A Letter from the President
Hello.
My name is Morgan Lee and I am a proud
member of the ADVANCE organization. I am a
graduating senior studying Communication and Public
Relations and I have been involved with ADVANCE my
entire collegiate career. I am honored to be a leader
of one of the most prominent student organizations on
the University of Cincinnatis campus as we have such
great history coupled with great leaders.

Established in 1986, ADVANCE is a professional
development organization under the guidance of
the Career Development Center (CDC). Our mission is
to empower students to reach their highest levels of
self-realization through diverse, professional
experiences. We push ourselves to become leaders of
tomorrow through hosting programs and events such
as our: Annual Diversity
Networking Reception, Corporate Excursion, Resume
Writing Workshops, Community Involvement, Mock
Interviews, and more!

Our corporate partners play a huge role in our
success as many have hosted our Leadership Team at
their corporate offices, held programs, provided
career placement assistance, provided financial
support, and mentorship. This year, corporate
partners will be hosting ADVANCE in At l ant a, GA.
We are also excited to connect with ADVANCE
Alumni in the area during our Annual Lunch. In my
past four years, I have come to learn that ADVANCE
is not for the weak-hearted, but for those who have
passion and drive to get the job done. We "Better our
Best."

Say Yes to Success:
Resume Workshop
Resume 101: Dos and Donts
Julius Trammer, HR Manager at Staples focused his
workshop on the Dos and Donts of resume writing. His
expertise and advice allowed students to grasp a better
understanding of how employers select candidates
through piles of applications.
The workshop led by Ms. Julia Montier-Ball, Assisant
Director of the Career Development Center (CDC)
Dr. Katrina Jordan, Director of the Career
Development Center focused her workshop on Highly
Effective Leadership in Resumes and Felicia Bell,
Purchasing Manager at Procter and Gamble geared her
workshop, How to Create a Resume towards students
who did not have a resume at all. All five workshops
were 10-minute rotational sessions which allowed
students to feel more comfortable and intimate with the
professionals. The ADVANCE Leadership Team held the
Elevator Speech workshop which allowed students to
practice and vocally express significant information on
their resume. General Body Member, Ronnie Jefferson (
ADVANCE Street Team Member) won the Elevator
Speech Challenge against nine other individuals. Ronnie
won a $15 gift card to Starbucks. Overall, this event
was a huge success and had a great turnout by the
General Body. We hope to make this a staple event in
the future.
The Say Yes to Success: Resume Workshop was
held Monday, October 22nd in the Career Development
Center of the University Pavilion. This program was a
collaborative event with the National Society of Black
Engineers (NSBE) and the Black Business Student
Association (BBSA). The program was designed to assist
students in areas of resume building and effective
communication.

The 2012 Annual Diversity Networking Reception
Where preparation meets opportunity
The 2012 Annual Diversity Networking Reception was held September 25th in the
Tangeman University Center. The event was sponsored by: Total Quality Logistics, Federal Home
Loan Banks, Quest Diagnostics, MACYs, and Kroger. Each year, this event allows diverse
students to network with Corporate Representatives and Lead Recruiters of Fortune 500
companies, non-profits, local businesses, and government-related agencies. This year, ADVANCE
was able to pre-register over 100 students and over 60 companies. Former ADVANCE President
(2011) and current Macys employee, Bethel Kidane was in attendance along with former Vice
President of Internal Affairs, Brooke Antoine representing Procter and Gamble. The Keynote
Speaker of the evening was Ralph Lee, Vice President of Human Resources at Total Quality

Community Service
Into the Streets: Stepping Stones
On September 22nd, ADVANCE members
participated in the University led community service
event, Into the Streets. Generally, students are taken
downtown to clean up Cincinnati, but ADVANCE
members had the unique opportunity to volunteer at
Stepping Stones: Camp Allyn in which members
engaged and interacted with individuals who have
developmental and/or physical disabilities. This was a
great experience for all our members and we hope to
return soon to our dear friends at Camp Allyn.
Volley for the Cure
ADVANCE participated in the United Black
Student Associations (UBSA) event, Volley for the
Cure in which each student group was asked to
donate money to the fight against cancer along
with bringing their competitive spirit to play
volleyball. ADVANCE made a donation and had a
great time at the event.
On Monday, November 5th
ADVANCE members cleaned the entire
Fifth Third Shoemaker Arena and
generated $800.00. This was a great
opportunity for the Leadership Team and
General Body to bond while cleaning up
newspaper confetti and crushed peanuts.
The turnout was great and we became
more grateful for our active General Body
members with each passing event.

Giving Back Hope During the Holidays!
On Thursday, November 29th, ADVANCE
partnered with Colleges Against Cancer to help
bring Christmas spirit into the lives of those who
needed it most. ADVANCE members put up many
Christmas decorations and multiple Christmas trees
throughout Hope Lodge. This was a great
opportunity to give back and to earn last minute
service hours for many Turner scholars just before
Winter Break.

ADVANCE was able to meet another student
group that night called, Relay For Life. This student
group focuses on coordinating and hosting, Relay for
Life on UCs campus in which student groups are
asked to raise money for the American Cancer
Society and camp out on McMicken Commons till the
following morning. Its one of UCs most well
attended and most popular events during Spring
Semester. ADVANCE would like to thank Hope
Lodge for personally inviting us into their home
during the holiday season!

