POD files
are transferred to other applications.
The software provides POD feed into both SmartPlant Isometrics and SmartPlant Spoolgen, but
cannot be used to add, remove, or move piping data between pipelines to redefine them although
this is achievable in SmartPlant Isometrics.

SmartPlant Isometrics I-Tools does not possess the ability to generate piping isometrics standalone
(no direct link to Personal ISOGEN), but instead works in conjunction with SmartPlant Isometrics
to do this, using its integral link to Personal ISOGEN.
Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 14

Of particular interest to engineers is SmartPlant Isometrics I-Tools ability to output piping
information in PCF format. Many popular pipe stressing solutions offer a PCF interface. This
means that complete piping systems output by SmartPlant Isometrics I-Tools can now be
interfaced to these systems for pipe stress analysis to be conducted.
4.2 Symbol editor creates user-defined symbol shapes
Included with SmartPlant Isometrics is a completely new version of Symbol editor, renamed
SmartPlant Symbol Editor.
SmartPlant Symbol Editor supports the creation of user-defined ISOGEN symbol shapes (SKEYS)
and other material data displayed to users in SmartPlant Material Editor. Its main purpose is to
enable users to either create new or alter existing re-definable ISOGEN symbol key shapes
(SKEYS) to meet their drawing annotation needs.
Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 15

As well as being output on ISOGEN isometric drawings, user symbols can also now be displayed
in the sketching environment, improving sketch presentation and design interpretation. For
example, branch connections now have their own distinguishable features and are immediately
recognizable as fitting tees or olets, etc.

4.3 SmartPlant Material Editor creates reference data in
Access MDB format
Supplied as part of SmartPlant Isometrics, a new tool called SmartPlant Material Editor is used
to create reference data in database format. SmartPlant Material Editor replaces the Component
Information Manager and Specification Generator applications supplied with I-Sketch 2007, which
held their reference data in text file format.
Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 16

SmartPlant Isometrics is a specification-driven application. Before a piping project can begin,
reference data (piping specifications and materials catalogs) must be defined.
Depending on how a company manages its reference data, SmartPlant Material Editor is used to
build either a single comprehensive materials catalog, often referred to as a master catalog, or
several catalogs. A materials catalog usually consists of a database of various component types,
including pipes, flanges, bolts, gaskets, fittings such as elbows, tees, and reducers The database
contains detailed size information about each component, such as bores and dimensions. It also
contains information regarding the material item or stock code, component weight, schedule,
rating, and end type, as well as any number of user-defined material and component attributes.
While the amount of components included in a typical piping specification can number in the
hundreds, or even thousands, a materials catalog is much larger, with several thousand individual
components. You can think of a specification as a subset of all of the components in a materials
catalog. A catalog includes all of the components you can use at any given time, but the specifi-
cation includes only those components you can use in a particular piping design project.

Piping Specification Materials Catalog
Hundreds or thousands of components Several thousand components
Only those components you can use
in a particular project
All of the components you can use
at any given time
Piping specifications and materials catalogs are now held in database format specifically
Microsoft Access 2003 MDB format.
Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 17

4.3.1 Material builder creates materials catalogs
Reference data is usually held on paper or electronically in text, spreadsheet, or database
formats. Paper-based information can be rapidly entered to create materials catalogs using
the Material Builder.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 18

To aid the user during the material building task, several views on the material data are provided,
including the:
Engineering view

Stick (material data model expressed as runs and legs) view

Symbol view

Together, these views help users to enter the correct dimensional and descriptive information
for the materials they are building.
Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 19

4.3.2 Specification builder produces piping specifications
SmartPlant Material Editor possesses many advanced database filtering tools enabling the user to
extract only the materials data required. Filtering is the main technique employed to produce piping
specifications for use on piping projects. To assist in this task, the Specification Builder tool has
been developed to automate the filtering of components from one or more materials catalogs based
on user-defined queries.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 20

Additionally, general search tools enable multiple records to be copied and pasted into other
databases. Modifiers (a sophisticated search and replace type feature) enable records to be
searched for and edited globally. For example, a portion of an item code or description can
be changed.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 21

4.3.3 Reference Tables define design rules
As well as providing easy-to-use, intuitive, and highly productive tools for the creation or editing
of materials data, SmartPlant Material Editor also supports the definition of Reference Tables.
Reference Tables are used to apply a set of design rules and standards to be used on the piping
design project. Reference Tables replace the I-Sketch 2007 .cho, .blt, .con, and .iml files, and
once set up, drive the definition of the SmartPlant Isometrics piping model by automatically
determining material choices for placed components, bolt sets that accompany flanged items,
and branch configurations for a particular main and branch size combination.

