RED SOX MANAGER JOHN FARRELL:

On Lackey not covering first on fourth-inning Dustin Ackley ground ball

No, I think in the midst of a 13-pitch at bat, he makes a quality pitch to finally record the ground ball...and then
whether or not he anticipated the ball going through the hole. Mike Napoli makes a very nice back-handed play
and gets the lead out, and in just a lapse there didnt allow John to receive the back end of the throw to get a
potential double play.

Going out to the mound after that play...

When he crouched down, we wanted to double check and make sure that he was okay. And he said he was
perfectly fine and we came back in at that time.

On having first poor pitching start in a month and a half...

Not only from a staff stand point, but in the last year and a half from John Lackey. He has been a model of
consistency, he has pitched so well for us. Not to take anything away from the Mariners hitters, I thought he
had very good stuff to open up the game with... and trying to get that third out in that fourth inning turned into a
6 run inning. And at that point, going against Felix Hernandez, thats a tall order to try and come back from.
