GENERAL RULES

Students should wear their ID cards when they are in the campus.

Students should not come to college by two wheelers.

Students are not allowed to bring their guests to college during the class hours.

Students should not leave the campus during working hours. If they need to leave, they
should get the out pass from the Head of the department or the Principal.

Students should not bring Mobile phone/ i-pod/ MP3 Player/camera to college.

Students should not damage the college property. Heavy penalty will be imposed on the
students for the damaged property.

Students are forbidden from going to canteen or loitering along the
corridor during the class hours.

Students should be dressed in formal dresses while attending the classes and moving
inside the campus.

Students should not indulge in any kind of celebrations inside the campus.

Ragging in any form is a punishable crime. It is strictly forbidden inside or outside the
campus.

1. OUR COLLEGE :

Kamaraj College of Engineering and Technology is the outcome of the
cherished desire and dream of the people of Virudhunagar. It is also a long felt need of this
region. It is rightly named after the son of this soil, Bharat Ratna Sri.K. KAMARAJ
who was the undisputed leader of the suppressed and downtrodden and a champion
of free education for the masses.

Our College was established in the year 1998-1999. It is promoted and
supported by Virudhunagar Hindu Nadars Devasthanam, various Hindu Nadars
Mahamai Tharappus in Virudhunagar and other places and educational institutions of
Virudhunagar. The management of the institution consists of the elected members of
various Mahamai Tharappus of Virudhunagar. The Office-Bearers, the President, the Vice-
President, the Secretary, the Joint Secretary and the Treasurer - are elected by the
Managing Board Members.

9.2 PLACEMENT CELL :


The placement cell effectively functions under the guidance of our secretary and
Principal giving ample opportunities to the budding Technocrats. Students are trained by
experts from various training organizations. Also, to ensure continuous training for
all the students, everyday one coaching hour is assigned for the Placement training.
150 students were placed in the 2011 batch and 120 students got placement in the 2012
batch till march 2012 through placement cell with a maximum salary package of
Rs.4,50,000 / annum. All efforts are taken to reach 100% Placement in the near future.

COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT :

Computer Science & Engineering program was introduced at Kamaraj College of
Engineering and Technology in the academic year 1998-99, with a sanctioned intake of 40
students. The department offers a four-year program which is more sufficient to prepare the
graduates in all aspects of the knowledge required for the IT industry, both process of
Technology and research and development.

Electronics and Communication Engineering Department:
An ever increasing pace of development in electronics, audio & video communication
systems and the automation industry have made an electronic engineer a catalyst for the
change of the modern society. Electronics gadgets and communication systems of present age
have tremendously improved the quality of life.
The Department of Electronics &Communication Engineering was established in our
college in 1998 with an intake of 40 students. Now, it is increased to 120.In 2011, the
department has started M.E. degree program in Computer and Communication Engineering with
an intake of 18 students.
OBJECTIVE:
To set International Quality standards and Innovative trends of Comprehensive education to
inspire students and nurture the development of their minds, core competence, Multi-Skills,
attitude and leadership qualities, in order to realize career pathways for every one through

LABORATORIES:
To supplement the theoretical concepts with practical knowledge of the students, we have
the following laboratories in our department.
1. Electronic Devices and Circuits Lab
This lab is well equipped with latest equipment like all types of power supplies, Scientific
CRO (30MHz)(both single & dual beam), audio & high frequency oscillators, frequency counters,
analog & digital multimeters and Digital Storage Oscilloscopes. Latest simulation software
Tinapro and ORCAD PSPICE 16.2 software are also available.
2. Linear and Digital IC Lab
This lab is provided with digital IC trainer kits, digital IC tester, Function generator, Multi-
output power supplies CRO and a plenty of basic and advanced Integrated Circuit Chips.
3. Digital Signal Processing Lab
For improving the signal processing skills of our Communication department students, the
lab is equipped with TMS320C25, TMS320C33, TMS320C50, TMS320C5416, TMS320C6713,
ADSP2105, ADSP2181 processor kits and Matlab software. Universal Code Composer Studio
software is used for C language programming and debugging.
4. Digital Image Processing Lab
To process all kinds of images and noise removal for quality improvement, latest
hardware and software are available in this lab.
5. Analog and Digital Communication Lab
It is highly equipped with all types of analog, digital modulation kit, multiplexing kits,
transmitter and Receiver kit.
6. Optical Communication Lab
Optical communication lab is equipped with more number of fiber optic trainer kits both
with LED and Laser sources. Optical power meter and Digital Storage Oscilloscopes are used for
the measurement of power levels in optical and electrical mode respectively.

