Fatal Stabbing: Teen Boys Charged

A 13-year-old boy has been charged
with murder over the death of Auckland
dairy owner Arun Kumar.
Mr Kumar, 57, a former Nadi resident
was allegedly stabbed in the neck during
what police described as an aggravated
robbery at Railside Dairy in Henderson.
Two boys, aged 12 and 13, were being
spoken to by police.
Police said the 13-year-old had been
charged with aggravated robbery and
murder. The 12-year-old had been
charged with aggravated robbery.
Both boys had been placed into the
custody of a secure Child Youth and
Family facility, ahead of their court
appearance in the Waitakere Youth
Court, police said.
Police arrived at the dairy on Great
North Rd around 7:30am, Detective
Inspector Bruce Scott told a media
briefing at Waitakere Police Station.
Ambulance staff gave assistance but
Mr Kumar had suffered a wound in his
neck and died at the scene. Mr Kumar's
wife was with him at the time of the
attack and was unharmed, police said.
Mr Scott said police had gathered
CCTV footage from the dairy and
nearby shops and were speaking to
witnesses.
"There are quite a few people out and
about at 7:30," he said.
He urged anyone else who was in the
area at the time to contact police.
People at Mr Kumar's home in
Henderson said the family was too
upset to speak to media.
Nearby shop owners described Mr
Kumar as a "really nice guy" who was

well known to other shop owners in

that section of the street.
Lawyer Bernie Allen, from a nearby
law firm, said he always bought his
supplies from the dairy, and staff was
shocked by news of the stabbing.
"They were the most beautiful couple
you could ever meet," he said of the
Kumars.
"We're feeling deeply for his wife. It's too
early to understand it all but we feel like our
precinct, our people, has been violated."
He described the incident as
inexplicable.
"I'm deeply saddened by it."
He described Mr Kumar as "the
quiet one", and his wife as a bubbly,
outgoing lady. They were well known
in the area, a busy section of shops and
businesses, he said.
"They served us wonderfully and it
will not be the same with him gone."
John Tuapiki, who lives close by, went
to the bakery next door to the dairy
about 6am, before the shop opened, but
didn't see anything unusual.
He was shocked to learn of Mr Kumar's
death.
"He was a good man, a really good man.
He would help the street kids, he would
give drinks out, and bits and pieces,
and when you get money you just go
back and pay him, that's how good he
was. He'd look after everyone."
He described Mr Kumar as "very well
known" in the area.
Mr Tuapiki said he wasn't surprised
to hear the incident was a stabbing,
because a youth had been threatening
people on the street with a large knife

asking for cigarettes.

It's understood the Kumars owned the
dairy for about five years.
Te Atatu MP, Phil Twyford expressed
his deep concern over the stabbing.
"This is an awful tragedy for the

Tribe Demands $1.62M From

Casino Developers
FORMER Casino investors, the
members of Snoqualmie Indian Tribe of
Washington in the US, are demanding
nothing less than $1.62 million from
developers of the project One Hundred
Sands Limited.
In court documents filed by the tribe
council in the Kings County Court in
Washington, the tribe alleges that One
Hundred Sands Ltd chairman Larry
Claunch had breached a promissory
note that highlighted the repayment
of the $1.5m investment made by the
tribe.
"Despite their obligation to make
final payment to the tribe no later
than February 2, 2014, the defendants
(One Hundred Sands) have refused
to satisfy their debt under the note
leaving an outstanding indebtedness
of $1.5million plus interest at the
contractual rate of four per cent per
annum until paid in full," the lawsuit
stated.
"By failing and refusing to timely
perform their obligations under the
note, defendants have breached their
contractual obligations to the tribe
under the note, thereby, causing the
tribe substantial damage.
"As a direct and proximate result of
the defendants conduct, the tribe has
suffered actual damages in an amount
determined at trial, but in any event,
not less than approximately $1.62m."
In mid-2011, representatives of the
tribe were approached with a proposal
to invest in the casino and resort

project.
The lawsuit revealed that based
on recommendations from a tribal
delegation that visited Fiji in December,
2011, the Snoqualmie Tribe Council
determined the project presented an
opportunity to diversify the tribe's
economy to the long-term benefit of
the tribe as well as the people of Fiji.
On February 2, 2012, the council
passed a resolution authorising the
investment of the $1.5m in the project
while One Hundred Sands Ltd executed
a promissory note, a convertible
purchase note and a subscription
agreement with the tribe in which the
tribe agreed to loan the money.
One Hundred Sands Ltd chairman
Larry Claunch has maintained that the
company would not be distracted from
its primary focus of completing the
construction of the $290m casino and
resort near Denarau Island.
Minister for Tourism and AttorneyGeneral
Aiyaz
Sayed-Khaiyum
recently said the government would
address the issue this week.
He said the licence agreement between
government and One Hundred Sands
was a separate issue.
"It's the same way if you give
somebody a licence to import a foreign
chicken, just because they get sued by
a company it does not mean that you
will stop their licence. But in respect
to their ability to adhere to the licence
per se, that is something that we are
looking at very closely at the moment."

THE High Court in Suva jailed a

62-year-old man for two years for
throwing a spear at his son and gravely
injuring him.
Asalusi Deni was charged with act with
intent to cause grievous harm, a charge
he pleaded guilty to.
He admitted that on May 11 last year,
he had a fight with his son where
punches were exchanged.
The son had returned from a "boozeup" and started uttering obscenities
after he was told there was no food in
the house.
After this, the son threw stones on the
roof of the house.
This developed into a fight between
the two, after which Deni got a fishing

spear and threw it at his son, injuring

him in the neck. The son was admitted
in the hospital for a month.
After the guilty plea, Deni's son and
wife gave their sworn affidavit to the
court. The son said he had reconciled
with his father because Deni was
provoked by him.
The wife, however, told the court that
the family had been living in a cycle
of violence for years and feared for her
life if Deni was released.
Justice Salesi Temo said the use of a
spear was no way to resolve a fight.
He also made orders so that when Deni
gets released from jail, he does not act
violently or threateningly towards his
family.

The prime minister of Fiji attended

a private dinner last Friday night in
Santa Rosa, where he was met by a
vocal group of several dozen Fijian
protesters, many of whom said they
were denied access to the event.
Commodore
Josaia
Voreqe
Bainimarama, also known as Frank
Bainimarama, arrived in a motorcade
of black vehicles just after 7 p.m. at
the Finley Community Center's Person
Auditorium.
Bainimarama's car passed about 50
demonstrators who held up signs that
said Free Fiji and Stop the Violence
in Fiji as it headed around the back of
the auditorium, where he was escorted
into the building to speak to a group of
about 150 people, organizers said.
He's here to spend time and visit with
the Fiji people in this area, said Ben
Nawagauou of San Rafael, a childhood
friend of Bainimarama, who helped
organize the event. Those people
(the protesters) don't know what
they're talking about. They don't know
anything about him.

Bainimarama seized power in a

2006 coup and in 2009, the country's
constitution was abrogated. His
actions have drawn the ire of native
pro-democracy groups and led to
the country's expulsion from the
Commonwealth of Nations, an
intergovernmental organization of
former British colonies and territories.
Fiji is an archipelago of about 330
islands in the central Pacific Ocean.
It became independent in 1970 under
a parliamentary democracy, but since
Bainimarama's coup, the country's
fourth since 1987, there has not been
a democratically elected government.
Bainimarama announced plans to hold
elections in September, but leaders of
an American-based pro-democracy
movement called the Democracy and
Freedom for Fiji Movement, who
organized Friday's protest, say they
doubt the elections will be held fairly.
All we want is for him to step aside
and allow our country to have free and
fair elections, said Vilisi Nadaku, 49,
of Santa Rosa.

A MAN charged and produced in the

Suva Magistrates Court for importation
of the hard drug known as "ice" says he
fears for his life.
Shalendra Shalvin Edwin Narayan,
37, is charged with one count of
importation of an illicit drug, namely
methamphetamine, worth around
$350,000 which he allegedly received
concealed in chocolate cookies sent
from the US.
In court, divisional prosecution officer
Mohammed Yunus said the offence
was an indictable one that the High
Court should hear as the penalty was
a $1million fine or life imprisonment.
He said there was presumption of
bail which the prosecution objected
to because there were other accused
persons to be charged and the
investigation was ongoing.
Mr Yunus said Mr Narayan had told the
police in his caution interview that he
was in danger from other accomplices.
The court proceedings were then

translated in Hindi and explained to

Mr Narayan.
He said he wanted bail because he
wanted to spend time with his family.
Mr Narayan looked confused in court
when he explained that he would be
safe at home.
Mr Yunus submitted that the accused
be remanded for seven days and on the
next court date the case be transferred
to the High Court.
Mr Narayan will be brought to court
next Wednesday.
According to police and Fiji Revenue
and Customs Authority, they had been
conducting a joint operation since
April this year.
In a statement issued by FRCA, the
cookies were discovered on Sunday,
June 9, and were sent from abroad.
The cookies tested positive for
methamphetamine and the 226.3
grams of the drugs discovered had an
estimated street value of $350,000.

236 Booked For Smoking In

Public

Smoking is strictly banned in public

places and the Ministry of Health has
stepped up its drive against smokers.
So far this year 236 people have been
booked for smoking in public places.
The ministrys Tobacco Control
Enforcement Unit manager, Aminiasi
Tavui, said they were carrying out
surveillance and were stepping up their
enforcement duties.
If anyone is found smoking in such
areas by enforcement officers, the
landlord will be fined $1000 whilst the
person smoking will be fined $200,
Mr Tavui said.

He said these fines needed to be paid

within 21 days in default of 20 days in
prison.
Fiji has joined other Pacific island
countries in achieving the Tobacco
Free Pacific 2025 goal.
Mr Tavui said they had adopted the
Tobacco Free Pacific 2025 goal which
aimed to reduce tobacco use to less
than five per cent.
Smokers should always think of nonsmokers before they light up a cigarette
because every person has the right to
breathe clean air as it is a basic human

Govt Building Arsonists Jailed

Two former security guards who were

convicted in March for willfully and
unlawfully setting fire to a building at
Government Buildings were sentenced
to eight years in jail by the High Court
in Suva.
The court heard that Isikeli Nakato
and Antonio Matairatu of Matrix Fiji
on June 25, 2012, poured diesel on a
structure of the court house and set the
same on fire.
Nakato was asked by a third party to
burn the Magistrates court No. 6 down
for $5000. Nakato then asked Matairatu
to assist him burn the building down.
They then fled the scene when the
building was on fire but luckily
the security guards at Government
Buildings saw the fire and managed to
put it out.

Justice Salesi Temo said if it was not

for the guards quick action Magistrate
court No. 6 would have been burnt to
the ground.
The aggravating factors were that
the accused persons deliberately set
out to challenge the judicial arm of
Government by burning the Magistrate
court No. 6 and also the court house is
a public property.
It was paid for and maintained by the
taxpayers of this country; to burn it is
an affront to the public purse, Justice
Temo said.
The court heard that the convicted persons
were 38 years and 48 years old respectively,
married with children and were the sole
breadwinners of their families.
The duo will serve seven years before
they are eligible for parole.

Mobile Phones Top Complaints

List

The quality of mobile phones, their

features and the unavailability of backup service top the list of complaints
made to the Consumer Council of Fiji
from 1st January to 15th May of this
year.
Consumer Council Chief Executive
Officer Premila Kumar said mobile
phones; electronic goods and landlord
tenancy related grizzles top the list of
complaints received by the Council in
the first four-and-a-half months of this
year.
We have recorded a total of 541
complaints, with a monetary value of
$1,174,657.93, from 1 January to 15
May, 2014.Our success rate in resolving
these cases through mediation has been
a gratifying 84.5%, Kumar said.
Complaints relating to mobile phones
dominate the list at 91, second-ranked
is electronic goods, standing at 78, and
landlordtenancy differences clocked
in third with 65.
Kumar said this was the first time mobile
phone issues have topped the Top
Ten list of complaints received at the
Council, proving an earnest contender
to landlord and tenancy issues, which
had previously dominated the top ten

issues at the Council for the period

2008 to 2012.
As is happening elsewhere in
the world, more and more Fijian
consumers are now spending on
mobile phones, either for making calls,
texting or accessing internet. Day by
day, more shops are opening and more
vendors setting up their tables around
the country, selling all different types
of mobile phones.
Kumar has also warned consumers to
be on the alert at all times.
No doubt, we do see shoddy products,
and counterfeit and refurbished
products entering our markets, so as
consumers, we need to be on the alert.
Incautious impulse buying can go
before a nasty fall.
Due to this high rate in complaints on
mobile phones the Council has decided
to keep tab on mobile phone shops,
especially the new ones selling fancy,
trendy mobile phones.
Among other complaints, we have
recorded grievances over mobile
services and utilities, including the
Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) and
the Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA),
Kumar said.

Blood Donors Need To Be Honest:

Blood Service
8

Fiji's National Blood Service (FNBS)

says tests are done on donated blood to
ensure that is safe for transfusion, but
there are risks it may not detect early
signs of Sexually Transmitted Diseases
(STD).
Hence, Joseva Bolaqace, National
Manager Blood & Ambulance Services,
says people wanting to give blood need to
give correct information about their status.
"The donor needs to be truthful about
his/her status if they really have the
heart to help others needing it. We
have strict procedure and questions
and criteria and those answering those
forms should give the truth about
themselves," Bolaqace said.
"At the end of the day, it's not for us
at the blood service, but for patients
out there who require safe blood for
another chance at life."
In Fiji, since the blood service program
started in 2006, they have never had
any cases or complaints from patients
who may have contracted a disease
through donated blood.
"So it assures that blood we giving out
are safe. In fact before any transfusion
is done, blood is tested again," he said.
"We also have a look-back policy,
in place since 2009 which deals with
cases that are referred back to us. We
have never had any negative case
referred back to us."

Bolaqace says at the moment they

have enough supply in the blood banks
as a result of the current blood drive
leading up to World Blood Donor Day
on Saturday, but hopes that healthy
people will continue to come forward
daily to donate.
The blood bank needs about 50 donors
a day to ensure sufficient supply and
the blood banks topped up.
CWM Hospital Medical Superintendent
Dr Jemesa Tudravu said there have
been occasions when patients' lives
have only been saved because there
was blood in the Blood Bank donated
by voluntary donors.
"I would like to encourage more
healthy people to become regular
voluntary donors and help keep our
blood banks full. The aim is for 100
per cent voluntary donations by 2018."
In 2013, the FNBS collected 13,593
donations of blood.
The world blood donor day activities
continue all week with a program for
blood drives at subdivision hospitals
in Viti Levu every day this week.
Celebrations culminate in Ba on
Saturday with a full program of events
and presentations.
Meanwhile, donors whose blood is
tested positive for any STD will be
contacted by the FNBS nurse and
referred for treatment and counseling.

