Fiam Ovidio coffee table set, available in
September 2014 and retailing at Proof Living
Wow. Its our furniture and storage issue. And these are two
of my most favourite topics in the worldbesides food.
That said, Im not going to trail off into a tirade of brands
or materials. How you furnish is simply your call. It dictates
your personality, your needs and very plainly, how you live.
Many times, I have veered towards big designer brands but
lately, I fnd mixing and matching high style and chic budget
buys can offer more gratifcation. Its not just wallet-friendly,
but these two very varying styles can bring a whole new
perspective in being creative.
So, before I say too much, heres what we have in store for
you in the June issue!
Go to page 18 (Month by Month) and fnd out how to use
typography to dress up your home. Theres a wealth of
ideas that will surprise you on how fun and funky word play
can be! As for furniture, go window shopping on page 34
and feast your eyes on the latest Milan Fair 2014 roll-outs.
The good news is: they are available in Singapore! Theres
also a storage guide (page 20, Bare Basics) and a DIY
feature (page 42, Practical) on how to keep your jewellery
in order.
Well, furnishing your home isnt always the easiest thing in
the world, when you have a world of selections. But with
our June 2014 issue, Im sure youll be on the right track!
Have a fruitful June!

As a cool tone, blue is calming and yet
can command, a regal presence. This is
especially prominent in this boho chic
home. The blue painted walls stand
strong as a gorgeous feature statement,
and the visual contrast is made apparent
with white frame mouldings. Adding to
that is the tasteful selection of furnishings
with a classic style.

hidden revolution
European market leader in sanitary technology,
Geberit Group, is celebrating 50 years of its cutting-
edge concealed cisterns. 1964 saw the birth of this
innovation, which sparked the change from sanitary
units to convenience bathrooms. The concept is to
install the cistern behind the wall rather than in front of
it. Fast forward to 2014 and the brand is still on top of
its game. In honour of their anniversary year, Geberit
introduces a new concealed model, the AquaClean
Sela, with three different construction heights. Not
only are they able to accommodate both front and top
actuation, the plates are signifcantly smaller to make
way for creative freedom.

is debuting on level three this June. Exclusive only

Lush Flagship store
Spanning 12,000 square feet of retail space, the
two-storey showroom is brimming with furniture for
the entire home. Lush was opened in 2006, by CEO
Steve Lim from Luxur Home. While furnishing his
own apartment, he found that there was a lack of
affordably priced pieces; and those that were, were
not accessible here. Therefore, he saw the demand
and opened Lush, and the rest, we say, is history.

Spanning the entire length of a living room, this

concrete ideas
Cement screed fooring is a mainstay of the industrial-style home.
For that added punch, check out other creative applications
I
f you love industrial-style interiors,
chances are youll love the look of
concrete surfaces. The raw grey tones
add a rustic charm that fts perfectly with
the design themes laidback eclectic
styling. That said, concrete surfaces,
known commonly as cement screed
fnish, are extremely versatile and can
suit other interior design styles just as
beautifully. Cement screed fnish need not
be confned to fooring. It can be applied
in many other areas of the interior, and
can contribute tremendously to the
overall look.
Many interior design frms are seeing
rising numbers in clients asking for
cement screed fnishes. The consensus
among interior designers we have spoken
to however, is that homeowners need to
be aware of what cement screed fnish
entails. In general, cement screed fnish
ages gracefully. Dont be bothered by
hairline cracks or changes in colouring
because thats part of the beauty. Whats
interesting about it is that the older it is,
the nicer it looks, says Raymond Seow,
Design Director of Free Space Intent.
Ceiling
Aside from fooring, the ceiling is another
popular option for cement screed fnish.
Unlike a plain, painted ceiling, irregular
tones on the cement screed surface
inject visual texture and even drama to
an interior. Draw attention to beams with
cement screed for depth and dimension.
Pair with exposed piping and trunking
for an outstanding look thats suited for
spaces like the kitchen and living room.

Walls
Because of its porous nature, cement
screed fnish is best for spaces with little
moisture and activity. When used for the
wall, get creative with groove lines. These
create defnition or bring the illusion of height
and width to the space. For a polished
aesthetic, add stainless steel inlays.
Countertop
When properly fnished and coloured, a
concrete countertop can mimic the look of
natural stone. The common misconception
though is that it is a hardy material. Like
natural stones such as marble, its porous
and is susceptible to stains. Be sure to coat
the surface with epoxy coating and sealant
once a year for protection.