7. Microwave Communication Lab
The state-of-art fully air conditioned microwave lab consists of 5 work benches in J-band
and X-band, Klystron and Gunn Oscillators for generating microwave frequencies in 8-12.4 GHz
range. Microwave power meter is available for measuring the high frequency signal strength.
8. RF Antenna Lab
The newly established RF lab is fully equipped with leading brand equipments. The lab
consists of RF sources, spectrum analyzer (150 KHz 1000 MHz), 100MHz CRO, 100MHz Digital
Storages Oscilloscope and sets of complete Antenna equipment. These facilities support
designing, verification and implementation stages, thereby providing an ideal platform to foster
developmental activities of the students.
9. Microprocessors and Microcontroller Lab
This laboratory is well equipped with Intel 8085, Intel 8086, Zilog Z80, Processors, Intel
8031, Motorola 6811 PIC Microcontrollers and MSP 430 - IAR Workbench software. All modern
equipments like EPROM programmer, EPROM eraser, traffic light controllers, A/D, D/A
Convertors, stepper motors and universal PIC Microcontroller with Keil/ Ride software are
integrated together to promote our students as intellectuals in the field of system designing. PC
based MASM assembler for 8086 processor is available to perform the programs in PC itself.
10. VLSI Lab
The newly established VLSI lab is equipped with VLSI Design Trainer Kit. Design tools like
Xilinx Model sim and Tanner are also available. Students can learn Verilog and VHDL languages.
11. Computer and Communication Lab:
This laboratory is highly equipped with MATLAB software, DSP Processor TMS320C5416,
universal PIC Microcontroller.
12. Research Lab:
This Laboratory is fully utilized by research scholars. It has various licensed software such
as MATLAB, Lab View which are highly useful for the faculties doing research work.
Licensed Software:
Highly efficient Licensed software available in ECE Department are Tanner, IAR
Workbench software, MATLAB, Xilinx, ORCAD PSPICE 16.2, Ride/Keil software and Code
composer Studio. These are the software which are really helpful to the students doing in
projects in all areas.
Department Library:
In addition to the Central Library, ECE Department has its own library; this contains
important titles including all department subjects. Students are advised to fully utilize these
books and journals for further enhancement of their subject knowledge. Books will be borrowed
to both faculties and students. HOD and Library in-charge control the functioning of Department
Library.
More than 620 books and 190 project reports are available in the department library for the
knowledge up gradation of the students and the library is open for students reference

The department was started in the year 1998. It is well established in terms of
infrastructure, laboratory requirements, class rooms and faculty as specified by AICTE, New
Delhi. More than the formal requirements, it is equipped with modern instruments so as to

