CASE STUDY ON DEFORESTATION IN YOUR LOCALITY

Introduction:
Deforestation: Deforestation, clearance or clearing is the removal of a forest or stand of trees
where the land is thereafter converted to a non-forest use. Deforestation occurs for many reasons:
trees are cut down to be used or sold as fuel (sometimes in the form of charcoal) or timber, while
cleared land is used as pasture for livestock, plantations of commodities and settlements. The
removal of trees without sufficient reforestation has resulted in damage to habitat, biodiversity loss.
Disregard or ignorance of intrinsic value, lack of ascribed value, lax forest management and deficient
environmental laws are some of the factors that allow deforestation to occur on a large scale. In many
countries, deforestation, both naturally occurring and human induced, is an ongoing issue.
Deforestation causes extinction, changes to climatic conditions, desertification, and displacement of
populations as observed by current conditions and in the past through the fossil record

Problem: In Kavoor area many trees have been chopped in the name of development. This has
resulted in high pollution and soil erosion. The common people are suffering with the after effects of
deforestation. So this soil erosion leads to all kinds of allergies and breathing problems. Just
developing area and not taking any initiative on planting trees will only worsen the whole situation.

Key Findings
1. In the town area many trees have been chopped and 4 apartments are being constructed.
2. Chopping of trees have been found in residential areas like wood co and Kudremukh
quarters for personal use which is really causing a lot of harm.
3. There has been continuous complain of air pollution and water pollution where construction
work has been going on. People are suffering from allergies and some cases of malaria have
been reported.
4. The common peoples lives have been affected as there is no proper sanitation and the air
which they breathe has become so polluted. They have lodged a complaint but so far no
measures have been taken.
5. Landslides do occur because of certain mountain areas which have been cleared for the
purpose of constructions .

Solutions
1. Make the people aware of the ill effects of deforestations.
2. Reforestation helps in improving the quality of the environment as well as of human life.
Trees help in reducing pollution and in mitigating global warming.
3. Use recycled products and avoid felling of trees.
4. Social forestation surrounding the city avoids to a large extent soil erosion and also helps in
keeping the environment neat and clean.
