Beaujolais Nouveau
Every year on the third of November, more than a million cases
of Beaujolais Nouveau are rushed to Paris as French vintners race
to see whose wine will be the rst uncorked at midnight. Over the
past few decades, this annual tradition has become something of
a national sport throughout France. French winemakers also ship
this much anticipated wine across the world.
Chteanueuf-du-Pape
From 1308 until 1388, the headquarters of the Roman Catholic
Church was relocated from Rome to Avignon. During that time,
the papal courts developed a taste for the local wine and promoted
viticulture throughout the region. Wines from this region came to
be known rst as Vin du Pape and later as Chteauneuf-du-Pape.
To this day, the papal symbol of crossed keys can be found on
every bottle produced there.

Terroir
Terroir can be translated as a sense of place, and refers to the
geography, geology and climate that give a distinctive avor
to grapes grown in a particular region. Along the Rhone, for
example, it is thought that limestone-clay soil produces a full-
bodied bouquet, while dry, stony soil imparts a rened, fruity
avor. Many in France believe that a winemakers primary role
is to bring out the fullest expression of a wines terroir.

On an AmaWaterways wine

THE SEINE
The Seine rises in northeastern France near Dijon, winds its way through Paris and continues westward to
the English Channel. The Seine and its iconic bridges and riverside walkways throughout the City of Lights
have inspired artists, writers and musicians for centuries.
En route to the coast, you will take an excursion to Monets magnicent gardens in Giverny, a colorful
tapestry of owers, shaded pathways and lily-covered ponds. Youll also tour the historic city of Rouen, as
famous for its Gothic cathedral as for its tragic connection to Joan of Arc, burned at the stake here in 1431.
Your Paris & Normandy cruise meanders through Normandys lush countryside, past contented cows and
apple orchards and the ruins of monasteries and chteaux, one of the most memorable routes in all of
France. The region gets its name from the Viking Norsemen who sailed up the Seine in the 9th century.
Memories of another invasion, the D-Day Landings of 1944, still linger here.
The gentle pace of your river cruise ofers many opportunities to savor the countrys famous wines and
spirits. Tour the Calvados region to sample its celebrated apple brandy, or explore the picturesque port
of Honeur, with its narrow harbor and tall pastel-colored houses. Alternatively, visit the town of Fcamp,
home to the famous Bndictine herbal liqueur created by monks in the 19th century. Its complex recipe
of aromatics and spices remains a closely-guarded secret even to this day.

Calvados
Calvados is an apple brandy from the Normandy region of
France with a long and storied history dating back to the
mid-1500s. Calvados producers often use over one hundred
specially grown and selected varieties of apples, which are
harvested, pressed into juice and fermented into a dry cider.
The liquid is aged in barrels for two years, resulting in a
potent liquor with a nearly forty percent alcohol content.
Dom Prignon
Contrary to popular myth, the Benedictine monk Dom Prignon
did not invent the champagne method for making sparkling
wine. A cellar master at the Abbey in Hautvillers in northeastern
France, Dom Prignon, was the rst to blend grapes in such a way
as to improve the quality of wines. His legacy endures in the form
of a prestigious Champagne from Mot & Chandon that bears
his name.

The Norman Hole
The trou normand or Norman hole is a palate-cleansing
pause between courses, when diners partake of a small glass
of Calvados brandy. According to folklore, this well-timed
shot of alcohol burns a hole (un trou) in your stomach so
you have room to fully indulge in the next course. This tradition
is still observed in many homes and restaurants throughout
the Normandy region.

THE DOURO
Northern Portugals Douro River Valley the birthplace of port wine and a designated UNESCO World
Heritage Site has a harsh, otherworldly terrain sculpted by centuries of determined winegrowers. As the
hardy inhabitants have been known to boast, God made the earth, but man made the Douro.
On both of our Douro itineraries Enticing Douro and Port Wine & Flamenco you will enjoy tastings
of port, the sweet fortied wine unique to Portugal. Once aboard your ship, the river will take you on an
adventure through craggy, twisting canyons, past laboriously terraced vineyards, villages untouched by
time, and the crumbling ruins of monasteries. Legends and rural customs continue to thrive here, and many
locals still believe in the evil eye, witches and golden-haired spirits living at the bottom of wells.
Journey onward to Quinta Avessada, a family-owned wine estate where you will enjoy warm hospitality
and learn about centuries-old wine-making methods. Throughout this ruggedly beautiful corner of the
world, you will also have ample opportunities to try the excellent red and white table wines collectively
known as Douro wines, as well as Vinho Verde, the light and sparkling green wine of the Minho Province,
so named for its youthful, fruity freshness.
If this is your rst time to the dramatic Douro River Valley, prepare to be amazed. Portugal produces
several hundred indigenous varieties of grapes, making for an endless procession of distinctive, delicious
and truly memorable taste experiments.