Fiji's National Airline's Promise

FIJI'S national airline has vowed to

continue its efforts to build the Fiji
brand and put the country on the global
map following the arrival of the Fiji
Link flagship ATR 72-600 aircraft in
Suva last week.
Fiji Airways CEO Stefan Pichler said
the rebranding of Pacific Sun as Fiji
Link was not just a change of paint on
the aircraft but brought about unique
changes such as new uniforms for the
cabin crew and an enhanced on board
product.
"In fact, it's not even about getting a
new aircraft. It is about connecting Fiji
Link to our hearts and to our souls, and
this seems much easier with Fiji Link
than with Pacific Sun," he said.
"Our friends in the Pacific will see how

a commercially well managed national

airline is able to boost a country's
economic growth.
"We are also developing our capital
Suva. Only last month, we launched
direct Suva to Sydney services, twice
a week.
"We brought the new ATR 72-600 to
Suva, and will also service Apia and
Vila and Nadi from Suva and more
to come as we will develop Suva into
the business hub of the South Pacific,
while letting Nadi remain the dominant
tourism hub."
He said this would not be done
overnight, adding the Fiji Airways
Group shared a dream to create the best
global boutique airline with "the most
personal guest service".

64 New HIV Infections In 2013:

Health

Fiji recorded 64 new cases of Human

Immunodeficiency (HIV) syndrome
infections in 2013.
This brings to 546 the cumulative total
since 1989. At the end of 2012 there
were 482 confirmed infections.
Fiji's Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma has
assured the government's commitment
whilst ensuring
8 to address the issue and medicine is
the required treatment
available to all infected persons.
have
8 "Health care workersin strengthened
their
capacity
recognizing,
diagnosing, treating and caring for all

patients either infected or affected by

HIV, "Dr Sharma said.
"Fiji introduced treatment for HIV for
the first time in 2004 which had almost
10 drugs, but now we have, "one pill
a day" available for all our patients in
need of treatment."
Meanwhile, of the 482 cases as of
December end in 2012, the majority
were reported to be heterosexually
transmitted, 13 were transmitted
through male-to-male sex, one through
injecting drug use and 24 through
prenatal transmission.

Bill Of Rights Case Takes New

Twist
Fiji's first case under the 2013 Kamal Kumar that after meeting the
Constitution's Bill of Rights (right to
housing) has taken a new twist.
After talks of settlement terms, the High
court in Suva heard that Harry Auta and
others had written to their counsel, Aca
Rayawa, informing him that they have
rejected the settlement terms.
The case was filed in the Suva High
Court by descendants of Solomon
islanders who settled on Namara
settlement along Khalsa Road near
Suva. They challenged the Housing
Authority's right to force them to vacate
the land so it could be developed.
Plaintiff Counsel Rayawa told Justice

plaintiffs, they have all written to him

instructing him that they have rejected
the offer.
Rayawa asked Justice Kumar for more
time to be given as he has yet to receive
two submissions from two more clients
who have yet to hand him their thoughts
on the settlement terms set by Housing
Authority counsel Davenash Sharma.
Justice Kumar had informed the court
that he had already drawn up his
ruling which was to be done Tuesday,
however due to the request from the
plaintiffs counsel, he has given them
until June 27 to hear the case.

Fiji's Roy Ravana Jnr competes at the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Athletics
Roy Ravana Jnr, a 21-year-old runner
and Pacific Games bronze medalist,
was shot dead in a drive-by shooting in
Sacramento on Monday.
The former Marist Brothers High
School student, who studied at the Iowa
Community College, had been named
in Fiji's squad for the Commonwealth
Games in Glasgow.
Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama
has expressed his shock and sadness at
the killing.
"Like all Fijians, I am appalled that
Roy - an innocent bystander - should
lose his life in this way," he said.
"To have his life cut short when he had
so much promise is a terrible tragedy.
"Many people dream of being given an
opportunity to pursue success overseas.
Roy was living that dream when he
died. And many young Fijians, even
those who didn't know him personally,
will feel a sense of shock and loss at
his passing."
The President of Athletics Fiji, Joseph
Rodan Snr, has described the death as
the saddest day for Fijian athletics.
"This is the sad day for Athletics Fiji
losing one of our promising athlete, an
athlete who is groomed and developed

for Fiji and had a lot of potentials," he

told the Fiji Sun.
"Athletics Fiji mourns the loss of our
asset and our deepest condolences to
the family during this difficult time."
Roy Ravana Snr has confirmed his son
was killed as he ran to help another
child who had been shot.
CBS News in Sacramento reported that
one person was dead and another was
injured after the shooting.
The police said one person had been
taken into custody near the scene.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's
Department is investigating the
circumstances which led to the
shooting.
Lani Takiveikata has told the Fiji Times
Roy Ravana Jnr was friends with her
sons and had spent the weekend at her
home.
"Roy was not part of a gang, he was
at the wrong place at the wrong time,"
she said.
"For those living in the US, we know
that during a shooting we take cover by
dropping flat on the ground.
"This did not happen with Roy. He ran.
And one of the shooters took a fatal
aim at him."

Students Need Not Pay School

Fees: Dr Brij Lal
Children who attend schools that
are still to receive their education
grant need not to pay any fees, Fijis
Education
Ministry
Permanent
Secretary Dr Brij Lal clarifies.
The students of the 10 high schools and
a little over 100 primary schools that
are still to submit their audited 2013
accounts will not need to pay for their
education for the second school term.
Dr Lal said students will not be disadvantaged
over the school managements failure to
produce audited accounts as required by the
deadline on May 31.
He also assured the schoolwork of
these students have not been affected
in anyway by the delay.
School is going on as normal. We
believe they have funds to carry on. If
they were in trouble they would have

audited long time ago, Dr Lal said.

Dr Lal says schools will eventually
receive the grant when their audited
accounts are submitted.
To help these schools speed up the
process, the ministry has sent teams to
the schools to help in the auditing work
and submission process.
Our teams are at the school, sitting
with them to audit their repots, Dr Lal
said. As soon as they are audited, we
will release funds.
We will give the funds as soon as it
is audited. The only thing is now the
delay. We should have paid them a
month earlier.
A total of 898 schools qualify for the
free education grant. The ministry has
set aside $21million in grant for the
second school term.

Australian Court Disqualifies,

Fines Fijian National
A Fijian national seeking permanent
residency in Australia to join his
wife and twins has been fined and
disqualified from driving for 15 months
after he was caught drink-driving in
May this year.
As reported the 25-year-old Jone
Lesumainaivalu told police he got
behind the wheel to buy more beer.
He pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool
Magistrates Court to drink-driving
charges.

Lesumainaivalu was stopped by police

on May 25 after he was seen driving
erratically. He gave police a high
blood-alcohol reading of .154.
Police said he had been at a party, and
then arrived home before leaving again
to find more alcohol.
His counsel, Xavier Farrelly has told
the court his client knew drink-driving
was culturally unacceptable in both
Australia and Fiji.
Lesumainaivalu was also fined $750.

Intercontinental Opens Sales Office In Los Angeles

InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort &
Spa has upped its efforts to target
the American market with the recent
opening of a dedicated sales office in
the US.
Area general manager, Erik Stuebe,
said with Fiji Airways flying directly
from Los Angeles, it was a well thought
out move by the resort.
Fiji as perceived from many countries
as a mysterious, wonderful, Bali Haitype of destination and we need to
capitalise on that in the US and the
European markets, he said.
I can announce that we have opened
an office in Los Angeles this month.
The resort will also be considering
opening up other offices in other parts
of the world, just dedicated to them.
Fiji Airways flies directly from Los
Angeles here but of course they fly
from other parts of the world too.
In parts of the world like Korea and
Japan which access Fiji through Korea
and China market which accesses Fiji
through Hong Kong- those markets
are more easily represented by travel
partners such as wholesalers and travel
agents.
But in North America, there is no
substitute for an on the ground sales
representative.
We feel we need to work very closely
with the Fiji Hotel and Tourism
Association and Fiji Airways to make

sure there is a win-win between the

people who bring customers to Fiji and
us as part of the industry.
Meeting demand
Mr Stuebe said Fiji being a seasonal
destination, hotels needed to focus on
being meeting venues as well.
Fiji is very seasonal destination. Fiji
depends mainly on Australia and New
Zealand markets at the moment and
that depends on families travelling on
school holidays, he said.
Its important to have other strings to
your bow and arrows in your quiver
than just the family market.
The Denarau hotels have done a
very good job with meetings and that
market will be very important for the
whole country. Meetings are also an
important segment for all of us.
Birthday celebrations
The Fiji National Provident Fundowned resort is celebrating its fifth
birthday.
For Mr Stuebes team, their success
over the years has been a culmination
of dedicated staff and team work and
their community support.
First of all, and very important has
been our location. Natadola beach is
famous, it always needed some sort
of high-end property and we are very
proud it is our property, he said.
We are slowly educating the travel
agencies and business market that

MULTI
CULTURE

guests dont necessarily have to spend

their time on a small outer island to be
on a white beach, with beautiful water,
surf and reef.
You can do that on the main land too.
That is very rare to find that in Fiji.
Secondly, it has been very important
for us to be strong community partners
and to do that responsibly.
Because we are surrounded by a
number of villages, we have had to
engage every strongly to make sure

that what we do supports what they

want.
We have 130 employees from the
villages and in addition to that we have
29 nannies from the village and we
have five separate tours going to the
villages.
If you think about all of that in the
scheme of villages and the local needs
of the population, before the hotel was
here, none of that was here, so that is
another plank of our success.

Scholarship Apology By USP

THE University of the South Pacific
has apologised at the way one of its
students' scholarship was terminated.
While Tamanirarama Jone's scholarship
was reinstated earlier this week,
USP has also expressed regret at the
experience he went through, insisting
it was in no way an attempt to "restrict
attendance at any political event".
In a statement issued, USP explained
what transpired some three weeks ago.
"A member of USP staff wrote to the
student indicating that the student's
intention not to attend a field trip, an
integral component of his course, was
not appropriate," the USP said in a
statement.
"She had copied this correspondence to
the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs because

the student was on their scholarship.

"The intention of the USP staff was to
alert the sponsor of the scholarship that
its sponsored student had chosen not to
take part in a field trip, based on Mr
Tamanirarama's advice at that point in
time.
"There was no intention on the part of
the university to restrict attendance at
any political event.
"Its intention was simply to ensure
that an important assessed course
was properly attended and TSLB was
copied in to ensure that they are aware
that the student is missing this field trip
paid by Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, as
the sponsor. The reference to political
campaigning wrongly became an
issue."

Some staff of Punja and Sons Limited

are believed to have been laid off. While
official word on this is yet to come from
the directors of the company, sources
from within the company confirm that
staff from a number of departments
have been sent home.
Punjas Fiji director Rajesh Punja had
asked for questions on the matter to be

emailed to him. No response has since

come from his office.
Punjas Group marketing manager
Gopal Jadhav said the company would
not be commenting on this issue for
now.
Punjas, headquartered in Lautoka is
a manufacturer, and distributor of a
range of products in Fiji and Pacific.

Westpac, Government Partner

For Financial Literacy
Westpac Bank Fiji has been chosen
to be the facilitators for financial
literacy training to women and micro
entrepreneurs from low income
households.
A memorandum of understanding was
signed by the bank general manager
Adrian Hughes and the Minister for
Social Welfare, Women and Poverty
Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni.
Mr Hughes said: This partnership has
three main objectives the first being to
help women micro-entrepreneurs gain
financial education and business skills
training.
Also, it is to manage money in a
way that they are able to open bank
accounts, save money and re-invest in
their business.
Lastly, it is to understand the concept
and make use of business expansion

via microfinance options.

Dr Luveni said the agreement was
another step to enhance the partnership
between the ministry and Westpac after
the project was rolled out earlier this
year.
This has actually taken out a lot of our
work particularly in trying to make our
income generating work because of our
technical assistance of basics business
running, she said.
We can teach them how to cook, sew
and do all these handicrafts but to actually
market them and produce them in such a
way to make it a success in business is
the gap that needed to be addressed.
This partnership will help womens
group in managing their business to
make a success of it especially business
that started in the early years but were
not successful.

Two Suva men, who used two teenage

sisters to provide sexual services for
clients, were given long jail sentences
by the High Court in Suva for human
trafficking and slavery.
Inoke Raikadroka and Mohammed
Sheefaz Jameer Sagaitu were sentenced
to 16 years and 12 years respectively.
The court heard that in 2012 Raikadroka
met four girls in a nightclub of which three
were sisters aged 18, 17 and 15 years.
Because girls X-17 years and Y-15
years were destitute, Raikadroka
made them a proposition where they
were treated at the Elixir motel where
Raikadroka stayed with them for two
to three months after asking them if
they were prepared to work for him.
The girls would provide sexual services
to clients arranged by Raikadroka and
after getting paid they would give the
payments to Raikadroka who would
pay for their accommodation, food,
and they would get beautification
treatment, clothes and nice shoes.
The court heard that the two girls
came from a dysfunctional family with
their drunkard dad and their neurotic
grandmother and many times there was
no food at home and the girls went to
school without any food.
At one time, Raikadroka went to Nadi
to try something new and the two
sisters later went to Nadi to provide
sexual services on arrangement by
Raikadroka.
Justice Paul Madigan on the case of
slavery started his sentence on a term
of 10 years and for aggravating factors
of slavery of young girls, he added
another five years and for long term
slavery he added another two years.

For mitigation, he looked at the fact that

Raikadroka was 24 years and currently
unemployed, he dropped out of school
early and he had sharing experiences
with the girls for coming from broken
families.
He also saw the fact that Raikadroka
did not intend to be a slave master, was
still serving a suspended sentence for
theft, had a pathetic upbringing and
was generous to the girls he subtracted
three years to give Raikadroka a
sentence of 14 years.
On domestic trafficking, Justice
Madigan started with a sentence of 15
years and added three years for training
demonstrations given to the girls
and later deducted two years to give
Raikadroka a 16 year sentence.
The sentence would be served
concurrently and Raikadroka will have
a 16 year jail term with a minimum of
14 years before being eligible for parole.
For Mohammed Sagaitu, Justice
Madigan started with a term of 15 years
and later subtracted two years looking
at the mitigation factors where Sagaitu
was only 24 years of age and had no
previous convictions.
He was sentenced to 12 years jail for
each of his two counts of trafficking,
with a minimum 10 years before parole.
Justice Madigan has also ordered
the Corrections department to give
Raikadrokas mobile phone to a friend
Manoa, through the Director of Public
Prosecutions Office.
For Sagaitu, Justice Madigan has
ordered that his photo album be
returned to his sister Catherine.

Suspended Sentence For

Manslaughter Couple

Mesake Raburau and Salote Katia

are counting their lucky stars after
a possible maximum sentence for
manslaughter arising from breach
of duty for 12 years imprisonment
was suspended by High Court judge
Prabaharan Kumararatnam in Suva.
The couple from Tumavia, Nakelo
in Tailevu were charged with
manslaughter arising from breach of
duty after their son aged 1year and 4
months was found floating in a river
near their home on February 23, last
year.
Their son Ilai Tuikabe Raburau was
said to be under the care of both parents
on the day in question and was playing
inside and at times was seen outside
the house.
However it was only after Ilais
grandmother came to ask Ilais parents
of his whereabouts that they realised
he was missing, but his mother, Salote,
thought that Ilai had gone with some of
their relatives that came from overseas
to town.
She was however uncertain and this
resulted in a search conducted only to

find the deceased floating in the river.