1. Industrial Instrumentation Lab :
The Instrumentation Lab is provided with measuring devices like thermistor,
Thermocouple and RTDs for temperature, Dead weight tester, Vaccum Pressure Gauge for
Pressure, Rotameter, Orifice meter, Venturi meter and Electromagnetic flow meter for flow
measurement, spectrophotometer for analysing the concentration of liquids, paramagnetic
analyser, ECG recorder, B.P. apparatus, transducers to measure various parameters like strain,
PH, wind speed, viscosity, vibration etc.
2. Process Control Lab :
The Process control lab has different types of controller gadgets like ON/OFF
controller, Proportional, Proportional + Integral, Proportional + Derivative, PID, P to I & I to P
converters, D.C. position Servo Control System, Temperature, Level, Flow and Pressure Process
stations, Bottle filling system using PLC, SCADA software with DCS, MATLAB
Package.
Two tank system with provision for making them as interacting & noninteracting, Level
transmitters, flow transmitter, Cascade control system, Control valve with positioner and control
valve without positioner.
3. Transducer Lab :
Important transducers such as Displacement, Pressure, Temperature, Flow, Level
transducers are available in this Laboratory.
Students are also motivated to take additional course of studies in the field of
Computer Software also. This will facilitate them to compete with their counterparts in the
software industries.
4. Electronics Devices Lab :
This lab is well equipped with latest Equipments like power supplier (single K dual),
Scientific CRO, audio and high frequency oscillators, digital multimeters. The electronic circuit
simulation software MULTISIM is available for circuit designing.
5. Computer Control Process Lab :
The CCP lab has PLC unit, Bottle filling system using PLC, Data acquistion card, Liquid
level control system, Thermal system, DCS, MATLAB package, SCADA software with DCS,
TUTSIM, CIMPLICITY, VERSAPRO etc.
6. Virtual Instrumentation Lab:
Lab is equipped with licensed LABVIEW Software for 50 users and hardwares for
interfacing with real time environment.

Department of Polymer Technology:
The department of Polymer Technology was established in 1998, at Kamaraj College of
Engineering and Technology with a sanctioned intake of 40 students. It is an Interdisciplinary
field that encompasses several disciplines of Engineering and Basic sciences. The curriculum is
designed around the core topics of science and engineering subjects such as polymer chemistry
polymeric materials, mould & dies design, mold engineering polymer processing, reaction
engineering, polymer characterization; testing and rubber engineering, polymer product design
,polymer blends and composites, and fiber reinforced plastics The program is designed to meet
the challenges in the industry, also to face throughout their professional careers and to provide
highly-developed skills in lifetime learning, planning, problem-solving, communication and
leadership.
M.Tech Polymer technology was started in 2009 with a vision to establish a state of the
art Research Centre. The Department has been recognized as Centre for Research in the year
2010 and 2011 respectively by Anna University of technology,Thirunelveli & Anna University,
Chennai . Ten Research scholars registered for their Ph.D in 2011, under the guidance of Dr.
R.Anbarasan and Dr.C.T.Vijayakumar.
Objectives:
o The objective of this program is to impart quality education to the students
with high level coverage of emerging trends in Polymer technology that will enable

1. Polymer Preparation/Chemistry Laboratory:
In order to know the chemistry of Polymer synthesis, the laboratory has been developed
with highly effective equipment for polymer preparation and also different analytical instruments
like Fourier Transform Infra Red spectroscopy (FTIR), Ultraviolet (UV), Spectrophotometer and
Flame photometer.

2. Polymer Processing Laboratory:

In order to get and efficient practical exposure in the field of Polymer processing, the
laboratory has been fully modernized with sophisticated machineries like fully automatic
Injection Molding Machine, Blow molding machine, semi-Auto Injection Molding Machine,
compression Molding Machine, Extruder, Two Roll Mills etc,

3. Polymer Testing Laboratory:

Testing Lab is equipped with sophisticated instruments like Universal Testing
Machine(UTM), Melt flow index, HDT/VSP, impact Tester, hardness Tester, Thermograveimetric,
Analyzer (TGA), Differential Scanning calorimeter (DSC) Gloss meter etc. for various testing viz.
Mechanical, Thermal, optical and Electrical properties.

Department library:

Our department library has more than 350 books and 150 back issues of various journals
for the access of the students and faculty and is open regularly during lunch break, evening
hours and also during the laboratory timings.

DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY:
Information Technology department was established in the year 2001-2002 and has 12
experienced faculty members expertised in various fields of information Technology. Information
Technology has an excellent infrastructure with 411 systems in the lab. The Department has
experienced faculty members who can exert a dedicated work to produce high caliber
technocrats.
The Department has signed a MOU with National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), Bangalore
on 19.12.2010 for students project at NAL for 3 years. NAL is a constituent Institution under
CSIR, India. It is Indias civil aerospace laboratory with a high level of competence and the
expertise of its scientist is globally acknowledged. One team of our students from 2011 batch
and 2012 batch has completed their academic project at NAL, Bangalore.