ADVANCE FALL 2012
What s Your Career Horoscope?
January 2013
Capricorn: If you have ever wanted to
be self-employed, the first half of
January is the time to launch your new
business. Your professional reputation
will attract customers from near and
far. People know they can trust you to
do a superior job. Do you already
have your own business? You might
want to offer a long-term discount plan
for clients. In this economy it's
important to show appreciation for
those who have been loyal to you.
Money from an insurance claim or
business association will arrive toward
the end of the month, allowing you to
improve your infrastructure. Get
repairs done as soon as possible.
Aquarius: Ventures relating to imports
and exports are highly favored at the
beginning of the month. If you want to
expand your business, think about
courting overseas clients. You can
make a powerful case to a silent
partner. Are you looking for
employment? Apply for jobs at
government agencies, hospitals, and
universities. You will find a steady job
at a bureaucratic institution. A legal
matter will be decided in your favor
near the end of January. Take this
opportunity to celebrate with friends,
neighbors, and colleagues. Now that
this situation has been resolved, you
can branch out into new territory.

Pisces: Pool your resources toward
the beginning of January to launch a
product or service. You have great
instincts about what the public needs.
By obeying these impulses, you will
create long-term financial security for
you and your loved ones. A beloved
colleague will leave your midst
toward the end of January. Although
you'll miss their company, you can't
help but be excited by this turn of
events. It looks as though you'll be
given a chance to assume their
responsibilities and learn some new
technical skills. A bigger paycheck is
also in the cards. Be willing to
demand what you're worth.

Aries: An exciting career opportunity
becomes available in the first half of
January. This is your chance to climb
the ladder of success. An impressive
title and corner office could be yours
for the asking. Alternatively, you
might be asked to take over an
important job for another executive.
If you perform well, you'll lay the
groundwork for a promotion. A
creative venture comes to a close
toward the end of the month and the
reception will be surprising. People
you thought would disapprove will
express sincere admiration. You can
never predict what the public will
think. That's why it's important to take
the occasional risk.
Taurus: A career matter involving the
law, religion, or politics comes to your
attention in early January. You'll have
to learn about an unfamiliar belief
system in order to perform this job.
Keep an open mind and read
everything you can about this
philosophy. Going the extra mile will
impress a new client. A long-distance
business trip is in the cards on or
around January 11. You won't be able
to spend as much time at home toward
the end of the month thanks to a top-
secret assignment. You'll enjoy working
behind the scenes for an unusual
customer. Be willing to acquire new
technical skills.
Gemini: It's important to back up
your work during the first half of the
month. Having copies of reports
readily available will save lots of
hassle. If you're thinking about
going into business with a partner,
seal the deal near January 11.
You'll form a powerful alliance that
affords long-term security. It may be
best to team up with a silent partner
who has lots of experience in your
field of interest. An advertising
campaign will prove successful
toward the end of January.
Anything flashy, glamorous, or
glitzy will generate lots of buzz, as
well as sizable profits. This is also a
good time to send out resumes.

What s Your Career Horoscope?
January 2013

Cancer: Your business or romantic
partner will receive good news near
January 11, causing you to breathe a
sigh of relief. It will be much easier to
make ends meet now that your
associate has a steady source of
income. If you were single, this would
be a good time to form a business
alliance with a seasoned professional.
If they're good at handling finances
and establishing systems, you can
deal with customers and public
relations. A big check finally hits your
bank account toward the end of
January. Take this opportunity to
upgrade some of your equipment. A
new phone or computer system is
worth its weight in gold.
The wise creates proverbs for fools to learn, not to repeat
African Proverb
Leo: A service-oriented job will be
offered to you in the first half of
January. You'll make some powerful
connections through this position. If
you already have a job you enjoy,
this would be a great time to hire an
assistant. You'll find someone highly
capable and experienced provided
you pay a good salary. The spotlight
will be on you toward the end of the
month, which is just where you like it.
Be prepared to receive favorable
publicity for a job well done. Your
picture might even appear in the
paper or newsletter. A creative
assignment will come as a result of this
story.
Virgo: Take a bold risk during the first
half of the month. Playing it safe will
cause you to lose valuable market
share. If you're looking for a job, apply
for a position that seems out of your
league or is unrelated to your previous
experience. You'll make a great
impression during an interview,
particularly if you dress the part of a
seasoned professional. Keep a juicy
secret under wraps on or around
January 27. That's when you'll hear
exciting news about a future
assignment. Your inside knowledge will
give you an edge over the competition.
A business loan will come through in
the nick of time.

Libra: Working from home is a
distinct possibility in the beginning
of January. Fortunately, you have
all the resources necessary to do a
good job. If you fulfill your duties
on time and under budget, you
might be able to make this a
permanent arrangement. It will be
a relief to escape the rigors of a
long commute. A big office party is
scheduled near January 27. Be
sure to attend. You need to keep in
contact with colleagues who can
help you up the ladder of success.
Who you know is just as important
as what you know.

Scorpio: New equipment makes your
job much easier. Of course, it will take
time to master new programs and learn
how to operate high-speed gadgets. Be
patient. These skills will serve you long
into the future. A highly competent
colleague can show you the ropes
provided you demonstrate the proper
respect for his or her abilities. A
powerful executive will leave the office
toward the end of January. This poses a
wonderful opportunity to get some
different assignments. You don't want to
get stale doing the same job every day.
Branching out will prove stimulating. It
will also put you in contact with some
talented people with bold ideas.
Sagittarius: A moneymaking
opportunity will become available near
January 11. This job will involve
tremendous responsibility, but you'll be
able to handle the pressure. As a
general rule, you have preferred to
take a casual approach to your career.
This situation will prove the exception
to the rule. By adopting a highly
professional attitude you can quickly
rise through the ranks of the
organization. Your advanced
knowledge will come in handy when
you're asked to teach a class during the
second half of January. Your irreverent
style will attract lots of students. They'll
appreciate your fresh, funny way of
presenting complicated information.
Meanwhile, their enthusiasm will lift
your spirits. It's a win/win situation.