4.3.4 Text Maps allow item code and description sets
to be transposed
Item codes are typically company-specific, but a materials catalog supports multiple item codes
applied to the same physical component. For example, an engineering contractor might need to
work with several different operating companies, each requiring them to use a different set of
item codes. To switch between the available sets, SmartPlant Material Editor uses Text Maps.
In any database, there are two types of text maps one for material item codes and one for
material descriptions. The item code text map contains all of the item codes for all of the materials
in the database. The description text map contains all of the descriptions for all of the materials in
the database.
Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 22

Optionally, users can choose on the fly which set of item codes and corresponding set of
descriptions to use when they generate isometric output in SmartPlant Isometrics.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 23

4.3.5 Upgrade text-based reference data automatically to new
MDB format
To support the upgrade from I-Sketch 2007 and migration of users to SmartPlant Isometrics,
user-created I-Sketch reference data .spn, .cif, .cat, etc. can be easily converted to produce
an equivalent MDB. During the conversion, default choices, end-connection, and bolting details
are also converted and maintained.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 24

4.4 Existing tools continue to be bundled
I-Configure, also supplied as part of I-Sketch 2007, has been renamed SmartPlant I-Configure.
The software provides a single environment for the creation of projects and configuration of
isometric drawing and report outputs.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 25

I-View, also supplied as part of I-Sketch 2007, has been renamed SmartPlant Isometrics I-View,
and is licensed by an ISM license tag. The software is used to visualize pipes (IDF or PCF files) in
3D that were originally created by any ISOGEN-enabled system. The software can also be used to
diagnose problems in piping data files and is particularly useful in identifying possible causes when
they fail to import into SmartPlant Isometrics.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 26

The I-Data Integrator interface has been completely redesigned and the application has been
renamed SmartPlant Isometrics I-Data Integrator, and is licensed by an ISM license tag.

The software provides integration of data from ISOGEN-based applications to virtually any
system. Rather than relying on custom software development to achieve an interface, SmartPlant
Isometrics I-Data Integrator is configured using XML. Information from external sources such as
databases, spreadsheets, and other text files can also be processed to supplement the ISOGEN
output report file data, providing one complete set of data in the desired format.
Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 27

I-Convert has been renamed SmartPlant Isometrics I-Convert, and is licensed by an ISM
license tag.
SmartPlant Isometrics I-Convert has been enhanced to support the generation of reference data held
in 3D plant design systems (PDS

, PDMS, AutoPLANT, or CADWorx Plant Professional) in the

new Access MDB format. The MDB created can be opened directly in SmartPlant Material Editor.

The software also supports the generation of legacy I-Sketch 2007 format (.cat, .cif, .fdf, .spn, etc.)
reference data.
Note that the software does not currently offer support for the conversion of SmartPlant 3D
reference data.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 28

5. New features and functionality
5.1 Place components and fittings
All types of components can now be placed directly in the sketch using the improved pop-up
menus on the Place menu. This gives users greater flexibility in how they model their pipes,
and a larger range of components at their disposal to do this.

In I-Sketch, inline fittings, such as branch connections olets, nippolets, and elbows were
defined implicitly, via routing. For example, a cross component was constructed by modeling two
opposing tees. This method of creating a cross is no longer supported in SmartPlant Isometrics.
In SmartPlant Isometrics, real fitting components crosses, Y piece, three-way components
can now all be placed as real material items at the endpoints of routed lines.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 29

When placed generically, item code, description, sizes, end preparations, and SKEY can all be
defined using the new Physical dialog. For example, the inline legs of a 6 cross could be butt-
welded, whereas for the other two legs, one could be 1 and screwed and the other could be 2
and socket-welded.
5.2 Physical dialog displays and edits material
data properties
The new Physical dialog replaces the Properties dialog found in I-Sketch 2007. Its main purpose is
to display material data information for the selected component and permit modification of certain
editable properties. It is also used to define the properties item code, description, SKEY, length,
and end preparations of generic components.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 30

5.3 Multi-sheet feature enables user control of isometric
sheet content
The POD data model allows pipelines to be designed over several sheets, each sheet being an
infinitely large piece of paper. Any number of sheets can be placed into a pipeline.

Sheets enable the user to control the piping content documented by Personal ISOGEN on each
sheet. For example, Sheet 1 could contain a header, but all other sheets would contain the various
branch connections. Before sketching on a sheet, the Activate Sheet command is used to make
the sheet current.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 31

The new Connect Sheet feature connects coincident pipeline endpoints so that pipeline connectivity
is maintained across sheets. If this isnt done, Personal ISOGEN will usually detect disconnections
and generate disconnected drawings.