Mateus
Mateus is a sweet and zzy ros wine produced in Portugal.
Created in the 1940s near the end of World War II, Mateus is
known for its distinctive narrow-necked, ask-shaped bottle,
unique baroque historic mansion label and cork stopper. Crisp
and refreshing with a delightfully bubbly texture, Mateus is
popular around the world and is referred to by name in a song
by Elton John.
Rabelo Boats
Invented in the 18th century, the Rabelo boat was once used
to transport barrels of port wine from the vineyards of the Douro
Valley. Due to the perilous nature of the Douro, these distinctive
at-bottomed boats were designed to safely deliver precious
liquid cargo down the river. Though no longer used to transport
wine, the Rabelo boat remains a traditional symbol of port
winemaking.

Port Wine
Port wine is a strong, sweet fortied wine produced exclusively
in the Douro River Valley in northern Portugal, one of the worlds
oldest protected wine regions. Sometime in the late 17th century,
the wine became known as port in honor of the city of Porto,
where much of the product was stored, aged in oak barrels,
sold at market and exported to other European countries.
Fado
Fado is a music genre usually linked to the Portuguese word
saudade, which can be translated as nostalgia or longing. Its
origins can be traced from the 1820s in Portugal but is likely much
older. Fado is typically characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics,
often about the sea or the life of the poor, and always follows a
distinct musical structure.

THE DANUBE
Captured in art, literature and Strausss famous Blue Danube waltz, the Danube is one of the worlds
most romantic waterways. Extending for thousands of miles through Central Europe, the river ows
eastward through Austrias fabled Wachau Valley, a wine region long revered for its incredible natural
beauty and delicious white wines.
Austrias vibrant wine scene has earned a reputation for quality and innovation, making it the perfect
destination for wine lovers seeking new avors and Old World culture and charm. Riesling is a specialty
of this area, as is Grner Veltliner, a high-spirited and ery wine that makes a delicious accompaniment to
the regional cuisine.
The legendary Wachau Valley is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved
landscape and abundant medieval abbeys and fortress ruins. Journey to Drnstein, a lovely Baroque-era
town tucked at the base of a steep hill overlooking the Danube. Hike to the top to get a stunning view of
the valley and explore the castle ruins where Englands King Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned during
the Crusades.
Our Romantic Danube and Melodies of the Danube itineraries will transport you back in time as you
experience the wonder of Melks 900-year-old Benedictine abbey and the medieval town of Krems.
You will also enjoy a Heuriger evening at a traditional Austrian wine tavern, a casual place to appreciate
newly pressed local wines, listen to music and relax with friends.

Riesling
One of the worlds most acclaimed grapes, Riesling has a strong
personality and high acidity and ranges from dry to intensely
sweet. The fruit thrives in Germany and Austrias cooler climates
and is susceptible to noble rot, a fungus that attacks certain
ripe grapes and dehydrates them, giving the wine immense
richness and sweetness.
Wine Legs
Wine Legs, Tears of Wine and Church Windows are all
charming descriptions of the droplets that form in a ring near
the top of a glass of wine. The drops continuously form and
fall in rivulets back into the liquid, a phenomenon indicative
of the alcohol content of the wine. Some people believe these
rivulets can be interpreted much as a fortuneteller might read
tea leaves.

