UTRA architecture
UTRAN !short for "Uned Node Bs, and Radio Network Controllers (RNC).

T"e RNC
#ro$ides control functionalities for one or %ore Node Bs. A Node B and an RNC can &e t"e

se#arated, t"ere is a lo'ical interface &etween t"e% known as t"e )u&. T"e RNC and its
corres#ondin' Node Bs are called t"e Radio Network Su&syste% (RNS). T"ere can &e %ore
t"an one RNS #resent in a UTRAN.
There are four interfaces connecting the UTRA internally or e#ternally to other functional
entities$ %u, Uu, %ub and %ur.
&'(
The %u interface is an e#ternal interface that connects the R) to
the )ore et*ork !)+. The Uu is also e#ternal, connecting the ode , *ith the User
-.uipment !U-+. The %ub is an internal interface connecting the R) *ith the ode ,. And at
last there is the %ur interface *hich is an internal interface most of the time, but can,
e#ceptionally be an e#ternal interface too for some net*ork architectures. The %ur connects t*o
R)s *ith each other.
