(The students work hard all year, and the trip is part of our incentive program.) It is always such a pleasure to travel with teens and see them encounter new experiences. Gene and I have lived in the Northwest now for 12 years and have been to Seattle several times, but we have never experienced Seattle this way before! This year we toured the Gates Foundation for the very first time! What an incredible experience for kids (and adults)! Our guides were so good with the students, and the displays and informational exhibits were both interesting and challenging! There was so much to process, so many problems to solve, and so many gadgets to fiddle with! It was inspiring and encouraging to see our students responses! The Gates Foundation is endeavoring to make positive changes all around the world and challenges and encourages each visitor, especially young people to make a difference in their world. Secondly, we experienced the Seattle Underground Tour. Did you know Seattle is a city built on a city? It was definitely an educational and entertaining tour; our guide totally captivated the students with his information and corny jokes. Of course we couldnt go to Seattle without taking in Pike Place Market and a Seattle Mariners game. What a great experience for our kids and a perfect day, weather-wise! Thank you to all of those who give that we might offer such opportunities to our students. Heres what one student had to say about the trip: I just want to give thanks to all the mystery people who donate money to the Extra Mile Student Center so that teenagers are able to have somewhere to go when in need of homework help or just to hang out and for also allowing us, the leadership team and tutoring group to go on trips! THANK YOU ALL! LOVE YOU GENE & KATHY FOR ALL YOU DO COMPUTER WORKSHOP We just completed our first workshop of the summer June 19th! Inside a Computer was a new addition to our workshops this year. Since we were given grant money from Wal-Mart and Legends Casino to update our computers, we have replaced a hodge podge of donated computers, (for which we were extremely grateful.) Our computer workshop was thought up to put these older computers to use and recycle them! We had 12 students and, yes, all of them were guys! The student center looked like a mechanics shop with lots of spare parts! At the end of the week, each student took home a rebuilt computer! As you can imagine the feedback from the students was rewarding:
We would like to thank Computer Works in Yakima for their time and expertise in thoroughly checking each computer before the workshop to insure we had the right parts, Rick Lundy, for donating his time and computer expertise to teach the students, Danny Snider for his assistance with the workshop, a Moms in Touch group (Carolyn Larson, Liz Hays, Sherrie Jones, and Debby Schenck) for providing wonderful meals each day, and Legends Casino and Wal-Mart! We are constantly amazed at how things can turn out so well when many people get involved to help! It was fun and an amazing experience. I was lucky enough to get accepted into this one of a kind class. Im glad I was able to participate and learn the inside of a computer. I will take what I learned and make an awesome computer. Im extremely grateful for the equipment given to keep. Thank you!

May Finances May Donations - $12,059 Monthly Budget $10,568 Actual May Expenses - $10,304 Pledged for June - $7,251 SUCCESS EQUALS A PAIR OF SEATTLE SOCKS AND A STARBUCKS GIFT CARD?? With the last days of school, came the last meetings of our Success Connection tutor/mentoring groups! Each week the students in this program accumulate points as they show up, bring homework, work diligently (and sometimes leisurely), check and discuss grades with their mentor/tutor, and celebrate big and small accomplishments. At times it can be challenging to motivate and keep students on task, so we applaud our volunteer tutor/mentors for their gentle prodding and tireless encouragement! Our students desperately need adults who will go the distance with them! Thank you to these very special people! As a reward to our students for a year of hard work, we have an end-of-the- year party where they can spend their points on a variety of items, which are donated and/or purchased from donations for the Success Connection incentive program. What a fun time it is for the students and for us (mentor/tutors) as we watch them spend their points! The student with the most points starts the buying, and students take turns choosing their favorite items as long as the points last! Thank you again to all of those who make this program possible! We couldnt provide this opportunity without our dedicated mentors and our donors! SOCIAL MEDIA INTERN Brenda J. Sandoval is our new Social Media Intern. Thanks to a sponsorship from Hops Direct/Puterbaugh Farms, we get to have Brenda helping with our Facebook, website, fundraisers, and other marketing and social media efforts through the end of 2014. Brenda graduated from Prosser High School, class of 2012. She is currently attending YVCC- Grandview Campus. She is going to school for Business Marketing and hopes to eventually transfer to a four-year college. She also works at Chase Bank in Grandview. Brenda says, I hope this experience helps me figure out if going into Marketing is the right choice for me. So far, its been a good experience and lots of fun. LEGENDS CASINO GRANT We were honored to be the recipients of a grant from Legends Casino in the amount of $2,500. The grant was given to us to replace older computers with new ones. It enables our students to remain in touch with the ever- changing and advancing technology so they can prepare for college and employment opportunities. Thank you, Legends! 3 on 3 TOURNEY A HUGE SUCCESS! 120 players on 30 teams came from all over the area to participate in this years 3 on 3 Tournament. Thanks for playing and congratulations to the champions Wet Wet Game in the Varsity Division and The Crossover in the C-Squad Division.