THE RHINE
The stunningly beautiful Rhine River Valley has long been a paradise for wine lovers. Steeped in legend
and myth, revered by the likes of Goethe and Lord Byron, the Rhine rises in the Alps and makes its way
north through Switzerland, Germany, France and the Netherlands. In a region rich in fairy tale castles, the
Rhine Valley the heartland of the Holy Roman Empire has more castles than in any other river valley in
the world. Many have survived the ravages of war, neglect and time, and stand like sentinels on the clifs
above quaint riverside villages.
The Enchanting Rhine itinerary takes you through two of the most celebrated wine regions in Europe.
You will sample Rieslings and other distinctive light white wines at various wineries, including some of
Germanys oldest and most renowned vineyards. Further north, savor vin dAlsace in charming medieval
towns such as Riquewihr, one of the best-preserved villages in France. Explore these picture-book
hamlets at your leisure, strolling along narrow cobblestone streets worn smooth by generations of use.
Wineries abound throughout the Rhine Valley and youll have many opportunities to experience the
avorful products of viticulteurs all along the river. Back on board, relax with friends, take in the breathtaking
scenery and allow yourself to slip backwards in time, pulled along by the silver thread of the gently
owing Rhine.

Bocksbeutel & Franconian Wines
The distinctively rounded and attened Bocksbeutel wine bottle
was designed with practicality in mind, as the peculiar shape
keeps the bottle from rolling around on uneven surfaces. This
ingenious bottle was used as far back as the early 18th century
to store wines from the Franconia region in Germany. Within
European Union countries today, the Bocksbeutel enjoys the
status of a protected bottle shape.
Saint Goar of Aquitaine
St. Goar of Aquitaine is the patron saint of vine growers and hotel
keepers. He was a kind-hearted German monk who founded a
hospice where he used the medicinal properties of wine to cure
the sick. Over the years, he became well known for his prophecies
and miracles and many legends evolved about him. After his
death, his grave became a pilgrimage site and the nearby area
was named Sankt Goar in his honor.

reservations person, travel agent or any other source
is booked, but is incorrect due to an electronic error,
typographical error, human error or any other error
causing the fare to be listed, quoted or advertised for an
amount not intended by AmaWaterways, AmaWaterways
reserves the right to correct the erroneous fare by
requesting the passenger to pay the correct fare intended,
or by canceling the booking. Airfares, air taxes and air

Cancellation charges are per person, based on the
cancellation date, as outlined below.
Protection plan premiums are non-refundable. After travel
begins, there is no refund for unused services, or
unused portions of cruise, cruise/tour or airfare.

Flight Schedules & Airfares: AmaWaterways ofers
special airfares based on the ight and seat availability
of contracted carriers. We are able to accept a
TERMS & CONDITIONS
travelers choice of preferred air carrier, ight schedule,
and some deviations so long as the requests are made
at the time of booking the airline reservation. To hold/
conrm an airline reservation the airlines require your
full legal name as it appears on your passport. A deposit
of $300 per person is required to secure the ight
schedule and quoted price. Once the airfare deposit or
full payment is received your airline tickets will be issued
and any changes will be subject to penalty if not cancelled
within 24 hours of ticketing Should the name on your
airline reservation not match your passport, your airline
reservation will have to be cancelled, full penalties
will be assessed and your reservation will have to be
recreated subject to market pricing at the time of the
new reservation.
Air tickets are economy class, unless otherwise
requested and additional charge for upgrade is paid,
and are issued pursuant to the terms and conditions
of the relevant airline(s). Airlines require your name to
appear on your airline ticket exactly as it appears on
your passport. We shall not be responsible or liable for
consequences of name on an airline reservation and
passport not matching exactly. We shall not be
responsible or liable for costs resulting from airline
schedule changes, lost air ticket, delay, disruption or
cancelled ight; lost baggage or missed connections.
Changes: Air tickets issued by AmaWaterways have
restrictions. For example, they cannot be reissued,
transferred, or exchanged unless approved by the carrier
and a fee may be charged by the carrier. A change or
refund request must be made through us, but may
not be possible. For example, some air tickets are
non-refundable. An administrative fee of $50 per ticket
may be charged by us, in addition to airline change
and cancellation fees, charged according to the airlines
fee schedule.
Limitation on Special Requests & Frequent Flier
Numbers: As a courtesy, we may try to relay a request
for seat assignments, meal requests, frequent yer

directly with the airline regarding any such requests.
To insure you receive proper credit on your frequent
yer account, we recommend you provide your frequent

to either one or two pieces per person, and limit
carry-on baggage to one piece per person, and weight
and size restrictions apply. There are strict luggage
restrictions for our programs in Africa; where guests
are required to travel with soft-sided luggage (i.e. dufel
bags) for intra-Africa small plane ights. Flights are
limited to a maximum 15kg (33lbs) or 20 kg (44lbs),
including hand luggage, depending on the itinerary.