A post mortem conducted on the
deceased showed that he died from
asphyxiation due to drowning.
The court heard that the deceaseds dad
is 35 years and his mother is 26 years
of age and they have a 3 year old child
with another baby born few months
after the incident.
Justice Kumararatnams aggravating
factors were that the deceased was
1year 4 months at the time of death and
that his parents had breached their duty
of care.
However in the mitigating factors, he
said the accuseds pleaded not guilty
even before the trial began, they were
married with two children and that the
father of the deceased was the sole
breadwinner in his family.
He started with a term of 24 months and
added six months for the aggravating
factors and deducted another six
months for the mitigating factors.
Justice Kumararatnam then suspended
the 24 months sentence for two years
taking the sentencing and penalties
decree of 2009 into consideration.

Fiji Airways Dips Slightly, Still

Above 80%

Fiji Airways has reported an on-time

performance of 80 per cent in May, a
slight dip from 87.8 per cent announced
in April.
The result still sees the airline retain its
goal of surpassing 80 per cent average
on-time performance.
Its regional and domestic subsidiary,
Fiji Link, continues to deliver sterling
on-time performance, with 94.5 per cent
for May. It reported 96 per cent in April.
Fiji Airways Group managing director/
chief executive, Stefan Pichler, said:
The results of May are driven by
some minor mechanical issues with

our aircraft.
This obviously needed to be rectified
before the flight, the knock on effect
of those issues, and some bad weather.
The delays ranged from a few minutes
to four hours. We strive to out-perform
every month, but safety is always first.
I apologise to our customers affected.
He added: We farewelled Pacific Sun
with a last stellar OTP performance.
From now on, we expect Fiji Link to
follow suit. The brand new ATR 72-600
starts services this week and should be
able to contribute to this performance
as well.

Home-Owners Grant Available

This Month

Individuals or couples looking for

government assistance to buy or build
their first residential homes can from this
month apply for a share of a $10million
grant set aside by the Fijian Government
as announced in their 2014 Budget.
Local commercial banks will start
receiving applications for the grant
under the new housing scheme from
June 16.
Under the scheme, $10,000 will be
given to those who intend to build
their first residential home and $5000
for those who intend to buy their first
residential home.
In a government advertisement in one
of the dailies this week, the Attorney
General and acting Housing Minister
Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum released the
criterion that must be met by applicants
and the process that will follow from
which government will determine the
successful applicants.
The grant will be available to
individuals or couples with an annual
income or joint annual income of not
more than $50,000.
The individuals or couples should be
buying or building their first residential
home. They must be above the age of
18 years and must meet the respective
commercial banks loan criteria.

Applicants must also complete home

loan application forms along with all
necessary documentation as required
by the respective bank. The applicants
must state in writing at the time of
the application, his or her intention of
using the grant to contribute towards
his or her finances.
All applications will be assessed by the
respective commercial banks at which
the application was lodged.
The eligible applicant must give written
consent to the bank to allow the bank to
forward a copy of relevant documentation
to the Ministry of Housing.
Once the respective banks has assessed
an application, and confirmed the
eligibility of the applicants, the
bank will then provide the relevant
documentation to the ministry.
Upon receipt of the relevant documentation
from the bank, the ministry will confirm
the grant, as long as the criterion is met.
Grants, the government says will be
awarded on a first-come-first-serve
basis.
It further says that if in the case the
value of total applications received
by the ministry at one time, exceeds
the government grant or the balance
thereof, then those applications will be
put into a draw.

The Ministry of Education is aware

of students selling bus tickets to other
students.
The
Permanent
Secretary
for
Education, Dr Brij Lal, confirmed that
they were aware of this.
What the students are doing is illegal;
those that are caught doing this will be
taken to task, he said.
Dr Lal said the distribution of tickets
are controlled by the schools however
he was not aware that certain schools
were issuing tickets to students that
would last them a week.
There is supposed to be two tickets
given in a day; one in the morning and
one in the afternoon, he said.

He said the bus tickets or vouchers

were only issued to students who met
the criteria. Students are only eligible
to receive the bus tickets if both parents
earn below $15,000 or are unemployed.
He said the ministry would check with
schools on this case. This also followed
a report mentioned by the ministry on
a radio talkback show that there had
been evidence of abuse in bus vouchers.
They identified cases where buses from
Suva were receiving tickets that should
only be used in the Nausori areas.
The ministry will soon dispatch a team to
schools to conduct an audit on the issuing
of bus vouchers to students and have
warned users to not abuse the system.

BANK DECLINED PROGRAM

$14M Paid Out, 307 Schools Yet

To Comply

Fijis Ministry of Education has so far

paid out $14 million to 591 schools as
Term 2 grants.
And the Ministry is still awaiting
the submission of audited financial
accounts and the Annual general
meeting minutes for 2013 from 307
schools and they still have time until
May 31 to do so.
The Ministry is now pleading with
those schools and its committees and
the school heads to get the relevant
documents together and submit for the
release of the term 2 grants.
Out of the $14 million paid out, $6.8
million was paid out to 108 secondary
schools and $7.2 million for 483
primary schools.
Deputy Secretary for Education
Basundra Kumar is now urging the
remaining 307 schools to act swiftly
and submit the pending documents so
they can release their term 2 grants.
We have been moving around all
schools last term and again this week
our monitoring team are in schools
to provide professional guidance to
ensure that schools comply with the
guidelines that we have set out for
them and to also meet the deadline next
week."
The government in its effort to provide

education
accessible,
affordable
and equitable for every Fijian child
continues its patronage in this free
education initiative.
The release of the term 2 grants was
based entirely on the submission of
the Audited Financial Report and the
Annual General Meeting Minutes for
2013 by the School Committees and
the School Heads.
There are 898 schools altogether that
qualify for this free education grants
and so far only 591 schools have
been given their grants as they have
successfully submitted their Audited
Financial Report and AGM minutes
for 2013.
Kumar said the Ministry has given
more than enough time for school
committees and school heads to submit
the audited reports and the minutes.
We are concerned about the daily
operation of the school as we are now
into the second week of the second
term. Accountability is vital when it
comes to finance as we have to justify
the grants paid out to the schools."
School management and school heads
should take proactive measures in
dealing with this issue so that students
education is not affected in any way,
she said.

Australian Mother Stranded In Fiji With Premature Baby

'I was so fearful our baby would die':
Australian mother who's stranded
in Fiji with premature baby relives
'horrendous' moment she gave birth
in back of a taxi
Sydney couple Jayne and Ashley
Wren flew to Fiji last week for a
friend's wedding after getting the
all clear from a doctor
Jayne gave birth to her first child
in the back of a taxi in Nadi, Fiji
'By the time we reached the front
of Nadi Hospital, her head was
out,' she said on Sunday as she
described the traumatic birth
Maddison Jayne Cazna Wren was
born at 33 weeks at 1.7kg
Medical expenses, accommodation
and flights for the baby won't be
covered by travel insurance
An online campaign has been
launched to help cover the $60,000
needed to transport Maddi home
A mother, who is desperately trying
to raise the $60,000 needed to fly
her and her premature daughter
home to Australia, has described the
'horrendous' moment she began giving
birth in the back of a taxi on the streets
of Nadi, Fiji.
'I was so fearful that our baby would
die,' she told the media in Australia
from Fiji, where she is stranded until
they can afford to bring their newborn
home - and their baby is strong enough
to travel.
Jayne and Ashley Wren weren't
expecting to be parents until July, so
they did not obtain travel insurance
that covered the cost of their baby
being born while they were overseas
for a friend's wedding last week.
'The experience of giving birth in the
back of a taxi was horrendous to say
the least... This being my first baby,
being in a foreign country and not
knowing that the labor was progressing
so quickly,' Mrs Wren explained.
Recounting the terrifying moment
she went into labour early, she said:
'By the time we reached the front of
Nadi Hospital, her head was out and I
managed to get from the back seat of
the taxi to a stretcher bed, where I gave
birth on all fours to my baby girl.
'She literally fell out under my dress
on to the mattress of the bed... My
husband had to try and catch her... It all
happened so fast.'
Mrs Wren tried her hardest not to give
into contractions but it was no use.
'Everything inside my head in the back
of that cab said "don't push"... but when
you are in labor, your body just takes
over and it just knows what to do.'
Maddison Jayne Cazna Wren arrived
early at 33 weeks at 1.7kg and was
placed on an incubator at Nadi Hospital.
'The difficulties we are facing at the
moment are that she is too small to fly
weighing at just 1.65kg,' Mrs Wren
said on Sunday.
'She is under the blue ray lights in the
incubator at the moment being treated

The Sydney couple are now stranded in Fiji they as they did not obtain travel
insurance that covered the cost of their baby being born
for jaundice, and we will hopefully be
able to turn those blue lights off soon.
'Then she has to have the temperature
in the humidicrib turned down bit by
bit to see if she can tolerate the outside
air temperature by herself. This will
take another few days. The great news
is that she can breath by herself.'
Recounting the terrifying moment
she went into labour early, she said:
'By the time we reached the front of
Nadi Hospital, her head was out and I
managed to get from the back seat of
the taxi to a stretcher bed, where I gave
birth to my baby girl.
The couple had flown to Fiji after being
granted full permission by doctors in
Sydney.
An online campaign has been launched
by their friend to help bring baby
Maddi home and cover the medical
expenses for the newborn.
Being so far from home, Mrs Wren is
eternally grateful to the staff at Nadi
hospital.
'The treatment for our beautiful
daughter at Nadi Hospital has been
so amazing. We are lucky enough to
have been blessed with an Australian/
Fijian doctor by the name of Sai Misi
Misi. He is extremely knowledgeable
being a pediatrician and has had a lot
of experience with premature babies
having worked in Australia for a
number of years.
'The nursing staff have been so
wonderfully loving and caring, and
they are totally mesmerised by having
a white baby in their care, which is
something they don't get to experience

very often,' she explained.

The family is now waiting not only to
raise enough money to bring Maddi
home but also for her to be strong
enough to fly.
Being so far from home, Mrs Wren is
eternally grateful to the staff at Nadi
hospital.
'To bring Maddi home we need her to be
well enough to fly in an open bassinette
(which is Doctor Sai's preference over
bringing the humidicrib on the plane

with us) and to be able to cope with the

cabin pressure of the plane.'
The couple may be miles from their
friends and family at home but on
Monday Mrs Wren's sister flew in to
Fiji to help out.
And she brought with her some much
needed clothes for baby Maddi.
'She was able to bring with her a couple
of little 0000 Bonds wondersuits and
some little singlets for Maddison to
wear, which are huge on her, but they
were the smallest ones she could find.
'My beautiful friend Angela who
happens to have a five month old baby
and was at the wedding with us gave
us a pink snuggle blanket, some of
her baby's nappies and some wipes
to get us through the first couple of
days until we could buy some things
for her ourselves. Also, the beautiful
staff at the hospital and the Shearaton
Denerau gave us some of their own
baby clothes.'
Mrs Wren's friend Angela Allison is
the person in charge of setting up the
fundraising page, which has so far seen
almost $7,000 raised to bring Maddi home.
However, the current amount is still
a long way off the $60,000 needed to
cover Maddi's medical bills and travel
costs, plus the extra accommodation
and flights for the medic to travel with
them.
Ms Allison said the new parents have
been overwhelmed by support from
friends, family and strangers.
'Now that a few Aussie celebs have
retweeted we are gaining donations
from strangers,' she said.
'Initially it was just friends and family
of Ash and Jay and people who read
about it via the shared Facebook link.
It's so exciting to watch the amount
raise and to think about how much this
is going to mean for them.'

Gunman Dead In Latest US

School Shooting

A gunman killed a student at an Oregon

high school on Tuesday, in a case
of America's latest school shooting
incident.
Large numbers of armed police
scrambled to lock down Reynolds
High School in the north western US
state after reports of shots fired around
8am local time Tuesday.
But about an hour later the Multnomah
County Sheriff's Office said the
situation was under control, and the
gunman dead.
"The situation is stabilized, the shooter
is confirmed deceased," it said in a
statement, adding that "multiple agencies
responded and tactical teams are
currently evacuating students and staff."
Some 60 law enforcement officers and
19 medical personnel descended on
the school, according to local KOIN
television.
Police later confirmed one student had
been killed in the incident.
"A gunman entered the high school this

morning, shot one student," said Scott

Anderson, police chief in Troutdale.
"Unfortunately, that student has died."
The shooting is the latest in a spate of
such incidents over the past few weeks
in the former Wild West region of the
United States.
On May 23, a student with mental
problems, the son of a Hollywood
director, went on a gun rampage at a
college campus in Santa Barbara, north
of Los Angeles, killing six people and
then himself.
On June 5, a gunman killed one person
and injured two others on a college
campus in the north western US city
of Seattle, in what the local mayor
denounced as America's "epidemic of
gun violence."
On Sunday, a couple with possible
links to anti-government militia shot
dead two police officers executionstyle in a Las Vegas pizza restaurant,
before killing another civilian nearby
and then themselves.

Five Dead In Las Vegas Shootings

Two people have shot and killed two
police officers in the US city of Las
Vegas, before killing another person
and then shooting themselves.
The incident began in a pizza cafe at
11:30 (18:30 GMT) on Sunday, when
a man and a woman shot at the two
officers who were having lunch.
They then entered a Walmart shop
nearby and shot one person dead,
before killing themselves.
Police say there are no other suspects
in the shooting.
'Tragic day'
The woman shot her male companion
before turning the gun on herself,
Sheriff Doug Gillespie of the Las
Vegas Metro Police Department said at
a news conference.
There was no obvious motive for the
shootings.
However, eyewitnesses said the

attackers shouted "This is a revolution"

as they entered Cici Pizza and shot the
police officers.
"I think in any case where people are
ambushed and shot is upsetting to
the public," police spokesman Larry
Hadfield told the Associated Press.
"We don't know anything about the
suspects yet and are trying to learn more."
Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval later
said he was devastated by the murders
of the two police officers - Alyn Beck,
42, and Igor Soldo, 32 - and an innocent
bystander.
One of the officers reportedly managed
to return fire in the cafe, and there was
a further exchange of fire between
police and the suspects in Walmart.
"It's a tragic day," Sheriff Gillespie
said.
"We have a community to protect, we
will do it with our heads held high."