Furniture
You might love the
look of cement screed
countertops, but take
note that its porous
nature might make it
a hassle to maintain
when used in the
kitchen. Having second
thoughts about concrete
countertops? Introduce a
display ledge in cement
screed elsewhere in the
home. That way, you can
enjoy its raw beauty and
have peace of mind. How
about a custom designed
coffee table? Opt for a
smooth fnish. Coat it
with sealant, lacquer or
epoxy for comfort.
Bathroom
More homes are seen with bathrooms
fnished with concrete walls, foor and
ceiling. Some interior designers caution
against this, as the materials porous nature
could cause water seepage issues after a
few years. If you live in a high-rise building,
this could affect the unit on the foor below.
To curb the problem, interior designers
recommend reapplying a fresh coat of
epoxy at least once every two years.

Not for the
accident prone
A mishap like dropping an
object on the surface might
cause cracks. Note that
cement screed surfaces
tend to crack, peel or chip
over time. Patching the
imperfections is likely to
disrupt the patterns and
tones of the surface.
Colour chameleon
Its colour will change over
time due to exposure to heat,
sun or moisture. Expect this
as part of its aging process.
Low maintenance
Simply wipe it down twice
a week with a wet cloth. Do
not use harsh chemicals. You
will also need to reapply the
coating regularly to safeguard
the surface.

The right
size
The size of a ceiling fan
is represented by its blade span.
This is measured according to the length
of the fan blades from one end to the
other. Blade spans typically range from
30 to 54 inches. To determine which
size you need, measure the room
where the ceiling fan will be installed so
that you will get a fan that is an appropriate
size for the room.
Mounting
system
For safety and optimum
comfort, ceiling fans
should be installed in
the middle of the room,
at least seven feet
above the foor and 18
inches from the walls
or doors. These are the
different types of mount
used for ceiling fans:
Standard mounts come with a three- to
fve-inch-long down rod, which is the metal
rod that extends the fan down from the
ceiling bracket.
Extended mounts, as its name suggests,
are used to hang the ceiling fan at a desired
height from the foor for high ceilings.
Flush mounts hold the fan directly against
the ceiling, which is ideal for rooms that
have low ceilings.
Sloped mounts are used for angled or
vaulted ceilings.
Firstly, they need to know the
height of their ceiling and
whether it is a concrete or false
ceiling. A false ceiling will require
a different type of installation
method and if it is not done
properly, it might result in noise or
shaking. It is advisable to x the
fan at least six inches away from
the nearest down lights, if any, in
order to avoid casting shadows.
Typically, for the living room of
HDB ats or condominiums, we
will usually recommend a fan size
of 48 to 54 inches. For bedrooms
and dining areas, we will usually
recommend 46 to 48 inches.
They can use Magiclean
static dusters to clean the fan
blades and body. Once in a
while, they can also use a
damp cloth to wipe the blades
and follow through with a dry
cloth. Low maintenance is
required for ceiling fans. They
do not require special cleaning
methods or lotion.

Suggested blade span (inches)
30 38
Fans of this size range are most often used in
very small rooms such as bathrooms, walk-in
closets, kitchens and hallways.
39 48
Guest bedrooms, childrens rooms, and home
ofces usually use fans of this size range.
49 54
These blade spans are the most popular size
and commonly used in most spaces like living
rooms and master bedrooms.
55 and more
These fans are used for large rooms,
particularly if the ceiling is high as well.
However, the larger the ceiling fan, the
more the air gets spread out, reducing the
amount of breeze you get. You could consider
installing two smaller fans instead.

