Research Paper Title:

Effect of compatibility between conscious goal and

non-conscious (unconscious) priming on
performance
Past studies have indicated that using goal priming and explicitly given
instructions (subconscious manipulation) produce similar outcomes and
influence a broad range of behaviors. The purpose of this study was to test this
hypothesis. However this theory is not new, yet has been proven and practiced
for hundreds of years.
According to Freud, the unconscious is the source of our motivations,
whether they are simple desires such as food, sex, or neurotic
compulsions. Everything, both good and bad, seems to stem from the
expression or repression of the sex drive.
Maslow a humanistic psychologist, believed that human beings are
not pushed or pulled by mechanical forces, stimuli, reinforcements or
unconscious instinctual impulses (priming). Every human action is
done consciously in pursuit of reaching self-actualization.
Experiment
1) The wire game move a metal ring along a wire avoiding contact between
the ring and the wire: accuracy goal priming (high, moderate, low). Base
your accuracy on the level primed.
2) The scrambled sentence task participants requested to produce a
sentence using words presented in a scrambled order. Two versions of
task, first one intended to prime accuracy, the other to prime inaccuracy.
20 out of 30 sentences contained a word or expression related to accuracy
(sharpshooter, detailed, thoroughness) or inaccuracy (clumsy, wrong)

Results Concluded
In the study the experiments proved that consciously goal directed
execution of a complex motor behavior was partly regulated by processes
triggered by a non-conscious priming manipulation. This indicates that the
pursuit of a conscious goal can be influenced by external factors that
unconsciously regulate behaviors outside of peoples awareness.

Conclusion: Throw Away Your Television
According to the text:
Test concluded that regulation of behavior by non-conscious priming
opens a wide range of perspectives. Results support the idea that
compatibility between primed contents and conscious goals constitutes
an important factor regarding the interplay of priming and conscious goal
pursuits.
