Modular Mazda Shipping Container Car Dealership To Be Built in Phases
Recognizing they were designing a building to sell carbon intensive machinery, Site Specifc wanted to make sure the building
would be as eco-friendly as possible. Te client also needed the dealership fast in order to start selling cars immediately. Te solu-
tion then was a modular construction where the dealership would be built in six stages.
Site Specifc chose shipping containers for three reasons: frst, they reduce the carbon footprint of the construction process and
recycles existing materials; second, it allows them to achieve an industrial aesthetic with the overall symbolism of the transporta-
tion system; and third, the containers are modular, which allows them to build in phases. As an added bonus, because the property
is leased, should the Mazda dealership ever need to move, the entire structure can be dismantled, transported and rebuilt in a new
locale.

constructiv PILA IV by Burkhardt Leitner
At EuroShop 2011 Burkhardt Leitner, manufacturer of modular architecture systems, presented an extension of
the system family constructiv pila. Te new architecture system constructiv pila IV with an axis length of up to
6 m is distinguished as the largest of the modular architecture systems by Burkhardt Leitner. Tis advancement
ofers the possibility to create maximum space with a minimum of components and thus to further reduce
assembly times and prices per square metre. A clip-in beading profle, which can be ftted retrospectively and
which has been specially developed for constructiv pila IV, allows large fabric inflls to be incorporated cleanly
and fush with the profle.
Te constructiv pila system family is based on connector/support connections. Te precision-cast special steel
connectors are, together with the supports of natural-anodised aluminium, the basic design elements of the sys-
tem. Other structural elements such as diagonal braces, trusses and angle reinforcements made of high-strength
special steel ensure the stability of even the most complex structures. System grooves permit the use of a wide
variety of materials as wall and ceiling panels, and also the subsequent attachment of a wealth of accessories. As
the classic version of the modular architecture systems by Burkhardt Leitner, the pila systems are distinguished
by their fexible and modular design principles and their immense depth of equipment and applications. Tis
allows their extremely variable use in every feld of temporary architecture.

0 DESIGN PRINCIPLES
'Be lazy like a fox'. Rather than solving problems from scratch, adapt other people's solutions, and then give them credit. Linus Torvalds thought of this phrase.
Design for materials and components which are reasonably cheap to buy, low-carbon and fully recyclable or biodegradable.
Design is disruptive when it lowers the threshold. Design structures which can be assembled with minimal formal skill or training, and without the use of power tools.
WikiHouses should be capable of being habitable throughout the year, and as efcient as possible in the use of energy and water. We are working to get to the frst habitable WikiHouse prototype built in the near
future.
Design in such a way as to ofer maximum provision for the safety, security and health (both mental and physical) of the users at all stages of the structure's life.
As a general rule, design for the climate, culture, economy and legal / planning framework in which you live, and you know best. Others will then be able to adapt the design to suit their environment.
Share your work as much and as openly as possible, it might come back better. At very least you'll have contributed to solving a common problem. All components on WikiHouse are shared under a creative com-
mons license, and authors are always attributed.
"It is easier to ship recipes than cakes and biscuits" - John Maynard Keynes
Design to dismantle. Te easier it is to dismantle structures or replace individual parts, the better.
Design for mistakes. Try to design components which either make it impossible for the assembler to get it wrong or are designed in such a way that it doesn't matter if they do.
