Chapter 1: The Seismicity of the territory
Earthquake Engineering is a field of engineering that
aims to reduce the effects of earthquakes on
constructions. It covers various aspects, including:
(1) the study aspects of seismology and geology that are important
to the matter
(2) analysis the dynamic response of the structure under the action
of seismic motion
(3) development and application of methods for planning, design
and execution of constructions resistant to earthquakes.
Earthquake Engineering intertwines with geosciences on
the one hand, and social sciences, architecture and
authorities on the other.
Chapter 1: The Seismicity of the territory
Seismology is the study of the generation, propagation and
measurement of seismic waves through earth and the
sources that generate them (natural sources such as
earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and artificial sources such
as underground explosions).
Engineering seismology aims to explain and predict strong
seismic motions from one site and study the seismic motion
characteristics that are important for the response of
engineering structures.
In the 19
th
century a number of English engineers became
interested in earthquakes and contributed significantly to
earthquake knowledge. They included Robert Mallet (a civil
engineer) who invented the word seismology, witch is derived
from Greek words meaning shake-knowledge. He also coined
the term epicenter.