Hillary Clinton Says She Will Release Medical Records If She Decides
To Run For President In 2016
Hillary Clinton says she is in good
health and will release her medical
records if she decides to run for US
president in 2016.
Ms Clinton expects she will decide
whether or not she makes another run
for the White House by early next year.
The former US secretary of state also
laughed off suggestions she has brain
damage from a fall 18 months ago.
Ms Clinton, 66, made the comments
on a tour for the launch of her latest
memoirs Hard Choices.
"I will be on the way to making a
decision by the end of the year," she
said in a taped interview with ABC
television.
"Certainly not before then," she added.
"I just want to kind of get through this
year, travel around the country, sign
books, help in the midterm elections
in the fall, and then take a deep breath
and kind of go through my pluses and
minuses about what I will - and will
not - be thinking about as I make the
decision."
A poll released last Sunday morning

Hillary Clinton
showed she has commanding support The new ABC News-Washington Post
among Democrats, making her the poll found that 69 per cent of Democrats

Human Remains Found Inside

Monster Australian Crocodile

Australian police are examining human

remains found in a crocodile to see if
they match the DNA of a missing man.
The 62-year-old man was snatched
from his boat in the Kakadu National
Park, in the Northern Territory.
The 4.7m-long (15.4ft) reptile was one
of two shot by park rangers near the
scene of the attack.
The man's wife, son and daughter-inlaw were reported to have been with
him on the South Alligator River when
he disappeared last Saturday.
"The human remains have been taken
for examination," Sgt Andrew Hocking
said.
"There are a number of statements to
be taken from witnesses and a file will
be prepared for the coroner."
Experts said that it was unusual for a

crocodile to attack during this time of

year when Australia experiences cooler
weather.
Saltwater crocodiles can grow up 7m
long and weigh more than a tonne.
Crocodile numbers have increased
since being declared a protected species
in 1971. They are a common feature of
Australia's tropical north.
The Australian government rejected a
controversial plan to allow crocodile
safari hunting in the Northern Territory
in March.
Australian police shot two crocodiles
dead in January while on a search for a
missing 12-year-old boy attacked by a
crocodile in the Northern Territory.
Another man was killed by a crocodile
in August last year, when he swam in a
river in the north during a birthday party.

Ms Clinton also fared well among the

broader US public, with 67 per cent
of Americans viewing her as a strong
leader, 60 percent saying she is honest
and trustworthy, and 59 per cent saying
she has new ideas for the country's
future.
The poll also found that 59 per cent
of Americans approve of Ms Clinton's
overall job performance as secretary of
state.
That number fell to 37 per cent,
however when respondents were
specifically asked about Ms Clinton's
handling of the attack in Benghazi,
Libya where a US ambassador and
three other Americans were killed.
Ms Clinton addressed the Benghazi
controversy in her book, writing that
she refuses to "exploit this tragedy over
and over as a political tool" nor would
she "minimise the sacrifice of those
who served our country," according to
excerpts released before publication.
She lost to president Barack Obama
in their 2008 battle for the Democratic
presidential nomination.

Hungry Baby, Siblings Found In

Cold, Dark, Dirty Home
A 6-year-old cradled her 8-month-old
sister, watching a computer on which
music played.
Police found them home alone with
two other siblings and no readily
available food or heating in a dark,
dirty house, lit only by the computer
screen's glow.
Their mother, Maraea Manu Gage, had
left them a bottle of milky tea, thick
with sugar and a tea bag.
She had also left them with a toilet
blocked with faeces, a bath full of dirty
clothes and orders to not open the door
to anyone.
Gage, 24, admitted four charges of ill
treatment/neglect of a child under 18.
The charges have a maximum jail term
of 10 years.
She will be sentenced on August 1. The
children are not currently in her care.
A police summary of facts said the
children were hungry and cold - the

8-month-old was filthy and in desperate

need of a nappy change.
No food was in the refrigerator.
Police found a packet of sausages in
the freezer and rummaged up a loaf of
bread and made toast for the children.
Dirty blankets and empty bourbon and
cola cans littered the floor. Two single
beds had no linen.
Gage was charged after police knocked
on her door and discovered her children
on Saturday, May 10.
Officers had been in Gage's street in
Raumanga on an "unrelated matter".
Initially, the children refused to open
the door. One yelled "who is it" before
they screamed for their mother.
Police entered through an unlocked
back door. A neighbour helped tend
and feed the children and change
the 8-month-old after no baby-care
products or baby food could be found

The OJ Simpson Trial: 20 Years On

The OJ Simpson murder trial exposed
many painful truths. None hit harder
than the idea that white and black
people often look at the same facts and
see different realities.
Today, 20 years after the case divided
the United States, few opinions
have changed. Despite two decades
of increasing racial acceptance,
highlighted by the election of the
country's first black president, the saga
still reflects deep-rooted obstacles to a
truly united America.
Most people still believe that Simpson,
the black football legend, killed
his white ex-wife and her friend,
polls show. But for many AfricanAmericans, his likely guilt remains
overwhelmed by a potent mix: the
racism of the lead detective and the
history of black mistreatment by the
justice system.
For these people, Simpson's acquittal is
a powerful rebuke to what they see as
America's racial crimes. Others simply
see a murderer who played the race
card to get away with it. Across the
board, emotions remain vivid.
"We were consumed with it," recalls
Carlos Carter, who at the time was one
of the few black people working in the
trust department of a Pittsburgh bank.
"It represented something bigger than
the case, the battle between good and
evil, the battle between the white man
and the black man. It was at that level."
It was at a different level for Shannon
Spicker, a white woman working her
way through college in Ohio at the
time.
"Most of us didn't understand why it
was racially charged," she says. "We

didn't understand how people could

defend him. We knew he was guilty,
but they defended him because he was
black. It was weird."
On June 12, 1994, Nicole Brown
Simpson and her friend Ronald
Goldman were found knifed to death
outside her Los Angeles condo.
Suspicion quickly focused on Simpson,
who had beaten Nicole in the past and
had no alibi.
Several factors heightened and
complicated the drama:
Simpson had a mixed-race marriage in
a nation that had historically punished
black men who dared to explore
interracial sex. He was the target of
a Los Angeles Police Department
that had a reputation for racism and
corruption.
But Simpson also was a wealthy
Hollywood actor and ad pitchman
with little connection to the black
community, a man who divorced
his black wife for a young blonde
and traveled in Los Angeles' most
privileged white circles. His money

and fame placed him far from the poor,

black men languishing in the criminal
justice system.
"O.J. was in a weird place," says
Ronnie Duncan, a black man who was
then working as a TV sportscaster.
"He lived a lavish life in L.A., sunny
skies, beautiful women, everyone
takes you out to lunch. But one thing
we recognize, you can deny it all you
want, but I can be driving right now
and --"
Duncan makes the sound of a police
siren.
Simpson was charged with double
murder, punishable by the death penalty.
The prosecution had a pile of evidence,
including something relatively new
then: DNA analysis. Prosecutors said
that DNA matched Simpson's blood
to samples from the murder scene.
They said they found blood matching
the victims' in Simpson's Bronco, on a
glove at his property, and on a sock in
his bedroom.
But the prosecution had a big problem:
Lead detective Mark Fuhrman, who
had produced the bloody glove from
Simpson's estate, was a white cop who
used the N-word and then lied about it
on the stand. (He was later convicted
of perjury.)
Defence lawyers suggested Fuhrman
planted the glove out of a racist desire
to frame a black man. They said that
other blood evidence could have been
planted, too, or at least was unreliable
due to sloppy police work.
"That was huge for me," recalls Carter.
"I thought (police) compromised it so
much I can't trust the evidence. The
corruption overshadowed all the other

things that may have been logical to

me."
Cameron Vigil, who is white, saw it
differently.
"Clearly (Fuhrman) was difficult and
lying and trying to obfuscate while he
was up there," recalls Vigil, a 45-yearold strategic retail analyst from North
Carolina. But he separated that from
the evidence.
"Just because he is a not very smart,
racist guy," Vigil says, "I don't know
that means O.J.'s not guilty."
Yet that was the verdict from the
12-person jury. Nine jurors were black,
two white, and one Hispanic.
Duncan literally jumped for joy when
he heard the verdict on television.
"It wasn't so much for O.J. I was
jumping for joy. ... It was the victory
over the United States justice system
that has always had a different
treatment for me and my brother."
The cheers that echoed across black
America that day troubled Spicker.
"These two innocent people were
killed, and you're cheering because
their murderer was just set free," she
said. "It was a shame. It feels racist
against the white victims."
Carter now thinks that Simpson was
guilty, but he makes no apologies for
his feelings at the acquittal 20 years
ago.
"That pride that I felt, I don't take it
back. I don't feel I was hoodwinked.
I was just living in the moment, and
it was a victory for my people," says
Carter, now 42.
"I could have cared less about O.J.,"
he says, "but when I saw him, I saw
myself."

Taliban Claim Deadly Attack On Karachi Airport

The Pakistani Taliban has said they
were behind an assault on the country's
largest airport that killed at least 28
people, including all 10 attackers.
The raid on Jinnah international airport
in Karachi began late on Sunday at a
terminal used for VIPs and cargo.
Security forces battled the militants
for at least six hours, finally gaining
control around dawn. The airport
has now reopened and flights have
resumed.
Karachi has been a target for many
attacks by the Taliban.
A spokesman for the group, Shahidullah
Shahid, said the aim of Monday's assault
had been to hijack aircraft, and was "a
message to the Pakistan government
that we are still alive to react over the
killings of innocent people in bomb
attacks on their villages".
The dead terminal staff were said to
be mostly security guards from the
Airport Security Force (ASF) but also
airline workers. At least 14 people
were wounded.
Analysts say the attack further
undermines Prime Minister Nawaz

Sharif's attempt at initiating peace talks

with the Taliban.
The negotiations have made little
headway since February. Critics have
argued that they could allow the
militants to regroup and gain strength.
The Karachi airport attack comes
against the backdrop of a major split
in the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) - and
threats of retaliation following limited
military operations against foreign
militants in North Waziristan.
Given the violence, it seems clear
that any pretence at a peace process is
now over. Few seriously thought that
recent talks between the government
and militants were getting anywhere
anyway.
The attack is also a reminder, if it were
needed, that despite their divisions, the
Taliban retain the capability to mount
spectacular strikes across Pakistan.
The attackers, wearing explosives
belts, are believed to have entered the
area using fake ID cards, although
some reports suggest they cut through
a barbed wire fence.
They threw grenades and fired at

security guards in the old terminal,

used for cargo and VIP operations.
The Chief Minister of Sindh province,
Qaim Ali Shah, said the attackers "were
well trained" and their plan "very well
thought out".
But they failed to destroy or seize any
aircraft before seven of the attackers
were later shot dead during a gun battle
which lasted until about 04:30.
Another
three
detonated
their
explosives - there were reports of at
least two huge blasts at the airport.
Army officials said there were
indications that some of the gunmen
may have been foreign nationals.
I was with police at the Fokker Gate
where some of the militants initially
entered - and a few hundred metres
from the fighting. We spent five to six
hours at the airport while the militants

were battling.
Witnesses told us the militants came
in a high-roofed van, which dropped
them at the entrance to this terminal
and then quickly left.
We took cover while loud bomb blasts
could be heard. Officials told us it was
suicide bombers detonating their vests.
Later they discovered live suicide
jackets from militants shot dead in the
encounter.
Pakistan has been fighting an Islamist
insurgency for more than a decade,
with the Pakistani Taliban the main
militant group.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif recently
told the BBC he was still hopeful a
peace initiative with the Taliban could
succeed.
But violent clashes have continued and
Karachi has been a frequent target.

Can I Borrow $25?

A man came home from work late,
tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old
son waiting for him at the door.

'Are you asleep, son?' He asked.

SON: 'Daddy, May I ask you a

question?'

'I've been thinking, maybe I was too

hard on you earlier' said the man. 'It's
been a long day and I took out my
aggravation on you. Here's the $25 you
asked for.'

DAD: 'Yeah sure, what it is?' replied

the man.
SON: 'Daddy, how much do you make
an hour?'
DAD: 'That's none of your business.
Why do you ask such a thing?' the man
said angrily.
SON: 'I just want to know. Please tell
me, how much do you make an hour?'
DAD: 'If you must know, I make $50
an hour.'
SON: 'Oh,' the little boy replied, with
his head down.
SON: 'May I please borrow $25?'
The father was furious, 'If the only
reason you asked that is so you can
borrow some money to buy a silly
toy or some other nonsense, then you
march yourself straight to your room
and go to bed. Think about why you
are being so selfish. I don't work hard
every day for such childish frivolities.'
The little boy quietly went to his room
and shut the door.
The man sat down and started to get
even angrier about the little boy's
questions. How dare he ask such
questions only to get some money?
After about an hour or so, the man had
calmed down and started to think:
Maybe there was something he really
needed to buy with that $25.00 and he
really didn't ask for money very often.
The man went to the door of the little
boy's room and opened the door.

'No daddy, I'm awake,' replied the boy.

The little boy sat straight up, smiling.

'Oh, thank you daddy!' he yelled. Then,
reaching under his pillow he pulled out
some crumpled up bills.
The man saw that the boy already had
money and started to get angry again.
The little boy slowly counted out his
money, and then looked up at his father.
'Why do you want more money if
you already have some?' the father
grumbled.
'Because I didn't have enough, but now
I do,' the little boy replied.
'Daddy, I have $50 now. Can I buy an
hour of your time? Please come home
early tomorrow. I would like to have
dinner with you.'
The father was crushed. He put his arms
around his little son, and he begged for
his forgiveness.
It's just a short reminder to all of you
working so hard in life. We should not
let time slip through our fingers without
having spent some time with those who
really matter to us, those close to our
hearts. Do remember to share that $50
worth of your time with someone you
love.
If we die tomorrow, the company that
we are working for could easily replace
us in a matter of hours... But the family
& friends we leave behind will feel the
loss for the rest of their lives.

Chilliwack Cattle Sales To Fire 8 Workers Caught On Tape Abusing

Cows
Chilliwack Cattle Sales, Canada's
largest dairy farm, will fire eight
employees after disturbing undercover
video surfaced showing the workers
physically abusing cows, the company
said late Monday night.
As a company we were not given a
chance to view the footage until it aired
on television, said Jeff Kooyman, who
co-owns the farm with his siblings, in
a statement.
Now that it has aired we are taking
immediate action to terminate all
employees involved as well as take
several steps to ensure that this type of
abuse never happens again.
The undercover video from the nonprofit group Mercy for Animals
Canada shot by a former employee
of the farm shows dairy cows being
whipped and beaten with chains and
canes, as well as punched and kicked.
The recording, which was brought
to the B.C. SPCA last week, also
shows dairy cows suffering from open
wounds and injuries, and being lifted
by their necks with chains and tractors.
Anna Pippus, the director of legal
advocacy with Mercy for Animals,
alleges the company failed to provide
adequate training or respond to the
concerns raised by their undercover
member before the release of the video.
"Our investigator was not provided
with adequate training or supervision.
In addition, he repeatedly brought his
concerns to company owners who
failed to take any corrective action.
The company allowed animal cruelty
to flourish on its watch," said Pippus.