focus
Lubricate If youve just purchased your ceiling
fan, run it for 24 hours to ensure the lubricant
applied during the manufacturing is evenly distributed.
Polish With wooden blades, apply a light coat
of furniture polish to it for additional protection and
to enhance its natural beauty. If there are small scratches,
try rubbing a light application of shoe polish.
Built-in light A two-in-one fan and light model
will help to save money and ceiling space but it will
be best to get one that uses compact fuorescent lamps or
energy-saving LEDs. This will render less bulb changes.
Distance For safety reasons, make sure
there is a minimum ceiling height of 2.2-metre
to 2.8-metre distance from where your fan hangs. Also,
ensure that the fan blades are at least 2.4 metres above the
ground for optimum air circulation.
Dirty blades One of the most common
reasons that a fan wobbles or shakes is dirty
blades. Remember to clean it once you spot dirt and
dust accumulating on the blades.
Cleaning Clean the fan blades with a
soft cloth and warm soapy water. If there are
stubborn stains or dirt, mild grease cleaner should do
the trick. Do turn off the main switch before cleaning to
avoid getting electrocuted.
Drying After cleaning, always dry the blades
with a towel and allow it to air dry before
operating the fan.
Tighten blots If your fan wobbles, check
the bolts that hold the fan blades into the
centre fan motor. These blades can become loose once
in a while so tighten it to stop the wobbling.
Choose the right size Smaller rooms
should use a 36-inch to 42-inch in diameter
ceiling fan. A 52-inch unit will fare well in a larger room.
Get a quality brand Dont stinge on
getting a reputed brand fan. Paying more will
ensure quality and a more silent fan too!

Noting that the homeowners have

Is the existing layout perfect for you?
One way to demarcate space clearly is to
create a strong border with a bold frame

For a bright interior with subtle depth and

Even for a small space like the bedroom,
dont be afraid to create zones by
employing outstanding colours.
Strengthen the concept by painting the
ceiling in the zone colours too.

consistency in the living room, with similar white brick tiles

The understated form of Amba, Kludis new bathroom mixer tap line,
will bring a sophisticated sheen to your bath suites
fancy ow
Sleek contours aside, the Amba mixer
tap is seriously an attractive addition to
any bathroom. It has been aptly dubbed
the gentle beauty and it is not hard to
see why. As one of the leading German
experts for bathroom and kitchen mixers,
Kludi maintains its competitive position
with Ambas high quality integral design.
With part of the mixer body acting as
the handle, the fxture looks seamless
on the whole. It gets better when you
use it; your hands natural movement
aligns with the mixer and you only need
to tap it backwards slightly to activate
the water fow.
Therefore, the water fow and
temperature level are easy to adjust
with the handles customary pinpoint
accuracy. Whats more, this eco-friendly

mixer is equipped with a fve-litre jet
controller to preserve water supply.
The jet controller contains an invisible
s-pointer function that allows you to
control the angle of fow directly on the
faucet aerator itself.
Versatility is another highlight since
it comes in a variety of sizes and
heights to pair with either wall-mounted
washbasins or freestanding bowls.
This means the fxtures are ready for all
types of installation and able to adapt to
individual requirements.
Unsurprisingly, it was awarded the
iF Product Design Award 2013 and
German Design Award 2014 for its
impressive qualities. The full range
is now available in major bathroom
retailers and trade outlets.

A tour of Swiss furniture maker de
Sedes factory is almost like watching
a grandfather introducing his brood
of grandchildren. The grandfather
here is Peter Denz, de Sedes
product development consultant. His
enthusiasm for the brand is palpable
by the fact that he has retired and
returned as a consultant. It was even
more so during the tour by the hands-
on approach he takes while explaining
the production process.
Handcrafted quality
Peter handles the tools and
materials with precision and
knows each piece inside out
not surprisingly so, since he
himself was involved in building
the different leather pieces as a
craftsman for many years. Indeed
this is what de Sede prides itself
upon, that each piece of furniture
that goes out from the factory is a
handcrafted masterpiece. Young
people come in as apprentices and
work themselves up to become
master craftsman; many of the
people working in the factory have
been here for years, highly skilled
and deeply familiar with the de
Sede production process.
Orders are made as they are
received, with at least a months
wait since each piece is assembled
by hand. This attention to detail
results in a truly tailor-made
experience, for those who want a
personalised furniture piece.
Bespoke tradition
Dimensions, upholstery material, colour,
and ergonomics can all be adjusted,
whether it is to suit ones body type or to
ft the interior space. When customised
according to the clients requirements
however, the wait can stretch longer.
Explaining this, Peter says, For pieces
that have precise measurements, we
need to look at the details again when
changing the height or depth and ensure
that the modifed piece has the same
quality.
This bespoke service extends even to
those who want to create a new, unique
piece that they can call their own. With
computer-aided design technology and
de Sedes in-house team of product
developers, architects and interior
designers can produce furniture pieces
that not only match their design vision,
but also boast the handcrafted quality of
de Sede.
For pieces
that have precise
measurements, we
need to look at
the details again
when changing the
height or depth
and ensure that the
modied piece has
the same quality.

