Building on Experience, Fun, and Skills

whether it is your first year or
you are looking forward to your best year!

Pathway One:

Designed for the student that is developing their interest in dance. The
goals are primarily recreational in nature, and present an opportunity for
children to develop coordination, a sense of self-esteem, and a place to
experience the joy of dancing. For Preschool and Kindergarten, we offer a
Ballet/Tap Combination Class. For older beginning students, we offer J azz,
Kick, Hip Hop, Tap & Ballet. Students in this Pathway select 45 minutes to
an hour of dancing for their class each week.

Pathway Two:
Designed for the student that is interested in a progressive program. Classes
are available in ballet, pointe, jazz, tap, lyrical, modern, hip hop, conditioning,
kick, leaps and turns. Students selecting pathway two will choose anywhere
from 2 - 8 hours of dance a week. Levels I-VI are available.

Additional optional programs, once students are pursuing our progressive
path:
Performance Company is an auditioned group of 6 teams comprised of
students entering 5
th
-12
th
grades. Dancers are divided by age and skill after
an audition camp, held J une 24-27
th
. Dancers have reached level three, or
above in their studies, and are looking to dance a minimum of 4 hours per
week. They receive training in ballet and jazz, with the option of expanding
their studies into other styles. They perform throughout the community, attend
dance conventions and competitions, take trips together, and participate in
master classes with guest instructors. Also part of our performance company
is the Hip Hop Team, (7
th
grades and above).

Our Conservatory program is geared to the serious advanced dancer enter-
ing 9
th
-12
th
grades who has chosen dance as their art. They love classical
ballet, pointe, and modern. These dancers are on pointe, enjoy rehearsing full
length classical ballets, and sharing in the development of artistic works. Dancers may be interested in pursuing
dance at the college or professional level.

Pathway Three:

In the musical theatre program, youth will explore the fundamentals
of stage movement, pantomime, character & scene develop-
ment, and improvisation. This is an acting class intended to
introduce participants to the world of drama and musical thea-
tre. Activities that deal with diction, clarity, intonation, and
projection will be introduced, as well as exploratory exercises
reflecting on action, reaction, focus and building relationships
with your fellow actors on stage. Opportunities for performance
will be provided.

Approach to Dance

Pathway Four:
At River Valley Dance Academy, we believe in the intrinsic value which
dance provides when one begins to explore the creative processes within
themselves. As the world of dance can sometimes be competitive and
inaccessible to persons who may be challenged in physical or developmental
domains, we have made it a priority to offer classes to children who have
not yet had the opportunity to dance. If your child or someone you know
has a developmental disability, or is physically challenged, please help us to
invite them to our studio.

How many students in a class? 10 for preschool, 12 for ballet, 12-14 for other classes.
f
Are parents allowed to watch? Yes! There are large viewing windows and video monitors.

Is there a waiting room? Yes! Along with coffee, seats and a sibling play area.

Is there a recital? Each dancer will have the opportunity to perform in a recital with their class. In
addition to our traditional recital, our youngest children perform in a Walk through a Storybook which
lasts one hour. Classical Ballet Students perform in a classical ballet.

How many costumes are required? One per class taken, except for Performance Company (3)

What is the cost for a costume? Preschool-2
nd
grade: $58. 3
rd
-6
th
grade: $65. 7
th
-12
th
grade: $72.

Are there multiple class discounts? Yes (please see tuition chart). Because tuition is calculated by
family rather than by individual, households with multiple dancers receive additional benefit. 4th hour
of instruction is free. In addition, each individual dancer pays for a maximum of 7 hours/week.

What if I need to drop a class? Written notice is required. If received prior to the 15th of the month,
you will not be charged for the following tuition increment. If received after the 15th of the month, you
will be billed for the following tuition increment. No refunds are provided.

How do I pay for tuition? You can choose between making 10 equal payments or a single annual
payment. If you choose to make ten equal payments, your first payment will be made upon reg-
istration. Payments 2-10 will be due the first of each month (Sept-May). If payment is not received
by the 7th day of the month, a $10 late fee will be charged. If you choose to pay annually, you must
pay upon registration and you will receive a one month discount (see tuition chart). Please do not pay
annually if you may only dance part of the year as there are no refunds. The program year includes 32
classes plus the dress rehearsal for the recital.

Are there Trophies? All primary dancers receive medals. Trophies are earned as dancers 1
st
grade and
beyond progress through the levels. Exams are offered each spring.

What do students wear? Preschool-Kindergarten: pink tights and a black or pink leotard, pink ballet
slippers, and black tap ties. Ballet students-1
st
grade and up: black leotards, pink tights, and pink ballet
slippers. Hair must be in a bun. Tap, J azz, Kick, and Modern students: dancewear appropriate for their
discipline - No T-shirts or sweats. Hair must be pulled back. Hip Hop and Musical Theatre students
should wear clothing they can move in (i.e. sweats, work out wear). Come to the open house in Au-
gust to purchase the appropriate shoes for the classes you select.

Are there opportunities to perform beyond the recital? Once dancers are in first grade, there are
additional opportunities to perform in the community. These opportunities increase with age and ex-
perience.

What is Performance Company? Students entering 5th grade and up may audition for Performance
Company, once they have reached Level III. The Company travels to perform both in and out of the
community. They have appeared in Disney World, aboard a cruise ship, at Timberwolves, Lynx, Vikings
Games, Orchestra Hall, the Mall of America, nursing homes, churches, high school dance team exhibi-
tions, and outdoor festivals. They have also traveled to NYC and to dance conventions to take class.

Do the students compete? Once students earn a spot on the performance company, it is their choice
if they compete in two spring competitions. This is an optional activity provided for those who choose
to participate in that experience.