'Obviously we failed,' said Jeff Kooyman, co-owner of B.C.-based Chilliwack

Cattle Sales

calling the video "horrific."
The B.C. SPCA launched an "The guys were going crazy. I couldn't

animals," said Kooyman.
As the biggest dairy farm in Canada,
Chilliwack Cattle Sales supplies brands
such as Saputo and Dairyland.
Kooyman insisted the farm has zero
tolerance for animal abuse and it will
be installing cameras in the barns and
retraining staff.
"Obviously we failed. Our employees
have failed and we are going to be
putting in a new training program to
ensure that this never happens again."
"This is a family farm and this is not
what we're all about ... Maybe I failed
to instill the passion and love that we
have into our employees."
Kooyman said some of the employees
involved in the investigation had been
with the farm a couple of years, while
others were fairly new.
All eight of the employees were
previously suspended when the farm
was alerted to the allegations by the
B.C. SPCA last week.
Lack of standards
Dave Taylor, chairman of the B.C. Dairy
Association, said the SPCA had done an
"excellent job" investigating the allegations,
and the association was "deeply concerned
and saddened" by the alleged abuse.
Moriarty said the video raises the issue
that B.C. does not have standards for
animals raised for food.
"I think the only outcome that we hope
can come from seeing this is not only
getting the people responsible ... but
also to really examine standards of
care applied for farm animals raised for
food in this province."

Delta Airlines Flies Home Vancouver Dog Stranded In Indiana By Pet

Ban
Passenger says nobody told her Delta banned dogs from May to September when she booked

Shirley Naf, a Vancouver woman who

had to leave her dog in Indianapolis
because Delta Airlines wouldn't allow
it on her return flight, has finally been
reunited with her pet.
Shirley Naf flew to Indiana with her dog
Ryder at the beginning of March, but
had to return home without her pet at the
end of May. Delta officials refused to let
the dog travel owing to a pet ban during
the warm-weather months.

After Naf went public with her story,

Delta agreed to fly her back to Indiana
on Friday to collect the Rhodesian
ridgeback-Labrador retriever cross
and finally allowed them to fly back
together on Monday.
"He was jumping up and down. I got
scratches all over me and he's just
barking and carrying on. Yeah, like
he wouldn't leave my side for a long
time," said Naf.

The Delta Airlines website says the

airline does not carry animals during
the summer because it can get too hot
in the hold for them.
But Naf said nobody told her anything
about the policy when she booked.
A Delta spokesperson made the move
to help Naf find a solution after being
contacted by CBC News.
"Once we make contact we'll find a

solution that works best for her. We

certainly apologize for the confusion
and the inconvenience," an email from
the airline said last week.
Now back home, Naf said she may
rethink future travel with her constant
companion.
"I'm going to probably find a different
mode of transportation if the dog is
coming with me."

Top Mountie Says Fallen Officers Made 'Ultimate Sacrifice'

The brother of one of the three New
Brunswick Mounties killed in the
line of duty told a regimental funeral
service Tuesday that the death of
Const. Douglas James Larche has
forever changed his life.
Daniel Larche, a master seaman in the
Royal Canadian Navy, spoke of the
bond he shared with his brother during
his eulogy.
"I stand here before you with an
unbearable sadness, disbelief, rage,
because a great man was taken away
from us far too soon," he told mourners
inside the Moncton Coliseum.
"Never in my worst nightmare did I
envision a stitch in time that I would be
giving his eulogy."
Police and members of the public filled
the hockey arena for the funeral service
for Larche and fellow constables
Fabrice Georges Gevaudan and Dave
Joseph Ross.
Ross's brother-in-law, Adrian Vander
Ploeg, recalled how the RCMP officer
was making dinner but dropped
everything, including leaving the
barbecue lid up and the garage door
open, to be among the first to respond
to a report of a gunman last Wednesday
evening.
"For those closest to Dave, that barbecue
left still open says everything about
who Dave was and his devotion to those
around him," Vander Ploeg said.
Gevaudan was remembered by
Geoffrey McLatchie, his spiritual
adviser, as a doting husband and
stepfather.
"Fabrice lived a heart-centred life, a
life of joy and happiness, a life where
he connected to the community in
which he lived," McLatchie said.
"He was very comfortable in his own
skin and he was his own man."
RCMP pallbearers carried the flagdraped coffins of the slain officers into
the arena.

A beige RCMP Stetson was placed atop

each casket at the front of the service.
Danny, a police dog that served with
Ross, was led inside.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper
acknowledged a "searing grief" that
has enveloped New Brunswick, a
province he said he's proud to call his
ancestral home.
"Together, we struggle for answers,"
Harper said. "We ask what in God's
name happened here and why. We may
never know."
Harper said while the justice system
will establish what happened, one
thing is certain.
"We do not need a verdict to know that
what happened here is an outrage," he
said.
Cpl. Chantal Farrah, who served as
the master of ceremonies, said the
Mounties' deaths are a profound loss.
"Make no mistake, we are also here
to celebrate lives of service that
have contributed to the fabric of this
community, this province and our great
country of Canada," Farrah said.
Before the funeral service began, people
inside the arena stood and applauded

for 45 minutes as police officers from

across Canada and the United States
arrived to take their places.
In front of a stage were three large
portraits of the officers in their dress
uniforms.
There were also three Canadian flags
on the left and right sides of the stage.
Before the funeral service, a procession
of about 2,700 police officers wound
its way through the city with pipers and
drummers leading the mourners.
Four RCMP officers on horseback
followed
the
1.6-kilometre-long
procession, leading three hearses
carrying the dead officers.
Members of the RCMP and municipal
police forces, as well as correctional
officers and U.S. border patrol officers,
were among those who marched to the
Moncton Coliseum, which can hold
about 7,000 people.
Public transit buses picked up officers
in advance of the televised service.
Brenda Jaillet of Oromocto, N.B., said
the shooting deaths have touched her
husband, a retired RCMP officer.
"It's a brotherhood," Jaillet said outside
the coliseum before the service. "What

has affected these three members has

affected him. It could have been him at
any time during his career."
Opposition Leader Tom Mulcair,
Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and
Gov.-Gen. David Johnston were among
the mourners.
So many people were expected that
six other sites in Moncton and four
more outside the city were set up
where mourners can gather. A public
visitation service held Monday drew
hundreds of people.
Gevaudan, Larche and Ross were
gunned down Wednesday evening after
responding to a report of a man with
firearms in a residential neighbourhood
in the northwest area of Moncton.
Two other officers -- constables Eric
Dubois and Darlene Goguen -- were
wounded and released from hospital.
The shootings and the ensuing 30-hour
manhunt for the alleged killer brought
the city of 69,000 to a standstill until
an arrest was made just after midnight
Friday.
Gevaudan, 45, originally of the Paris
suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt, was
remembered in his obituary as an
advocate of women's rights who adored
his wife and "Twin Flame" Angela, and
stepdaughter Emma.
The obituary for Larche, 40, of Saint
John, N.B., says he died while working
as a plainclothes officer who "without
fear or hesitation ran towards danger
to protect his community and family."
He leaves behind his wife Nadine and
three daughters, Alexa, Laura and Mia.
Ross's obituary says the 32-year-old dog
handler died doing what he loved. He is
survived by his wife Rachael and son Austin,
with another child expected in the fall.
Justin Bourque, 24, of Moncton is
facing three charges of first-degree
murder and two counts of attempted
murder. He is scheduled to be in
provincial court July 3.

Richmond Walmart Mall Design $9 Million Of Marijuana, Hashish, And

Heroin Seized In Edmonton Area
A 'Marked Improvement'

The developer behind a planned

Walmart-anchored shopping mall
has made notable improvements
to the design of the $150-million
complex, according to a report that
will be presented Wednesday"The
SmartCentres proposed development
as currently envisioned represents
a marked improvement from the
original development proposal and has
adequately addressed the significant
urban design challenges," said Brian
Guzzi, senior city planner, in a report to
the development permit panel.
Guzzi is recommending the panel
endorse a development permit for
the project, which council approved
rezoning for last fall in a 6-2 vote.
Central at Garden City is planned for
a now-cleared 6.8-hectare (16.8-acre)
site northeast of the Alderbridge Way
and Garden City Road intersection. The
385,328-square-foot mall will boast up
to 50 stores and commercial spaces,
including a Walmart similar in floor
area to the retailer's Queensborough
location.
Guzzi noted SmartCentres has
improved the quality of "architectural
expression" around the perimeter of
the development, particularly with
building facades.

At key corner locations, the mall will

feature "lantern-like" treatments and
more brick cladding. More pedestrianfriendly features have been added,
with minor design changes, more
landscaping, decorative paving and
a public art installation in the central
plaza budgeted at $155,077.
Following a public hearing last fall,
staff were asked to explore a potential
agricultural buffer along Alderbridge
Way that would create a separation
from the Garden City lands across the
street. That buffer will be a landscaped
boulevard that will serve as a "visual
screen," with three separate rows of trees.
One concern raised by the city's
advisory design panel at its March 5
meeting was that the mall was largely
"turning its back on the streets."
Architect Christopher Block told the
panel significant attention has been
given to the mall's appearance from
the street, with mall corners wrapping
around and extending the mall's interior
design.
The site's landscape plan includes
612 trees and 12,182 shrubs. A total
of 172 trees were cleared from the
site, including four tall trees. As
compensation, 10 of the new trees will
be five metres tall.

A search of a semi tractor trailer

and west Edmonton storage facility
turned up nearly $9 million worth of
marijuana, hashish and heroin, marking
one of the largest drug seizures in
western Canada.
Five months ago, officers with the
Alberta Law Enforcement Response
Team (ALERT) Edmonton began a
drug-trafficking investigation that
came to an end on June 4 with the arrest
of three men at the storage facility.
There, officers found 95 kilograms of
marijuana and six kilograms of hashish
worth approximately $150,000. But a
larger quantity of drugs was heading to
the Edmonton International Airport's
commercial operations.
According to the Canada Border
Services Agency (CBSA), ALERT
notified officers that a suspicious tractor
trailer was en route to the CBSA's
facility. The trailer contained goods
from an overseas shipment requiring
custom clearance in Edmonton.
When officers opened the trailer, they
noticed a strong smell of marijuana.
Inside, they located 16 moving boxes
that contained 197 kilograms of
marijuana. A further search revealed
14 kilograms of heroin concealed in a
storage compartment under the trailer.
There was a transfer of some drugs to
another vehicle (in Edmonton)," said
ALERT Insp. Darcy Strang, noting
officers were in the right place at the
right time.
"The semi truck had some of the pot and
hash taken from it, put into a vehicle
and we took off after the vehicle and
the semi truck ended up leaving. We
tracked that to the CBSA site."
Information suggests the shipment
originated in Vancouver and made
a stop in Calgary before arriving in
Edmonton, said Strang. The truck
was also scheduled to stop in Regina
and Winnipeg before reaching its final
destination of Toronto.
Strang isn't sure where exactly the
drugs came from overseas, but believes
criminal organizations in Vancouver
are connected to groups in Edmonton.
"The original crime people that we're
dealing with right now, we believe
they are significantly grounded in
what they do. This will hurt them. This
will be a significant blow to them. It
won't stop them," said Strang, noting
the investigation is ongoing with
colleagues in B.C.
Heroin has been making a comeback in
northern Alberta now that Oxycodone
is harder to use due to its chemical
make up. Last February, ALERT
officers seized 289 grams of the drug
worth $100,000, marking the team's
largest heroin seizure in more than five
years.
Strang said the 14.1 kilograms of

heroin recently seized amounts to

about 700,000 doses prevented from
hitting the street.
"Depending on the users psychological
and physical make up, a single
injection could very well create an
addict or actually kill the user," said
Strang. "After hearing about several
heroin overdoses in Vancouver that
have occurred in the past few weeks,
I know that this seizure is saving lives
and protecting their loved ones."
The total value of the heroin is an
estimated $5.64 million, eclipsing the
previous high of 12 kilograms seized
by CBSA officials at the Calgary airport
in April 2013. The 292 kilograms of
marijuana seized is worth an estimated
$2.9 million, believed to be the largest
seizure in western Canada.
Five people -- Dustin Stone, 24 of
Edmonton, Douglas Dach, 51 of
Edmonton, Samuel Hutsulak, 24 of
Edmonton, Barry Grindrod, 55 of
Chilliwack and Kodie Grindrod, 21 of
Chilliwack -- have been arrested and
face numerous drug charges.
Since ALERT was formed in 2006,
regional teams from across the
province have seized more than $500
million worth of drugs. Nearly 400
municipal police, RCMP and sheriffs
work for ALERT.
Finding out that the men she watched
get arrested by undercover officers at
a west-end storage facility are linked
to one of the largest drug seizures in
western Canada is "kind of scary" for
Deanna Crier.
Accompanied by her 17-year-old
daughter, Crier was inside her storage
unit at the U-Haul location, 10210
218 St., around 9 a.m. last Wednesday
when they overheard a commotion
coming from nearby units.
When she stepped outside to check
things out, Crier saw three plainclothed officers with their guns drawn
running after a man, yelling at him to
stop. They eventually got him to the
ground, placing him under arrest. The
pair also witnessed other men being
handcuffed. Three men are now facing
numerous drug charges after police
located 95 kilograms of marijuana and
six kilograms of hash at the storage
facility. A further 197 kilograms of
marijuana and 14 kilograms of heroin
were located inside a semi-tractor
trailer at the CBSA's commercial
facility at the Edmonton International
Airport. Two more men were placed
under arrest. Police believe the accused
are tied to organized crime.
"I think all of them (police officers)
were undercover, so I knew it was
something serious," said Crier. "It's a
good thing the police are doing their
job and were able to keep that amount
of drugs off the street."

Auckland Pays Homage To Girmitiyas

No sooner had the audience in a
completely full and decorated Skipton
Hall in Auckland settled down for the
programme to begin, than the silence
was shattered by Punjabi dhol. This
rhythmic beat made them stand up
with reverence and respect. This was
on Fiji Girmit Remembrance Day on
18 May, 2014. The dhol heralded the
entry of children and ladies carrying
wreaths. National Anthem of Fiji, India
and New Zealand respectively echoed
and reverberated in a pin drop silent
hall. It was an emotional tsunami,
engulfing all who had gathered to pay
homage and tribute to their Indentured
Girmitiya forebears, and celebrate the
fruits of their sacrifices and vision.
The Chief Guest for the afternoon,
Professor Brij Lal lit the candles, followed
by other elders who later placed the
wreaths in memory of the departed
Girmitiyas. The Master of Ceremonies
for the afternoon, a well-known Jaycee
from Fiji, Nek Mohammed called on the
president of the organisers, Fiji Girmit
Foundation of New Zealand, Pundit
Devakar Prasad. In his welcome speech,
Prasad laid the future vision of Girmit
Foundation, which would not only become
an umbrella body encompassing all IndoFijians in Auckland, but also has vision
of promoting our history, heritage, music,
culture and education, and preserving our
history for coming generations.

lecturing hat on, and posed a question

to the audience: What makes IndoFijians a unique culture of people in

the world? Fortunately, Professor Lal
was the most qualified to answer this.
There are external as well as internal
reasons for their uniqueness. One most
important external reason, is that
In Fiji in contrast to many other places,
indenture was a limited detention, not
a life sentence as after indenture of
five to ten years, people were free to
settle wherever they could find land. In
addition, internal factors were in play:
the formation of cultural institution
like Arya, Sangam, Sanatan etc.,
Indian newspapers, Hindi Radio, Hindi
movies and the type of education that
shaped the culture and knowledge of
our people, formulated and promoted
by our own people, were instrumental
in making us what we are today.
Professor Lal had come, armed with
Hindi ki Pothis -1 to six and other books
we used in schools in 60s. He created
hilarious moments when reciting
some of poems and verses many were
familiar with. An interesting topic
was old Bollywood movies that most
elder people could relate to.. One other
subject that he covered in his speech
earlier on, was that contrary to belief
that all indentured labourers were of
lower caste and poor impoverished
people, many came from middle and
upper class.
The afternoons programme ended
on a high note with birah and hudda
and tassa (big drums) with traditional
songs, followed by a sumptuous dinner
provided by the Foundation. This
occasion provided a good opportunity
for all to network, re-establish old
contacts, photo session. We departed
with the hope to meet in Fiji Girmit
Remembrance Day 2015.
Planning for 2015 function has already
begun by President, Pundit Devakar
Prasad, who would bring his four
decades of planning abilities and
programming, and hopes to make this
one a memorable historical event.