Objective:
The program objectives define the skills, knowledge and attributes that the graduates are
expected to possess in addition to tecchnical graduation. These objectives include alumni,
students, Industrial Advisory Committee, faculty and employers. These objectives are consistent

Department of Software Engineering
Software Engineering Department established in the year 2001 was the first
department in our college to offer a Post Graduate Degree M.Sc., Software Engineering.
This is a five year integrated course in which students who have completed just 12

directly and fly out with a Master Degree. The curriculum for this course so well set that after
completion the students acquire a very good knowledge for developing software products that
meet Global Standards of this fast changing world.
Objective:
The main objective of this course is to impart more Practical Knowledge in Software
Development and also to make them more qualified to shine better in actual real life situations
than the students who have done Engineering Degrees.

All the clients are linked with high speed 1.0 Gbps D-link switches and have un interrupted
Internet connectivity.

All the clients and servers are backed by four 10 Kva online UPS with more than 30mnts

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING:
Electrical and Electronics Engineering programme was introduced at Kamaraj College of
Engineering and Technology in the academic year 2002-03. The department offers a four-year
programme for under graduate (UG) students and obtained approval for Post graduate (PG) in
Power System Engineering course in the academic year 2012-13. Graduates of the Electrical and
Electronics Engineering program are grounded in scientific, mathematical, and technical
knowledge through coursework that keeps pace with relevant technologies in the recent trends
and produces graduates who are innovative and capable of becoming leaders in their fields.
Since the commencement of the program, the department has made sincere efforts in the

A. Power system simulation laboratory :
This is Computer laboratory equipped with 25 HCL A350 PRO DESKTOP computers and
WIPRO WSG 10845G Bed type Cabinet with LAN connected. Students can avail the lab at any
time for their research and simulation purpose and can access the internet for more assistance.
We have procured and installed licensed software like PSCAD/EMTDC-5 users and ETAP-7 users.
B. Electrical Machines Laboratory
This laboratory is furnished with all types of DC Machines, single phase and three phase
squirrel cage and slip ring induction motors, Synchronous machines, single-phase and three
phase transformers, suitable starters and loading arrangements for machines, measuring
instruments of all types needed for the laboratory experiments and also sub-standard meters
meant for calibration.
Electrical Machines Laboratory is utilized by all branches of students for lab work as well
as project work. All these facilities are used by the our faculty members for their research and
development work.
C. Power Electronics Laboratory
This laboratory helps the students to study the switching devices, power devices and its
applications in rectifier, inverter, chopper and resonant converter, PWM Techniques for both UPS
and AC Drive applications. This lab is fully equipped with all types of modules like SCR Firing
circuit module, SCR based half and fully controlled converter kit, IGBT based three phase PWM
inverter module, chopper modules based V/I commuted chopper module with firing module,
MOSFET Based step up and Step down Choppers module.
D. Control System Laboratory
This laboratory is equipped with various types of sensors, motors, actuators, as components
of a closed loop system. The feedback loop may comprise hardware / software or combination of
both to function as compensators.
E. Measurement and circuits Laboratory
This Laboratory offers experiments related to various Theorems, characteristics etc. of
Electrical circuits. This lab is involved in all fields, related to measurement and calibration. It is
equipped with all measuring instruments, phase shifting transformers, bridge circuits and
induction coils. Students learn to calibrate the meters, verify theorems, and
understand hysteresis characteristics and other important concepts related to metering.
F. Micro processor and micro controller Laboratory
This lab helps the students to enhance their knowledge about various processors such as
8085, 8031/8051, Micro controller kits with interface, stepper motor interface, ADC & DAC
interfacing units. The features and facilities available in this lab help the students to undergo
their projects as a part of the curriculum and enhance their knowledge about the latest trends
and technologies.

Department library:
Our department library has more than 500 books for the access of the students and
faculty and is open regularly during lunch break, evening hours and also during the laboratory
timings.