SmartPlant Isometrics will interrogate the model identifying all suitable end points running in
the same direction that could be connected together, displaying them to the user via this dialog:

Picking a suitable connection and clicking Connect makes the sheets become fully connected.
Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 32

When isometrics are eventually generated, a number of drawings equal to the number of sheets
used during design are produced. Pipeline continuation messages are displayed at connected
endpoints to show pipeline connectivity between sheets.

The Copy Coordinates feature enables pipes that share coincident endpoints to be connected in
series, with copied coordinates usually pasted into a 3D point placed on the other pipeline. In the
example below, the pipe was connected by assigning the coordinate of the gasket after the flange
on the pipe highlighted in green to the flange highlighted in red. This is only possible if no other
3D coordinates are applied to the pipe restricting its relocation in 3D space.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 33

5.4 Make Component Generic feature
In I-Sketch 2007, it wasnt possible to make a real component generic. The only way to do
thiswas to delete the existing component and then add the generic component to replace it.
The new Make Component Generic feature saves time and effort by removing these
unnecessary steps.

The user can immediately turn a fully-defined component into a generic component.
This eliminates the need to re-specify dimensions to position it in the pipe. Cut lengths
are automatically adjusted too.
5.5 Selection options extended
Extending the selection options available in I-Sketch, new selection options have been
added to SmartPlant Isometrics.

It is now possible to select:
All sketch components
J ust those contained in a single pipe or on a single sheet
An entire pipeline or connected network
This means that the user can make specific edits to the selected items that need them.
Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 34

5.6 Cut, Copy, and Paste features speed editing
and design
In I-Sketch 2007, it was very cumbersome to sketch repeated configurations. For example, it was
very time-consuming if several vertical branches having the same configuration needed to be added
to the model I-Sketch 2007 required that every branch had to be sketched individually. The only
other option was to sketch and save the branch in an .ISO file and repeatedly insert this several
times, but this too was inefficient.
SmartPlant Isometrics ability to edit pipeline data has been further extended by the addition of
new Cut, Copy, and Paste features.

The introduction of these new features greatly enhances the ability to modify the sketch, or quickly
add repeated piping configurations, enabling piping configurations to only be sketched once and
then copied and pasted several times.

Individual items, sections of pipe, or even complete pipelines can also be cut, copied, and pasted
between pipelines or sheets and, simultaneously before they are placed, have a transformation such
as a rotation applied.
Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 35

5.7 Rotate pipelines feature
In I-Sketch 2007, once the pipeline model orientation (North direction) was defined, it wasnt
possible to alter the orientation of the model. If it wasnt realized that the orientation set was
wrong until design was underway or even complete, the only way to correct this was to remodel
the entire pipeline.

In SmartPlant Isometrics, any portion or the complete pipeline itself can now be rotated to place
it in the required orientation. Rotation angles are not user-definable but are instead restricted to
90 degree turns about the primary orthogonal axis set. Once the rotation is applied, the model is
displayed in its new isometric presentation.

5.8 Mirror pipelines feature
Sections or whole pipelines can now be mirrored. This new feature significantly reduces design
time when piping configurations are repeated and symmetrical.

5.9 Show automatic dimension lines
Building on SmartPlant Isometrics ability to quickly add dimensions and automatically calculate
dimensions from known information is the ability to show all entered dimensions automatically
on the sketch.
Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 37

During pipeline design, as routes and configurations take shape, pipeline dimensions may change
often as the design evolves.
In I-Sketch 2007, dimensions could be entered quickly, but were not visible once added. The only
way to check what was entered was to use the dimensioning tool again, effectively a repeat of the
initial dimensioning. Having no on-screen visual indication of applied dimensions slowed design
progress and so was one area of much-needed improvement.
In SmartPlant Isometrics, the display of dimensions can be toggled on or off at any time, providing
instant feedback on the dimensions already entered. If existing dimensions need to be changed,
they are quickly altered by right-clicking on them and typing a new value.
Dimensions calculated automatically by SmartPlant Isometrics Smart Dimensioning functionality
are immediately displayed as soon as they are known.
It is important to note that the displayed dimensions in SmartPlant Isometrics are only for guidance
purposes. The final isometric drawings produced will be in accordance with the dimensioning style
configured for the style, applied by ISOGEN when drawings are generated.

5.10 Update Current View displays temporary drawings
in session
While design is ongoing, it may be necessary to generate isometric drawings to check presentation
or design content, such as checking the bill of materials. Update Current View runs Personal
ISOGEN in session and updates the sketch view to display the sketch as an isometric drawing.
This is only a temporary view and the border/backing sheet containing the title block, BOM, etc.
can be easily turned off using the new Show/Hide Background feature to return the user to the
detail (sketch only) view.