Punishment Or Positive
Discipline?
Continued From Last Week
For a minor episode
Try ignoring, by walking into
another room or just carrying on
with your own tasks
Use calming techniques to lower
your own stress levels deep
breathing, relaxing your muscles,
positive talk inside your head: I
will keep calm.
If ignoring hasnt worked, some
children can be jollied along out
of an episode. Say something like,
Time to stop now Ill count to
10, then give plenty of praise and
cuddles if the tantrum stops.
In the supermarket, it is sometimes
best to just pick up your child
and go outside to cut down your
embarrassment.
For a really major tantrum, different
tactics are needed
Speak calmly, saying things like
Im here, I wont let you hurt
yourself.
Hold your child tightly, preferably
making eye contact.
Sometimes you just have to
weather the storm till your child
calms down.
Time out can help if you find
it impossible to stay calm. Time
out involves putting your child
somewhere safe but boring (for
example a playpen, pushchair
or the bottom step) for a couple
of minutes. It should never be
forced in anger and is not really
understood by under 3s. It may
work best for parents to take it
themselves!
Top Tips for Cutting Down Tantrums
Aim for some happy, relaxed times
every day reading a story, visiting
the park, playing a game.
Show a good example by remaining
calm when times are stressful. This
encourages your toddler to do the
same.
Cut down negatives constantly
saying No will add to a toddlers
frustration. Instead, use phrases
like later, or after lunch.
Keep aware of new stresses (potty
training, starting nursery) that may
need more sympathy.
Respect your childs feelings.
Feeling understood will reduce
your childs need for tantrums.
Try saying, I know that makes
you mad or That must have made
you feel sad. Your child will see
that their feelings matter and can
gradually learn to put them into
words, saying Im angry instead
of acting it out.
Use positive parenting plenty of
praise and attention for behaviour
you do want, trying to ignore as

much as possible behaviour you

dont.
Avoid harsh discipline shouting
and punishments only make
tantrums worse.
Use humour to defuse tricky
situations silly songs, laughter,
making a game of tidying toys
can all work brilliantly! A hug or a
tickle at the right moment can also
change a childs mood.
Most children do grow out of the
need for tantrums when they have
more language and understanding.
But the way you deal with them
in the toddler years is important.
If they are handled harshly,
with responses like yelling and
smacking, or if you constantly
ignore their feelings and need for
comfort, they may well become
worse and carry on for longer.
The Magic Words
When kids forget their Ps and Qs....
Softly softly
I dont force my kids to say please
and thank you. They do spontaneously
most of the time but if they forget I think
its wrong to get them to say something
they dont mean. Instead I repeat what
Id rather they say after them, so water
please. Itll sink in eventually. Kerry,
Mum to John, 5, and Adie, 3
Excuse me?
I tried reminding my kids constantly
but just repeating it all the time didnt
seem to be working plus it was
making me mad! Now, until they say
please, I act like I havent heard the
request and if Im expecting a thank
you I just stand and wait for one until
they remember what Im there for!
Lisa, Mum to two kids, aged 8 and 4
Make it fun
We have two ways to encourage the
kids to mind their manners when it
seems like theyre forgetting to say
please and thank you. At first we had
a reward chart just for this, but it was
difficult to remember to add the stars
if the kids remembered their manners
when we were out and about. So then
we invented P & Q spotting, and the
person (could be Mum and Dad, too!)
whod said the most (genuine!) pleases
and thank yous by the end of the day
won some sweets! It works a treat!

Desk Bound Jobs, Changed Life

Style Causes Knee Arthritis

While many call 40 as the old age of

youth, doctors say this could well mark
the beginning of ailments typically
associated with elderly.
In a Knowledge Exchange Programme
organised by Cygnus Orthocare
Hospital, its Chief Orthopedic Surgeon
and Medical Director, Dr Pankaj Bajaj
said, ''Due to desk bound jobs and
changed life style, food habits, knee
arthritis is on rise among those in their
to 40s, in addition to the elderly.''
''We were facing problems in knee
transplant earlier as the artificial knees
designed by most of the companies of US
were for US and European population.
But for the first time Freedom Knee
company has designed the artificial
knees for Asian people keeping their
body structure in mind,'' he said.
It is better in fitting for Asians
especially Indians, he claimed.

Asked about the life span of an artificial

knee transplant, he said, ''Average age
of a knee transplant in a patient is
approximately 20 years. However, it
can increase, depending on patient's
physical activity and body type.''
Regular exercise, outdoor activities
combined with good nutritious diets
were the key to avoid knee arthritis.
''Vitamin D, which we get from sun,
can also make people more resistant to
such diseases,'' he added.
Talking about the cost angle Mr Bajaj
said a single knee transplant costs
nearly 2 lakh.
Dr David H Gibson, a well known
orthopedic from US said, artificial
knees designed for European and US
natives are generally broader in shape.
These ones exclusively made for
Asians are less broad as per the body
structure of people living India.

Lose Weight And Liven Up Your

Sex Life

It is time to run, jog, join the gym, hit

the park or just begin walking to tuck in
your tummy as losing even a moderate
amount of weight can help improve
your sex life.
"Excess weight is related to poor
circulation and dwindling testosterone,
both of which can contribute to erectile
dysfunction," researchers said in a new
study.
Obese men who lost just five to
10 percent of their body weight
experienced improved desire as

a result, said the study which

appeared in the Journal of Sexual
Medicine.
Losing weight can help regulate one's
hormones and also help improve
circulation across the body - including
to the genitals - which means improved
sensation and greater arousal.
It can also help people move more
easily and feel more comfortable
during sex, the study noted, adding that
shedding extra weight can also have
emotional benefits as well.

New Study Confirms Link

Between Sleep Apnea And
Diabetes

A new study of more than 8,500

Canadian patients has demonstrated
a link between obstructive sleep
apnea (OSA) and the development of
diabetes.
It confirms earlier evidence of such a
relationship from smaller studies with
shorter follow-up periods.
"Our study, with a larger sample size and
a median follow-up of 67 months was
able to address some of the limitations
of earlier studies on the connection
between OSA and diabetes," lead
author Tetyana Kendzerska, MD, PhD,
of the University of Toronto said.
"We found that among patients with
OSA, the initial severity of the disease
predicted the subsequent risk for
incident diabetes," Kendzerska said.
The study included 8,678 adults with
suspected OSA without diabetes at
baseline who underwent a diagnostic
sleep study between 1994 and 2010
and were followed through May 2011
using provincial health administrative
data to examine the occurrence of
diabetes.
Sleep apnea severity was assessed
with the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI),

which indicates severity based on the

number of apneas (complete cessation
of airflow) and hypopneas (partial
cessation of airflow) per hour of sleep.
Patients were classified as not having
OSA, or having mild, moderate or
severe OSA.
During follow-up, 1,017 (11.7 percent)
patients developed diabetes.
In analyses adjusting for known risk
factors for diabetes, including age, sex,
body mass index, neck circumference,
smoking,
income
status
and
comorbidities at baseline, patients with
an AHI greater than 30 had a 30 percent
higher risk of developing diabetes than
those with an AHI less than 5.
Patients with mild or moderate OSA
had a 23 percent increased risk of
developing diabetes.
Other risk factors for diabetes
included AHI during rapid eye
movement sleep and measures of
the physiologic consequences of
OSA, including oxygen desaturation,
sleep deprivation and activation of
the sympathetic nervous system, as
indicated by a higher mean heart rate
during sleep.

Regularly Consuming Or Skipping Breakfast Does Not Affect Weight

Loss

A new research led by the University

of Alabama at Birmingham shows that,
when comparing regularly consuming
with regularly skipping breakfast,
weight loss is not influenced.
Past breakfast research, including an
examination of 92 studies about the
proposed effect of breakfast on obesity
also performed at UAB, has found that,
while an association exists between
breakfast and weight management,
the question of whether eating versus
skipping breakfast causes differences

in weight has not been answered by

research, until now.
The new study examined the impact
of a recommendation to eat or skip
breakfast, and the impact of switching
breakfast eating habits for the study,
on weight loss in adults trying to
independently lose weight.
Study lead author Emily Dhurandhar,
Ph.D., assistant professor in the
Department of Health Behavior, said
that it was important to test the common
recommendation to eat breakfast to

ensure this public health message was

effective and not misleading about
what will and will not help with their
weight loss efforts.
"Previous studies have mostly
demonstrated correlation, but not
necessarily causation," Dhurandhar
said.
"In contrast, we used a large, randomized
controlled trial to examine whether or
not breakfast recommendations have
a causative effect on weight loss,
with weight change as our primary

outcome," she said.

This multisite, 16-week trial enrolled
309 otherwise healthy overweight
and obese adults, 20-65 years old.
Experimental groups were told to eat
or skip breakfast. The control group,
consisting of breakfast eaters and
skippers, was simply provided healthy
nutrition information that did not
mention breakfast.
Dhurandhar said that there was
no identifiable effect of treatment
assignment on weight loss.

Why The Doctor Asks For A Urine Sample

It's probably safe to say that no one really
likes giving a urine sample. But the fact
is that few tests can match the routine
urine analysis for telling your doctor
about what's going on inside your body.
The bladder can hold almost 2 cups of
urine for two to five hours comfortably,
and excretes about 2 quarts of waste
products and additional water daily.
And just as you use a dipstick to check
your car's engine oil, doctors rely on a
specially treated "dipstick," a plastic
stick that has segments imbedded with
different chemical indicators on it, to
test urine. Unusual amounts of certain
substances in your urine can indicate
conditions ranging from minor urinary
tract infections to diabetes and other
more serious conditions.

One portion of the dipstick, for

instance, measures the specific gravity
(a measure of the amount of substances
dissolved in the urine). The higher the
specific gravity, the more concentrated
the urine is. Using a numerical scale,
the dipstick shows whether you're
drinking enough fluids and how well
your kidneys are filtering wastes from
your body. Very concentrated urine
suggests you are probably not drinking
enough fluids, making it harder for
your body to flush wastes. Urine is
normally darker - more concentrated
- in the morning, because your body's
been storing wastes all night.
The dipstick registers the presence
of a variety of chemicals that the
kidneys filter, such as glucose (sugar)

or minerals. Healthy people generally

don't excrete sugar in their urine. Its
presence may mean that you have
diabetes or another condition that
prevents your body from efficiently
converting blood sugar into energy.
The urine test also can indicate
infections by measuring nitrites and
leukocytes. Bacteria produce an
enzyme that converts nitrates, which
are normally present in urine to nitrites.
Leukocytes are the white blood cells
that fight infection. The presence of
either indicates that your body may
be fighting an infection in the bladder
or somewhere else along the urinary
tract. They also can indicate something
even more serious, such as a tumor,
but further tests are needed to confirm

these findings.
The dipstick gauges protein and pH levels.
Urine shouldn't contain much, if any,
protein, although some perfectly normal
people do excrete tiny amounts. Urine
pH, or acidity, normally ranges between
4.5 and 8, with most people's urine falling
between 5.5 and 6.5. Significantly high
protein or pH levels can suggest kidney or
other renal dysfunction.
Ketones can be detected by dipsticks.
They are substances produced when fat
is used by the body for energy. They are
eliminated from the body in the urine.
Large amounts of urinary ketones
indicate a diet low in carbohydrates,
starvation, or, in a person with
diabetes, a dangerous condition known
as diabetic ketoacidosis.

Red Wine, Dark Chocolates May

Boost Memory Too

For red wine lovers, some good news is

around the bar. An anti-aging substance
found in red wine and dark chocolates
may enhance memory too.
"The findings suggest that regular,
high-level intake of resveratrol - a
compound found in red wine and dark
chocolate - may convey protective
effects on cognitive functions, a
hypothesis that now needs to be
evaluated in large-scale clinical trials,"
Veronica Witte a neuroscientist at the
Charite-Universitatsmedizin Berlin in
Germany, was quoted as saying.
In a study involving overweight adults,
those who took resveratrol supplements
for six months had better short term
recall than their counterparts who took
a placebo.
The people who took the supplement

also had more connections among

brain areas involved in memory.
Aside from red wine and dark
chocolate, sources of resveratrol
include red grapes, peanuts, blueberries
and Japanese knotweed.
In the new study, Witte and her
colleagues tested 46 participants who
were overweight but otherwise healthy.
Half of the volunteers were randomly
assigned to take 200 milligrams of
resveratrol daily for six months.
Those who received resveratrol
supplements remembered more words
on a list that they had seen 30 minutes
previously than those who received the
placebo.
"More research is needed to confirm
resveratrol's brain-boosting effects,"
researchers added.

Aries

The planetary positions in your

charts this week indicate that your
professional matters, no matter how
urgent, will have to be put on the
back-burner, as your personal life is
going to demand more priority. Some
wild ups and downs are expected in
your personal life. swim with the tide,
instead of trying to resist it. Use all
your wisdom and persuasive talents to
sort things out, but if you cant, then the
best thing would be to keep quiet and
bide your time. Better times are around
the corner. Be extra careful of not going
on harping on the past, think about the
future and how to make it smooth and
harmonious. Fortunately, financially
this week appears to have something
good in store for you. Money may pour
in from unexpected sources.

Taurus

This week you will be totally

preoccupied with your routine
responsibilities, which will hardly leave
you any time for relaxation or pursuing
your personal hobbies. In fact, life may
become so hectic that it could affect
your health, so make sure you use
your energy judiciously and conserve
it whenever possible. Try taking small
breaks in the morning and evening
hours. If you have a creative bent of
mind, this week is quite auspicious
for starting the writing project that
you have been putting off. Those of
you looking out for a suitable match
for marriage could very likely meet
someone interesting. However, you
may not be able to take any meaningful
decision in the matter.

Gemini

This week is favourable for making

progress in your career, and at the same
time you will be rewarded for your past
hard work. If you have been hunting for
another job with more financial benefits,
it may come this week. However, your
present financial situation may be far
from pleasant; you may even be in
dire need of funds to meet some urgent
expenses, mainly because some of the
debts that you were hoping would get
repaid now shall be getting delayed. But
dont worry, as better times are around
the corner. You may be a bit concerned
about the young and the elderly
members of the family. The youngsters
may demand quality time, while the
elderly may need careful tending. It
may be tough to balance everything, but
try staying positive.