Department of Bio- Technology:
Biotechnology is a set of tools that uses cellular and molecular processes to solve the
biological problems or to develop bioproducts. It is an Interdisciplinary field that encompasses
several disciplines of Engineering and Basic sciences. The science disciplines from which
Biotechnology draws heavily are Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Chemistry, Molecular
Biology, Immunology, Ecology and Physiology. On the Engineering side, it leans heavily on
Genetic, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering.
This Department was established in 2002, offering B.Tech Biotechnology, with a vision to
establish a state of the art Research Centre. M.Tech Biotechnology was started in 2009. The
Department has been recognized as Centre for Research in the year 2011. Successively, Five
Research scholars started Ph.D in 2011, under the guidance of our Principal Dr. Anant Achary.
Objectives:
The objective of this program is to impart quality education to the students with
high level coverage of emerging trends in biotechnology that will enable the challenges to be
met and make tomorrow's technological choices.

All the faculty members hold the life time membership of Biotechnological Research
Society of India (BRSI) as well as senior faculty members are the members of Asia Pacific
Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering society (APCBEES) which brings them
access to the latest technical information and research, global networking and opportunities.
Memorandaum of Understanding (MoU):
The Department has signed MoU with Penguin Biolabs, Virudhunagar and Promega
Instruments Pvt ltd, Chennai. This MoU would be helpful for the collaborative research.
Annual Events:
The Department of Biotechnology hosts events such as Bodhgaya and Zoro annually
since 2007. Bodhgaya is a workshop conducted in the month of October for the school
students in order to give hands on training in the techniques in Biotechnology. Zoro is a
National level Conference hosted by the Department every year in the month of February in
accordance with the National Science day.
Co-curricular activities:
The Department of Biotechnology has Genes Association which involves both, faculty
and students of the Department. The events such as guest lectures, demonstrations and
workshops are organized throughout the year by the association.
The ISTE students Chapter actively works out for the benefits of the students by
organizing periodical events such as guest lectures, workshops and webinars.
The Journal club of the Department serves as a forum for motivated researchers and
staffs to gain exposure to current research taking place in India and beyond through seminars,
speaker presentations and discussions. Additionally, the club provides members with the
opportunity to practice reading, interpreting, and presenting scientific journal articles of their
choice, critical skills necessary for success in any research laboratory as well as in any graduate
or professional school.
Sponsored Research Projects:
The faculty members are engaged in Active Research work apart from the Academic Work.5
Sponsored Research Projects have been undertaken by the Faculty members of the Department
with the Sponsorship from various reputed organizations such as, AICTE, DRDO and TNSCST.
Achievements:
The Department of Biotechnology was ranked second by the Sun T.V and A.C. Neilson
survey among the Engineering colleges providing courses in Biotechnology in TamilNadu. In the
All India level rating by the Bio spectrum, a Cyber media publication (Feb08), the Department
received 9th rank in infrastructure and 14th rank in overall performance.
One of our faculty members was awarded as one of the top 100 Engineers of the world for
2010 and International presidents award for iconic achievement from Award board of
International Biographic Centre. One of the faculty members was the recipient of Woman
Innovator Award by L-RAMP. Four of our faculty members have received Young Scientist
Fellowship Award from TamilNadu State Council for Science and Technology. One of our faculty
member received summer research fellowship from Indian Academy of Science. From this
Department, 17 Anna University rank holders emerged so far. The Department of Biotechnology
won the M.A.M.V. Ramasamy Nadar memorial ever rolling shield for zeal of achievements (Best
Department Award) for the past two academic years (2010-2012).

specialized collection of books on biotechnology and related subjects such as Bioprocess
Engineering, Biochemistry, Downstream processing, Environmental Biotechnology, Cell biology,

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING:
The Mechanical Engineering Department was started in the year 2005. The department
offers four year B. E (Mechanical Engineering), and two year M.E (Manufacturing Engineering).
The department has a team of highly qualified, dedicated and motivated faculty and well
equipped laboratories with facilities for UG and PG Programs.
Objective:
The major objective is to impart in-depth knowledge and training in the field of Mechanical
Engineering covering energy, thermal, design, manufacturing, industrial management and
environment.