6.2 Add Origin toolbar icon replaced by Add Origin
hyperlink
The Add 3D Origin toolbar icon that existed in I-Sketch 2007 has been replaced by an
Add Origin hyperlink in SmartPlant Isometrics, located at the bottom of the Pipeline
Properties view.

6.3 Place tapping points
Taps can be placed on pipe or components. Tap logic has been improved to make the placing and
definition of taps much easier in SmartPlant Isometrics than it was in I-Sketch 2007. Taps can also
be added to the new fitting components. Tapping properties are editable using the Physical dialog.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 45

6.4 Place additional materials
Additional materials are usually materials that are not part of the core connectivity of the
pipeline design, but are still an essential part of the design or function of the pipe. For
example, a trunnion-type pipe support will be made on-site from a length of pipe and an
end-plate, welded to a structural steel member during erection of the pipe at the construction
site. The support can be attached to an elbow using the new Place Additional Material feature.

In I-Sketch 2007, additional materials were filtered from the specification and presented via a
list for user selection, then finally attached to the component. The only way to determine that
additional materials were assigned was to use the Associated Material dialog there was no
visual indication on the sketch itself.
In SmartPlant Isometrics, the material assignment process has been greatly simplified. Any
material, usually the current selection, can be placed on any component or section of pipe,
and is immediately visible on the sketch. To remove a material, simply select it, press delete,
and the material is removed.

6.5 Routing and definition of skews (offsets)
Skews (also commonly known as offsets) are usually modeled when the change to the pipe route
is more severe than just a slight deviation or fall. Skews are non-orthogonal sections of pipe that
represent the transition of a pipe route through 2D or 3D planes.
In SmartPlant Isometrics, the definition and dimensioning of skews has been improved so that the
user has full control over which characteristics of the skew are used to calculate the skew geometry
and skewed pipe length. All skew properties are now edited in the Properties window rather than
using the individual 2D and 3D skew dimensioning dialogs that existed in I-Sketch 2007.

The presentation of skew axes (also known as skew components) can also be changed. The skew
can also be displayed as a traditional skew box if required.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 47

In addition to these improvements, it is now possible to:
Collapse a skew Turn a 3D skew into a 2D skew by eliminating one of its three skew axes.
Or, turn a 2D skew into an orthogonal section of pipe by eliminating one of its two skew axes.

2D skew made flat by collapsing vertical axis

Reflect a skew Switch a skews appearance to its opposite orientation. For example, a skew
running E 45 U would run E 45 D after being reflected about the E/W horizontal plane, having
selected the vertical skew component as the reflected axis.

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 48

Skew reflected about horizontal axis

Rotate a 2D skew Rotate the axis 90 degrees either clockwise or anti-clockwise around the
other skew axis. Elbow/bend geometry is maintained.

2D skew rotated counter-clockwise about vertical skew component

Whats New in SmartPlant

Isometrics White Paper Page 49

Using the new Make Skew feature, an orthogonal section of pipe can now have one of its endpoints
dragged to turn it into a 2D skew. A 3D skew can be created in much the same way by skewing the
orthogonal section of pipe before or after a 2D skew.

Grabbing the endpoint and dragging upwards to produce a 2D skew

7. Integration
SmartPlant Isometrics offers integration with several SmartPlant Enterprise products.
Integration is also available with SmartPlant Review via SmartPlant Review Publisher.

7.1 SmartPlant Foundation
SmartPlant Isometrics includes a SmartPlant Publish adaptor, enabling POD material data and the
POD file itself to be published to the SmartPlant Foundation database.
7.2 SmartPlant Materials
A direct link between ISOGEN and SmartPlant Materials already exists, but this requires ISOGEN
report data to be output in a rigid, fixed format before it can be used in SmartPlant Materials.
SmartPlant Materials can retrieve the POD material data published by SmartPlant Isometrics to the
SmartPlant Foundation database and report on it in a variety of ways using its extensive range of
reporting capabilities.

7.3 SmartPlant Reference Data
Reference data held in SmartPlant Reference Data can be exported for use in SmartPlant
Isometrics. This enables customers who have already implemented the software to reuse
their existing investment in reference data in SmartPlant Isometrics. By avoiding the need
to re-create data from scratch, users can save valuable time and effort.
SmartPlant Reference Data, once configured, exports reference data to SmartPlant Isometrics
in text format. This data can be imported into SmartPlant Materials Editor. After import, the data
can be manipulated to produce piping specification MDB files for use in SmartPlant Isometrics.
