The Stilwell High School Class of 1964 gathered for a class photo as they celebrated their 50th Anniversary last month.
In honor of the librarys
summer reading pro-
gram, I am reviewing a
well-known childrens
book, The Voyages of
Doctor Dolittle, by
Hugh Lofting. This book
won the prestigious
Newbery Medal Award
in 1923, the second book
to do so after the award
was established in 1922.
Speaking of the
Newbery Medal Award,
if you want your child to
read the classics, ask
him/her to read from the
Newbery list, and
he/she will have over 90
choices, ranging from
the first 1922 winner,
The Story of Mankind,
to the 2014 winner,
Flora and Ulysees: the
I l l u m i n a t e d
Adventures, by Kate
DiCamillo, a previous
winner in 2004 for The
Tale of Desperaux.
When I was active in
education, as a
teacher/librarian, I
would promote the
Newberry Award win-
ners by telling my stu-
dents that the Newbery
Medal Awards were like
the Academy Awards for
movies,
The Voyages of Doctor
Dolittle, is told by
Tommy Stubbins, a poor
cobblers son, who
comes to Doolittle, hop-
ing that the great natu-
ralist and animal doctor
can heal an injured squir-
rel that he has found.
Imagine his surprise
when he learns that not
only can Dolittle heal
animals, he can also
carry on conversations
with them! So begins a
friendship and a great
adventure for Tommy as
he begins to spend most
of his time assisting the
doctor at his home,
which also serves as his
office and animal hospi-
tal. Tommy yearns to be
just like Doctor Dolittle,
and his parents allow
him to live with the doc-
tor and become his
apprentice. Tommy is
very happy with the doc-
tor, and even more so,
when he announces that
they will be taking a voy-
age across the world to
locate another naturalist,
who has disappeared,
Long Arrow. This news
thrills Tommy because
Tommys heart yearns to
cross the sea, to walk on
foreign shores, to roam
the world!
Like many books, The
Voyages of Doctor
Dolittle, has been made
into several movies,
including the 2006
movie, Doctor Dolittle
3. Since we have both
the book and Doctor
Dolittle 1,2, and 3 movies
in our system, you can
read the book first
(always recommended),
and then you can enjoy
watching the movies
based on the book.
Remember if our copy of
the book or movie is not
available, we can order
both for you from one of
the other 14 libraries that
are in our EODLS sys-
tem. Enjoy your summer
reading!

The Eastern Oklahoma
District Library System
and the Stilwell Public
Library wish to thank the
supporters and Friends
of the Library for provid-
ing the programs and
materials for the 2014
Summer Reading
Program. Without their
assistance, all of these
fun, educational activi-
ties would not be possi-
ble.
Kids, you wont want to
miss our next exciting
library program, the
Smomobile Museum
(Science Matters Mobile
Museum)! You will get
to climb on-board a 40-
foot truck that is full of
fun, interactive science
exhibits. See you at 10
a.m. on Wednesday,
June 18, at your Stilwell
Public Library.
Parents, thank you so
much for bringing your
children to our library
programs. We are all
very pleased that 210
children have attended
the four programs that
have been presented thus
far.