It has 9 Laboratories and a workshop for imparting practical training to the students.
These Laboratories and Workshop will help students to undertake project works, design and
build machines and equipments. Academic Laboratories are:
1. Basic Workshop:
To develop the basic engineering skills of the students, the workshop is equipped with fitting
tools, carpentry tools, plumbing tools, and moulding and smithy practices.
2. Manufacturing Technology Lab:
To have hands on experience of various manufacturing methods, the lab is
equipped with lathe, shaping machine, drilling machine, milling machine, surface grinding
machine, gear hobbling machine, cylindrical grinding machine, bench grinding machine,
welding machine and supported with measuring instruments like vernier caliper,
micrometer, vernier height gauge, gear tooth vernier, sine bar and sine center with slip
gauges set, bevel protractor etc.
3. Fluid Mechanics Lab:
To understand the theoretical concepts, to study the performance and to determine
the co-efficient constants, the lab is equipped with centrifugal pump test rig, reciprocating
pump test rig, gear pump test rig, pipe friction apparatus, jet pump test rig, Rota meter,
Pelton wheel, Francis turbine, Kaplan turbine, rectangle & V-notch test rig, nozzle meter,
Venturimeter test rig, Pitot tube test rig, hydraulics trainer kit.
4. Thermal Engineering Lab:
One of the major sources of energy we rely on till now is heat. To utilize heat for
constructive purpose many types of equipment are designed and used. To learn the
testing methods and to identify various parameters with respect to thermal science
various equipments like Engine Test Rig, Compressor Test Rig, Steam Boiler, Steam
Turbine, Emissivity Apparatus, Heat Exchangers etc are installed
5. CAD/CAM Lab:
Drawing is the language of engineers. With the advent of computers and the
advances in computing drafting becomes simple and 3D drafting gives better visualization.
It has two sections viz: CNC trainer lathe and a CNC Milling Machine and a two Fanuc
Controller based CNC trainer software. CAD lab is equipped with Pro E wildfire 3.0 (5
User) and Autodesk Mechanical Solution set Software which includes Auto CAD 2008(10
User), Inventor (10 User), Auto CAD Electrical (10 User), Solid Works 2008 (10 User) and
Ansys 11.0 (30 User).
6. Strength of Materials Lab:
This lab is well equipped for testing structural materials including steel, timber,
concrete etc., and contains quality apparatus such as UTM, Hardness Tester, Izod/ Charpy
Impact Tester, Muffle furnace, Spring Testing Machine, Deflection Testing Apparatus.
7. Dynamics Lab:
Mechanical engineering students serves society through the Analysis, Design and
Manufacture of systems at all size scales for that purpose this lab has a Universal
Governor Apparatus, CAM Analyser, Motorized Gyroscope, Vibration table, Turn table
Apparatus, Whirling of shaft, Balancing of rotating mass compound pendulum and various
vibration setup (Torsional, cantilever and Transverse).
8. Metrology & Measurement Lab:
Without metrology we cannot discover, design, test and manufacture so the lab is
equipped with Profile projector, Vibration measuring setup, Displacement measuring
setup, Toolmakers microscope, Auto Collimator & Floating Carriage micrometer for
experimental purpose.
9. Mechatronics Lab:
This lab has pneumatic trainer kit, Process Control trainer kit microcontroller kit and
LABVIEW software to control and enrich the knowledge in the field of automation.
10. Steam Lab:
This lab is equipped with non-IBR boiler, Turbine, separating and Throttling calorimeter.

Auto cad, PRO/E University Plus, Solid Works Education Edition, Ansys Academic Teaching
Introductory, Cam Lab Ver 10.0 Software.

It has a collection of 535 books and is open for students reference. In addition the students

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING:
Civil Engineering is the mother of all engineering disciplines - so
proclaim the proud Civil Engineers. The Department of Civil Engineering in Kamaraj College of
Engineering & Technology was started in the year 2009. It recognizes the need to the time and
provides for the engineering enterprise in the field. The department has experienced faculty
members, with one professor with doctorate, two faculties pursuing Ph.D. and nine faculties with
masters degree in Engineering. The staffs exert a dedicated work to produce high calibre
techrocrats. To supplement the theoretical concepts with practical knowledge of the students,
the following laboratories in the department.