Cancer

The stars this week send ahead a mixed

bag of fortunes for you. On some
fronts you will taste success, while on
others you may have to face failure.
Particularly, decision-making will be
somewhat tricky, and you may not know
how to proceed in certain professional
matters. However, this does not mean
that the decisions you take now will

not be correct just that you will find

it difficult to decide. But, if you stay
positive, and do stick to a decision it
could very well turn out to be the right
one. To stay positive, though, you will
have to stay objective, and analyse
your past mistakes, understand them
thoroughly and resolve not to repeat
them in the future.

Leo

Although this looks set to be a great

week for your professional life. Do
not become too impatient for the fruits
of your labour. Your efficiency levels
will shoot up, you will make rapid
strides at your work-place, you will
even successfully launch new products
and services, and as a result your
company will greatly benefit. Justly,
you shall receive rewards in terms of
appreciation from the top management
of your company, but if you are
expecting immediate material rewards,
you may be disappointed. They will
take some time to come. Writers and
painters, however, are likely to receive
monetary benefits. On the personal
front, you may not look eye to eye with
some of your family members, but it is
a temporary phase, and will soon pass.

Virgo

Your professional matters will take

precedence over everything else this
week. Although you may be distracted
by myriad problems, including some
on the personal front, you will manage
to focus on your work and accomplish
a great deal. This happens because
you will work in an organised manner
and as per the priorities you have set.
But before signing any important
documents, you should think twice.
Take great care in litigation-related
matters. Also, in the week you may
experience some ups and downs in
your business, and may have to pay
close attention to joint finances. Be
very careful about not spending money
on unnecessary luxuries. Projects
which are underway will progress at
a steady pace, but may be below your
expectations.

Libra

Brace up for some changes in your

personal as well as your professional
spheres. On the work front, your
company may be undertaking some
new and challenging projects, which
is bound to have a bearing on your
routine. You will definitely have to
work harder than before but then
you can always say no, when things
get too much. Your rapport with your
superiors also may undergo a change
whether it will be positive or negative
will depend to a large extent on
your own perception so relax. You
should avoid getting into arguments,
especially with elders. If you wish to
express your feelings, while dealing
with your superiors and parents, it
would be better to do so in writing, as

it will have more impact than verbal

communication. On the romantic front,
you are likely to feel very passionate,
whether you are married or not.

Scorpio

You will try to hard-sell your ideas

to your superiors this week. But, they
may not be too happy to see that the
company is not progressing at the
projected pace. Do not tax your brain
too much. Dont keep your mind
occupied with unproductive thoughts,
but try to stay focused on your main
duties. Your personal affairs will
demand a lot of attention, and at times
you may have to compromise your
professional duties to cope up with
them. Be very alert and careful, while
dealing with your life-partner, who
may tend to be a bit touchy now.

Sagittarius

This week try to handle your business

relationships with great caution, as the
situation at your workplace may be a
bit delicate. Before embarking on any
new projects, work on smoothening
out the wrinkles; build your rapport
with your peers and superiors. Even on
the personal front, relationship matters
will be at the forefront. Intimate
personal relationships shall hold a lot
of importance for you, and you shall be
willing to go out of your way to keep
them happy and in good humour. Your
beloved too shall also reciprocate your
feelings. This may, however, leave
you with hardly any time for yourself.
But then, that will not matter much as
long as other aspects of life are flowing
smoothly.

Capricorn

The planetary configurations this

week indicate that your professional
life shall dominate your personal life.
You may also be called upon to take
important decisions at work. Besides,
you will have to work really fast, as the
workload will be tremendous. Good
thing is that you will try your best to not
compromise on the quality even as you
dish out loads and loads of work. This

Friday June 13, 2014

means you will be working overtime

to accomplish all the tasks within the
allotted time-frames. Despite such
heavy pressure, you should not depend
on anyone else, as they may not take
your work too seriously, and if they
become lax for any reason, you are the
one who is going to suffer. There may
be some unexpected expenses.

Aquarius

This is going to be a very hectic week,

both on the personal as well as the
professional fronts. Meetings and
conferences will keep you on your toes,
while family get-togethers in which
relatives from far-flung areas may
come down to participate will keep
you preoccupied on the personal front.
You shall work very hard this week,
and seeing your commitment to your
work, your bosses may assign greater
responsibilities to you. Take it as a
sign that their trust in you is growing.
However, remember that you shall
have to be physically and mentally fit
to be able to take on more workload,
and therefore it may be imperative
to start exercising to increase your
stamina. This is a favourable week
for businessmen to make fundamental
changes.

Pisces

This week you are going to be very

pragmatic for a change. Emotions
which usually deeply affect you will
not be able to sway you. You will plan
out your tasks very meticulously. If
you work in an administrative capacity,
you will be stuck with routine chores,
but shall be strict nevertheless. On the
financial front, there is good news for
you, as money is likely to pour in from
unexpected sources. Relax as much as
you can this week. With the stars not
favouring you much, even if you put in
your 100% efforts, the results will not
be commensurate; in fact, the results
will not even be equal to half the efforts
you have invested. So the best you can
do this week is to meditate and wait for
more favourable times.

Randeep Paired With Sarah Allen In Deepa Mehta's Next

Acclaimed filmmaker Deepa Mehta,
who has worked with actors as diverse
as Aamir Khan and John Abraham, is
now getting ready to direct Randeep
Hooda. She has paired him with
Canadian actress Sarah Allen in a yetuntitled project.
Sarah, who has acted in over two dozen
films and television serials, is best
known for her vampire's role in TV
show "Being Human".
Talking about the project, Mehta said:
"I am doing a film with Randeep
Hooda later this summer. Sarah Allen,
a fabulous and beautiful actor with
huge acting chops is playing the lead
opposite Randeep, whose character
leads the charge. It's an edgy role that
I'm positive he will do justice to."
The eclectic cast of the film would be
from the US, Canada and India.
"Some are from here in Canada, some
from Los Angeles, some from New
York city and some from Mumbai. It's
a male-centric film, a lot to do with
guy bonding and the peripheral part
women play in that process," said the
filmmaker.

AR

While Mychael Danna is doing the

music for the film, actor Kulbushan
Kharbanda is also in the cast. Gulshan
Grover too plays a prominent part.
"I worked with Gulshan in 'Earth'
and he blew me away," said the IndoCanadian filmmaker, who said her
movie would keep in mind the change
of government in India.
"Whatever transpires in India, and
I'm talking about the recent landslide
victory of Narendra Modi, invariably
effects the diaspora. The climate here
in Canada amongst the NRIs is one of
euphoria.
"They feel Modi means the end of
corruption; jobs for all...Values are
shifting globally and the Canadian
diaspora is no different."
She also said the Indian diaspora is
doing well in Canada.
"They are young, passionate and
very talented. Broad and lighthearted filmmakers are thriving here.
Entrepreneur Ajay Virmani's son Vinay
Virmani Ahas become quite a star
among the desi community. It's pretty
heartening," she added.

Big B Wonders If 'Yudh' Will Be

Appreciated

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan is set to

make his debut on a fiction TV show
with "Yudh". With the rising number of
channels and shows, he wonders if his
effort will be appreciated.
When he first forayed on the small
screen with "Kaun Banega Crorepati",
he marked a revolution for the medium.
And after decades of working in the
entertainment industry, he still wonders
if he will be able to strike a chord with
TV viewers.
`As you go through the 800-odd TV
channels in the country, you often
wonder whether with the amount of
content that keeps floating around,
your own effort would ever be seen or
even appreciated.

"Television has become three times

more remunerative than films here in
the country. The turnovers say so, as do
many of the viewers,` he posted on his
official blog srbachchan.tumblr.com
Monday.
While many faces from the TV world
are trying to find space in films, Big B
says he is "doing exactly the opposite
and hoping and wishing that efforts
made to execute something different,
shall be acknowledged`.
He believes that it is a `tough world...
and only the tough survive`.
Directed by Anurag Kashyap, the show,
to be aired on Sony Entertainment
Television, also features Sarika and
Kay Kay Menon.

Shilpa Shinde Back In 'Chidiya

Ghar'

Actress Shilpa Shinde, who left TV

show "Chidiya Ghar" mid-way due
to other commitments, is back on the
comedy show. She will replace actress
Shubhangi Atre who was roped in to
play the former's role when she left.
Shilpa was seen as Koyal in the show,
which runs around a patriarchal family.
It comes on Sab TV.
Talking about her comeback, Shilpa
said: "I do not want to be typecast in a
single role. I played Koyal in 'Chidiya
Ghar' for one year. That time, my
father's health was also not well and
one year in a serial is considered a long
time.
"So, I took up the role in 'Lapataganj'.
Now, I am back (in 'Chidiya Ghar')
and hope people will give the same

response what I had received last time."

Earlier, Shilpa acted in shows like
"Maayka" and "Kabhi Aaye Na Judai".

Shahid And Priyanka To Pair Up

Akki's Way To Pay Back: SelfDefense Classes For Women

Bollywood's action titan Akshay

Kumar, who has started a school along
with Aditya Thackeray to train women
in self-defence, says the initiative is
not for personal gain, but to give back
to the society.
"We are here to give something to the
society. There is no monetary gain from
it. I am doing it because I have earned
a lot in life due to martial arts and it is
my way to give back (to the society,"
the actor, who is trained in martial arts
and has a black belt in taekwondo, told
reporters at a press conference.
Akshay has also promised active
participation in the training sessions.
"Whenever I will get time and if I'm
in Mumbai, I would teach martial arts
to them (the women). I am starting the
whole thing July 29," said the actor,

who is set to go away on a holiday

soon, to return in time for the training
sessions.
Akshay's latest film "Holiday: A
Soldier Is Never Off Duty" released
last Friday, and he will soon start
shooting for "Singh Is Bling" with
Kareena Kapoor.

If the latest buzz is to be believed, Shahid

Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra will be
pairing up on the big screen once again.
The two, who were rumoured to be
seeing each other at one point of
time, will apparently star together in
Abhishek Chaubey's next film.
Says a source, `Abhishek recently
had a falling out with his mentor,
Vishal Bharadwaj, and he is all set to
start work on his next project. He has
already signed Shahid Kapoor for it
and if things go as per plan, he will
soon have Priyanka Chopra on board.`

The source adds that the film is titled

Udta Punjab. `Produced by Phantom
Films, the film is based in Punjab
and this is why Abhishek has been
travelling to Punjab quite often. Right
now, the pre-production work is on
and once everything gets finalised, an
official announcement will be made,`
says this source.
Priyanka-Shahid's previous outings are
Kaminey and Teri Meri Kahaani, and
this might be their third film together.
Both actors and Abhishek were
unavailable for comment.

Id Love To Be Called An Actor,

Not Comedian - Kiku Sharda

He makes TV viewers burst with

laughter with his drag act as Palak of
Comedy Nights With Kapil, but Kiku
Sharda says hed rather be called an
actor than a comedian.
Kiku, whos dancing away to glory for
the the seventh season of the celebrity
dance show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa these
days, is also participating in the
competition in his character Palak.
I have been working in the industry
for the past 11 years. I would loved to
be called an actor, and not comedian,
said Kiku.
He is pleased that his character Palak
has achieved a unique identity, and
more so as the makers of Jhalak
want Palak to rock the dance floor with
her amusing dance movements. The
show wanted Palak to participate. My
character has got its own individuality
after the Comedy Nights. People
recognise me as Palak. Im quite happy
that Palak has attained an identity,
Kiku said.
Jhalak went on air on Colors on
June 7 with filmmaker Karan Johar,
choreographer-director Remo DSouza
and Madhuri Dixit on the judges panel.
Kiku, who hasnt learnt dancing, but
loves dancing, is practicing with his
choreographer Kruti to give neck-toneck competition to other celebrity
contestants. Hes also learning

different dance forms. I have never

learnt dancing, but I love dancing.
Palak has its three to four signature
moves. I cannot showcase just those
on the Jhalak stage since its a
hardcore dance show. The tasks cannot
be taken lightly. All the contestants
are judged technically. I learn and
practice different dance forms with my
choreographer Kruti. Ill be practicing
the Latin form of dance, which I have
never done in my life, he said.
Kiku said as the show proceeds, he
might get out of Palaks get-up and
perform as himself. I may not do the

Jennifer Lopez Lets Her Ex Keep

Gifts

Singer Jennifer Lopez has reportedly

told her ex beau and choreographer
Casper Smart to keep all the gifts she
bought for him.
The "On the Floor" hitmaker recently
split from the 27-year-old after two and
half years of dating and the "generous"
singer wanted him to have some lasting
mementos from their relationship.
"He gets to keep all the gifts that Jennifer
bought him, including the customised

truck that she gave him for his 25th

birthday. Jennifer has always been very
generous and Casper has bags of things
to move out," said a source.
Over the weekend, Smart was seen
moving his belongings out of the
44-year-old star's house and is said to
be devastated about the split.
"He is upset about the split. He really
wanted to stay with Jennifer. He loves
her and her kids," said a source.

said a source.
The wedding is reportedly set for

Lipstick Shades For Medium Skin

Tones
Knowing the best lipstick shades for
medium skin tones can help you decide
on a lipstick color when you are faced
with an abundance of options. The right
color choices will both complement
your complexion and brighten your
smile.
Determine Your Undertone
Always consider your skin's undertone
when choosing a color. Besides the
basic light, medium and dark skin tones,
you can also classify a complexion as
cool or warm depending on whether
there is a yellow or pink hue to the
skin. Shades that complement your
undertone will leave you looking fresh
and radiant. On the other hand, shades
that clash with your coloring can leave
you looking pale or washed out.
Cool Undertones
Women with medium skin tones and
cool undertones may have a very faint
pink tint to their cheeks or may even
have pale cheeks.
Warm Undertones
Those with medium skin tones with
warm undertones may have a yellow,
beige, peach or gold hue to their skin.
One easy way to determine your
undertone is by looking at the veins
on the inside of your wrist. If the veins

look blue, you're likely a 'cool'. If the

veins appear greenish, you're likely a
'warm'.
Hair and Eye Color
Hair and eye color should also be taken
into consideration when selecting
lipstick shades for your skin tone. If
your natural hair is brown and has gold,
copper or auburn highlights, you'll
likely look best in warm colors. The
same goes for women with dark eyes
or hazel-brown eyes. If your hair is ash
blonde, grey, cool brown (without red
tones) or black, you'll look best in cool
shades. Those with blue or green eyes
tend to look best in cool tones as well.
Best Colors for Cool Complexions
Women with a cool/medium skin tone
can brighten their complexions by
choosing lipstick shades with a bluebased pigment. Avoid neutral colors
to avoid looking washed out. Medium
skin tones with a cool undertone should
try the following shades:
Red
Magenta
Berry
Mauve
Pinks
Rose
Coffee brown

Best Foods For Lowering Cholesterol

Keeping control of your cholesterol is
an important part of staying healthy.
High cholesterol is an epidemic
brought on by poor eating habits and
stress. High cholesterol can cause fatty
deposits to accumulate on arteries
and blood vessels. This restricts the
movement of blood, causing high blood
pressure. This can lead to coronary
heart disease, which can be a precursor
to heart attacks or strokes.
High cholesterol can be caused by a
variety of factors. Your age, gender,
and genetics play an important role
in your risk of high cholesterol. Your
weight, diet, activity level, and stress
levels also play a huge roll on your
risks. Thankfully these factors are
controllable through lifestyle change.
Not all cholesterol is created equal.
HDL, or high density lipoprotein, is
known as good cholesterol. This is
very beneficial cholesterol to have
in high levels, as it carries the fat
through the blood and prevents it
from depositing on you arteries. Bad
cholesterol is known as LDL or low
density lipoprotein. You should also
consider your triglyceride levels. Total
cholesterol levels should ideally be
between 100-200 mg/dL for an adult.
Diet plays an important part in your
cholesterol levels. It can both raise and
lower your numbers. Here are 12 LDL
cholesterol lowering foods for you to
enjoy.
1. Whole Eggs

Eggs are a controversial food in relation

to high cholesterol. Some small studies
have found that eating egg yolks can
raise cholesterol levels. However, there
have been a few very large studies that
have shown that eating egg yolks can
lower high cholesterol by raising your
good cholesterol. This seems to only
be applicable when you have a good
diet to begin with. Many people forget
that raising HDL cholesterol can lower
your risk of heart disease and balance
your cholesterol levels. Eating a whole
egg each day can do wonders for your
blood work.

