DuPont Glass Laminating Solutions Beam Calculator Tool

The information provided is offered for assistance in application of DuPont laminating interlayer products, but IT DOES NOT

particular applications.

DuPont laminate analysis procedures are believed to give adequate estimates of deformation of laminated glass based upon
best engineering judgment and practices but no claims are made as to the accuracy of the results obtained. Users will need to
satisfy themselves that the results are reasonable for their purposes. The performance of the final construction should be
measured before adoption to meet a specification. Any use of the information provided is the sole responsibility of the user.
Furthermore, conclusions drawn from the information provided should be checked against building code requirements in the
jurisdiction of the construction.

Because DuPont cannot anticipate or control the many different conditions under which this information and or product may

INFORMATION REFERS.

Information that can be obtained from this calculator include the following:
Maximum glass stress under load and comparison to design strength specified in standards such
as ASTM E1300
Laminate deflection
Effective laminate thickness
Laminate behavior as a function of time and temperature

Information that is needed for the calculations include the following:
Support conditions
1-sided support (examples: balustrades, balconies, stairs)
2-sided support (examples: floors, stairs, often bolted glass can be approximated)
Laminate construction
Support type (1-sided or 2 sided are allowed in this calculator)
Interlayer thickness
Glass type (annealed, heat strengthened, tempered)
Laminate dimensions
Load information
Type of load
o Uniform pressure (kPa or psi)
o Line Load (kN/m or lb/in)
Load duration
o Examples: short duration of 3 seconds may be appropriate for wind load. Intermediate
duration of 1 month is often used for snow loads on overhead glazing. Long duration
loads may be appropriate for self-weight or dead loads.

An example follows:

1. Enter in the name of your firm, email address, project name, and the desired units (metric
versus English). This data will only be used for issuing a report on your specific case. Press
Submit when you are finished. In this example, English units will be used.

2. Read the Disclaimer and choose to Accept or Cancel out of the tool. You may also return to the
previous screen by pressing Back.

3. Choose the appropriate combination of loading condition and support condition. As you mouse
over the images, the images will change to show the loading conditions. For this example, we
will choose Case 3.

4. Enter in all required data into the calculator fields. In this case, we have chosen an unsupported
span of 36 inches, a uniform load of 0.25psi, a symmetric laminate using heat strengthened
glass and 60 mil SentryGlas. The loading conditions will be 3 seconds at 104 F. Allowable stress,
Shear Modulus and Youngs Modulus will be filled in automatically based on your choices. When
complete, click Calculate.

5. Results will display below the entries completed. Note the effective thickness for SentryGlas
and PVB is displayed, as well as a comparison between the two interlayer materials for both
Glass Stress and Laminate Deflection. Green highlighted stress implies the laminate meets ASTM
E1300 while red highlighted stress implies the laminate does not meet ASTM E1300. The plots
displayed show the results for glass thicknesses near the chosen glass thickness. These plots can
be used to help select another glass thickness if the one chosen does not meet ASTM E1300. In
this example, the SentryGlas laminate meets the ASTM E1300 standard, while the PVB example
does not.