Latest creations
On its own, de Sede is introducing its 2014 New
Collection comprising four models: DS-88, DS-
110, DS-279, and DS-904. At frst glance, the DS-
110 stands out for its resemblance to automotive
construction, with extended armrests echoing the
sweeping wings of a Bugatti. Yet, it was when
Christian Malkemper, de Sedes Sales Director,
demonstrated the discrete function of the DS-904
that this typical elegant-looking sofa suddenly
shone. A simple manoeuvre pivots the seat
surface through 90 degrees, while the backrest
and armrests can be independently swivelled to
transform the sofa into a variety of new positions.
Discrete functionality
Discrete functions clearly seem to be
characteristic of de Sede, with a number of
their iconic pieces having a discrete function
woven into the design. Fans of this Swiss
furniture maker will call to mind the DS-164
by Hugo de Ruiter. Its moveable backrest
glides smoothly along the sofas perimeter to
provide support in any desired position. Its
so subtle that its easy to miss. Once noticed
however, its hard to forget. It comes as no
surprise then that The Dolder Grand, one of
the most luxurious hotels and a prominent
landmark in Zurich, has furnished its suite
rooms with this very piece.

Commitment to quality
An inside look into de Sede is certainly
not complete without an introduction to
leather. After all, de Sede traces its roots
to a saddlers workshop and has been
creating premium-quality leather furniture
for an international market since 1965.
A tour of Gmelichleder, the tannery
that provides the Swiss company its
leather ensued.
Hans Fischer, Gmelichleders Sales
Manager, explains the high cost for
premium leather the kind of leather with
an even colour tone and zero blemishes,
We need cattle that have been reared
in good conditions, in places like
Switzerland, Germany and Scandinavia.
But even then, few pass the quality
checks. It could be insect bite marks,
scratches, and these are things that
are very hard for us or even the farmers
to control.
These premium leather pieces are just
the type of leather that de Sede uses.
While the process is a tedious one,
both the tannery and de Sede make
no compromises on it. There are at
least three rounds of inspections at the
tannery before the leather is collected.
Back at the factory, the Swiss furniture
maker has its craftsmen checking and
approving the leather again. As Monika
Walser, CEO of de Sede, aptly puts,
Our manufacturing process is our asset.
Quality is our focus.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary next year, de
Sede has come a long way. It now counts some
of the worlds most elite destinations, including
embassies, banks, and international organisations,
as its clients. We round up fve of the most iconic
pieces that de Sede has been renowned for.
DS-51
First manufactured in 1971, the DS-51 swivel
armchair is a de Sede classic. The seat and back
cushions are all sewn by hand. The stitching on its
exterior gives it a distinctive, exquisite appearance.
DS-600 by Ueli Berger, Eleonore
Peduzzi-Riva, Heinz Ulrich, Klaus Vogt
Comprising identical seating elements that are
zipped together to create a sofa, the caterpillar-like
DS-600 boasts a limitless range of confgurations
and outstanding fexibility. Its not hard to see why
its also called The non-stop sofa.
DS-60 by Gordon Guillaumier
The shape of a boomerang inspired the concept for DS-60. Designer Gordon
Guillaumier used this idea to create a modern sofa with slim, clean lines that
would ft in both contemporary and elegantly classic environments.
RH-305 by Robert Haussmann
This is the re-edition of RH-304, a de Sede
icon that premiered in the 1950s and caught
the attention of collectors. Besides a slimmer
upholstered surface, its seat height and frame
tilt have also been slightly modifed.
The folds

by hand!
De Sede is available at Chesters Collection. Visit www.chesterscollection.com or call +6 03 2166 8330 for more information.

The DS-1025 features
tapering steps like terraced

come together to constitute
a welcoming two-seater, a