2. Walnuts

It may seem counterintuitive, but eating

more fats can actually lower your
cholesterol levels. Monounsaturated
fats help lower LDL cholesterol.
They are also high in omega-3 fatty
acids, which can lower the level of
triglycerides in your body. This lowers
the fat in your blood stream and can
prevent plaque buildup in your arteries.
Studies have shown that eating just a
handful of walnuts every day can lower
your LDL cholesterol levels by 10%.
3. Lentils

Lentils make a wonderful addition to

any diet. They are high in foliate, which
acts by protecting your artery walls
from damage. Lentils are also high in
magnesium. Magnesium causes your
blood vessels to relax, staving off heart
disease and heart attacks. Enjoy lentils
on top of salads or cooked into soups.
Lentils are a protein source, especially
for vegetarians. Buying lentils in bulk
make this a heart healthy and wallet
friendly purchase.
4. Beans

The whole legume family is a

cholesterol friendly treat. Beans are
packed full of soluble fiber, which
has been shown to be correlated with
lowered cholesterol levels. Studies are
ongoing on the other health benefits of
beans. The proteins are also thought to
contribute to lowered LDL cholesterol.

Eating 1.5 cups of beans 4 times a

week can reduce your LDL cholesterol
levels by 5-15% and cut your risk of
heart disease too. Enjoy your beans in
chili, in hummus, or as a delicious side
dish.
5. Trout

This fatty fish has great nutrition and

health benefits. Trout is very high in
omega-3 fatty acids, which act by
lowering your levels of triglycerides.
This can lower your cholesterol and
prevent heart disease. Other fish high
in omega-3 fatty acids include salmon,
tuna, and sardines. Make eating fish
part of your weekly menu to enjoy
the health benefits of lowering your
cholesterol. Trout is an excellent main
course dish, but its also great topping
a fresh salad.
6. Garlic

Garlic is a delicious flavoring and a

very widely used supplement. Some
studies have found that consuming
garlic can lower LDL cholesterol,
while keeping your HDL cholesterol
at good levels. The studies found that
the high the amount of garlic you ate,
the more health benefits you could
gain from it. While some studies have
found a relationship with garlic and
the lowering of cholesterol, other
have found no correlation. Garlic is a
delicious addition to healthy food, so
you can still lower your cholesterol by
making healthy foods tastier by using
this flavoring.
7. Apples
There is a saying that an apple a day
can keep the doctor away, and this is
true for your cholesterol. A recent study
found that eating just one apple a day
for a month lowered LDL cholesterol
by 40%. Apples contain a ton of soluble

fiber, which can clear the body from

excess fats. This healthy fruit is also
high in the antioxidant polyphenols.
The study looked at supplementing the
polyphenols that you would consume in
an apple a day, and the results showed a
marked decrease in cholesterol. Apples
had the highest decrease, but it showed
that polyphenols could successfully be
supplemented.

8. Psyllium
Psyllium fiber is a well known additive
used to enrich foods. It is popular as a
mild laxative. The soluble fibers help
to gel and rid your body of unhealthy
material. Recently, psyllium has been
used to lower cholesterol. It acts
through two ways- one by reducing
the absorption of cholesterol, and two
by removing cholesterol through your
bile. A good amount of psyllium fiber
to eat a day is 7-12 grams. Build up
your tolerance by supplementing small
amounts and increasing over time.
Too much at once can cause intestinal
distress.
9. Asparagus

This delicious fresh vegetable is a

popular side dish because it pairs well
with any protein. Asparagus is not
only a favorite food; it can also work
to lower your cholesterol. It is packed
with insoluble fiber, giving it its stringy
texture. Steaming asparagus can soften
these fibers. When you then digest the
asparagus, the fiber binds the bile acids
to the cholesterol, reducing the quantity
in your blood stream. Enjoy asparagus
for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!

2015 Hyundai Genesis V-6 RWD

Forgetting our obsession with power, this is likely the best Genesis.
Michigan roads have never been so
useful. You see, we recently sampled
Hyundais new Genesis sedan in
Arizona, and while we discovered its
pretty damn good, the pavement on our
drive route was merely cracked. (Oh,
but to dream) Weve now driven the
car near Detroit, and we can comment
on how its Lotus-tuned suspension
handles moonscapes such as those that
serve as the Motor Citys highways
and byways. We also spent more time
with the V-6 car, which is the expected
volume model and focus of this report.
Subtract Two Cylinders and Some
Weight, and Add Lotus
Lotus founder Colin Chapman once
said, I hate enormous luxury sedans.
Please hand me the keys to a Seven
and a rag to wipe the bug cheese from
my face. This was later pared to the
famous simplify and add lightness, a
credo to which the Genesis V-6 adheres

reasonably well given that, well, its an

enormous luxury sedan. To wit: Its
403 pounds lighter than the V-8 car,
according to Hyundais scales. We
havent yet weighed any Genesis, so
we cant verify the claim, but the V-6
version certainly feels much lighter
from behind the wheel.
Our Michigan experience didnt change
our impressions of the Genesis cabin
its still a nice, quiet place to spend
timeand we can add that the neverending minefield of spiteful potholes
exposed no squeaks or rattles. Broken
roads also didnt affect our satisfaction
with Hyundais second-gen Blue Link
telematics and infotainment system, or

certainly a lot of money, but consider
that its $475 cheaper than a base,

you how austere such a 5-series is,
but like a Wookiee or the Loch Ness

That makes the six-cylinder Genesis

a screaming deal not only compared

with the German competition but
also against the V-8 model. The
V-6 Genesis is sprightlier than the
muscled-up V-8 version, and with the
exception of adaptive dampers, they
can be equipped identically. Roll in the
fact that all-wheel drive is available
exclusively with the V-6, and it looks
like the Genesis to get.

Anti-FIFA Mood Deepens In Brazil

Yes to the World Cup, not to FIFA that sums up the frosty relationship
between footballs world governing
body and Brazil. But it hasnt dampened
Brazilians enthusiasm for the mega
event which kicked off on Thursday.
World Cup kicks off, the president of
the football world governing body,
Joseph Blatter, cut a lonely figure as
he opened the FIFA annual congress
in Sao Paulo on June 10. Brazilian
celebrities including President Dilma
Rousseff as well as the governor of the
state of Sao Paulo and the mayor of the
megacity stayed away from the event.
Blatters solo performance in Sao Paulo
speaks volumes about the mood in the
country as it prepares to host the giant
football event. A majority of Brazilians
are angry at FIFA, the exploding costs
of the mega tournament and its few
trickle-down benefits for citizens.
Many in South America's largest
country are speaking out using a
mixture of sarcasm and protest.
FIFA sends a bill worth thousands
"We dont want to have anything to
do with FIFA. Our festival is a 100
percent Brazilian," Ricardo Ferreira, a
trader from Rio de Janeiro says. Since
1978, Ferreira has been organizing the
street festival "Alzirao" during each
World Cup. This year, however, FIFA
sent him a bill worth around 10,000
dollars for broadcasting rights for the
games on a public screen.
It was only after the mayor of Rio,
Eduardo Paes, intervened that FIFA

withdrew its demand. What especially

irks Ferreira is that the famous fandriven spectacle in Rio served as
the model for official FIFAs public
viewing fan festivals that have become
the norm since the 2006 World Cup
held in Germany.
"FIFA didnt pay us anything for the use
of our intellectual property," Ferreira
says. "The organization obviously has a
weakness for voluntary involvement,"
the trader jokes.
Lots of pride, not enough money
The feeling is echoed by the waiters
serving drinks at the legendary
Maracana Stadium in Rio. "Of course
its great to say on your resum that
youve once worked during a World
Cup," Valdo Cardoso says. "But
considering the scale of the event,
FIFA pays really little." Cardoso has
already decided that once his job at
the Maracana is done, he will demand
more pay from his next employer.
Relations between Brazil and FIFA
nosedived in March 2012 when FIFA
General Secretary Jerome Valcke said,
in light of the delays and glitches in the
building of the stadiums, that Brazil
need "a kick up the backside." It was
only after a public apology by Valcke
that Brazil agreed to speak with the
FIFA official again.
FIFAs reputation in tatters?
But FIFAs high expectations about
the quality of stadiums in Brazil have
now become the butt of further jokes
in Brazil after the organization was

recently
"When it comes to the issue of
corruption, the FIFA appears to violate
the same quality standards that it
demands from others. And it comes
closer to the way politics is done here,"
an article in Brazilian daily "Folha de
Sao Paulo" said.
Since the revelations of corruption
allegations against FIFA, no protestor
has been calling for schools and
hospitals of "FIFA quality," the article
added. The mark of quality ascribed to
FIFA is simply a "mistake," it said.
FIFAs worsening reputation was also
the reason that the 54 UEFA members
at the congress in Sao Paulo questioned
the re-election of President Blatter next
year.
Cultural row in Salvador
And, FIFAs plunging popularity in
Brazil took another hit recently after a
row in Salvador, a city in the northeast
that is to host World Cup games. FIFA
had barred street vendors of "acaraj,"
an iconic black-eyed pea fritter split
and stuffed with caramelized onions
and shrimp, from selling the snack
near World Cup venues. The governing
body said the hot oil used in the fritter
could cause injuries to visitors.
Its not the first clash of its kind between
FIFA and Brazils local traditions in the
run-up to the World Cup. But in this
particular case, there were allegations
that FIFA was bowing to corporate
sponsors such as McDonalds. It was
only after strong protests and the

intervention of the state government

that FIFA finally allowed the sale of
acaraj, which was declared a cultural
heritage of Brazil in 2005.
'Were in a mood to party'
Despite the litany of problems, strikes
and protests, Brazilian and international
football fans aren't in mood to let that
ruin their anticipation of the giant
event. In recent days, Rios cars have
been increasingly sporting yellow and
green flags and Brazil stickers.
And, football fever is already spreading
in front of Rios Maracan stadium.
A fan from Argentina, Brazils arch
rival, recently disguised himself as
Maradona and used his act to collect
money to finance his stay in Brazil for
the World Cup.
Even Ricardo Ferreira from the
"Alzirao" fan festival is hopeful. "We
dont have the World Cup blues. Were
in a mood to party and well be rooting
for the Brazilian team," Ferreira says.
He adds that people should demand
political change during the upcoming
presidential elections in October and
not during the World Cup.
Ferreira expects around 30,000 fans for
his festival on Thursday. The streets in
Alzirao have already been decorated
and makeshift stages and speakers
installed. Ferreira cant help taking
another swipe at FIFA. "Just about
20,000 visitors are expected to turn up
for the official FIFA fan festival at the
Copacabana," he points out. So, its
already 1-0 for Brazil.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter launched

a scathing attack on those he said were
"plotting to destroy" world soccer's
governing body, and branded some of
the criticism of the Qatar World Cup
award for 2022 as racist.
Blatter was addressing delegates of the
African and Asian confederations at
their extraordinary congresses ahead
of FIFA's annual congress.
The African congress, which declared
its "continued support" for Blatter,
who intends to run for a fifth term
as president next year, also passed a
resolution condemning what it called
the British media's racist attack on its
officials.
Blatter's comment came in the wake of
a series of fresh allegations made by
Britain's last Sunday Times newspaper
about the award of the Cup to Qatar
and rumblings from sponsors who are
unhappy with the current trouble FIFA
is facing.
Blatter, without defining who "they"
were, told Asian delegates "they want
to destroy us; they don't want to destroy
football, but they want to destroy the

institution (FIFA)".
He got a standing ovation when he told
the delegates to "show unity in FIFA".
Earlier Blatter spoke to delegates at the
African Congress and without naming
names described attacks on the Qatar
World Cup as "racist".
The Sunday Times over the last two
weeks has published a series of articles
expanding on allegations that the former
president of the Asian Confederation,
Mohamed Bin Hammam, had used
money from secret slush funds to help
win votes and support for the Qatari
World Cup bid.
Qatar denies the allegations and says it
was not connected to Bin Hammam.
Qatar was awarded the World Cup
by the FIFA executive committee in
December 2010, beating rival bids
from the United States, Australia,
Japan and South Korea.
However, the Sunday Times made
new allegations that Bin Hammam
specifically targeted African soccer
officials and Issa Hayatou, the
president of the African Confederation,
to help create a groundswell of opinion

in favour of the Qatari bid.

Blatter said: "Once again there is a sort
of storm against FIFA relating to the
Qatar World Cup. Sadly there's a great
deal of discrimination and racism and
this hurts me."
Hayatou, approached by Reuters in the
lobby of Sao Paulo's Grand Hyatt Hotel
after the congress, said: "I am very
content with what President Blatter
said. We support him, and I was very
happy with what he told the delegates."
Sponsors want FIFA to resolve Qatar
scandal
In the wake of the problems facing
FIFA, five of FIFA's six major sponsors
have expressed their displeasure over
the situation.
Sportswear maker Adidas, which has
been associated with FIFA since the
1950s, said in a statement on Sunday:
"The negative tenor of the public
debate around FIFA at the moment is
neither good for football nor for FIFA

and its partners."

The latest developments coincided with
Michael Garcia, the head of FIFA's
investigatory chamber of their Ethics
Committee, concluding his report on
alleged corruption surrounding FIFA
officials, which has taken him two
years to complete.
He will submit the report to German
judge Hans-Joachim Eckert, the head
of the Ethics Committee's adjudicatory
chamber, in around six weeks.
If he finds corruption, soccer officials
say Qatar could be stripped of the Cup.