Objective:
The prime objective of the department is to produce competent Engineers with good
academic records and placement during their educational tenure itself. The students will be
provided training during their academic career itself to meet the job requirements after the
completion of their course.

Lab Facilities:
1. Strength of Materials Laboratory
This lab is well equipped for testing structural materials including steel, timber, concrete
etc., and have Universal Testing Machine (UTM) & Compression Testing Machine.
2. Survey Laboratory
This lab is used to study practical applications of surveying. The laboratory is equipped
with the required equipments such as Theodolite, Total Station, levelling and other instruments
and students are taught to run a traverse, and to determine the distances using, chain compass
and plane table. In survey lab, the most versatile equipment Total station is available, which is
very useful for practice and field work.
3. CAD Laboratory
In the Civil Engineering CAD lab drafting packages are used for drawing the plan and
elevation of buildings, along with the 3D models developed in software like Sketchup. The
department has purchased 5 user license of STAADPro software for IV year B.E. CADD lab and
for the project work of the students.
4. Fluid Mechanics & Hydraulics Laboratory:
The Fluid Mechanics Laboratory involves a wide range of basic as well as applied
experimental and theoretical research in fluid mechanics. The activities are focused on the
physical understanding, modeling and manipulation of complex flow and their instabilities. The
main objective of this laboratory is that the students should be able to verify the principles
studied in theory by conducting the experiments.
5. Environmental Engineering Laboratory
This lab is equipped with sophisticated facilities for training students in water quality
studies and management some of the facilities available include Gas chromatograph, Ion
selective Electrode meter, and microbiological investigation facilities. The laboratory is
extensively used in several water quality monitoring projects with special emphasis on fluoride
problem in drinking water.
6. Concrete & Highway Engineering Laboratory
This laboratory has facilities for testing cement, aggregates & asphalt, concrete mix
design, material testing and Non-destructive testing of concrete are the facilities which are being
utilized by construction organizations like PWD, Railways etc., through the consultancy cell.
7. Soil Mechanics Laboratory
This Laboratory houses the equipment for soil testing. This lab is used to determine the
shear parameters, using direct shear apparatus, unconfined compression apparatus, Tri-axial
shear test apparatus. This lab is also used to determine the consistency, plasticity Index, Plastic
limit, shrinkage limit, Liquid limits and relative density of soil.

Department of English:
Technical Communication has been brought to the forefront, since the boom in infotech
industry and globalization. Due to the insistence of the importance of communication skills,
the need for improving English language has gained momentum in recent years. In this
scenario, the contributions of the department of English in imparting communication skills
and functional grammar in English are significant.
Objectives:
To improve the learners oral fluency in English
To help the learners acquire the readiness to speak in English.
To facilitate the development of the learners proficiency in meaningful interaction
To help the learners improve their vocabulary related to specific fields of technology
like TOFLE & GRE.

The Department of English is equipped with two high-tech labs, one for developing
listening skills among first year students which is the need of the hour and the other lab for
making power point presentations by the students. The strength of the department is our
qualified and seasoned faculty. Stress is laid on improving the listening, reading, speaking
and writing skills of the students.
BEC:
We offer BEC course under the guidance of British Council. The business English
Certificate (BEC) examination is conducted by the University of Cambridge. Many Universities
in the United Kingdom recognize BEC Higher as a suitable entry requirement for international
student to business related and other courses of study. Many companies also recognize
BEC examinations as additional qualification during recruitment.
Language Lab:
The ReLAN Pro is a software based media lab thats operates via Local Area Network and
offers a suite of features focusing on computer aided language training. It is an instructional
system that performs and delivers. It is easy for both the Instructor and the student to
navigate and use.
Department Library:
With the whole world becoming a global market and business becoming diverse and
result-oriented, professionals and technocrats are facing newer challenges in communication
everyday. So we provide many books and CDs to students to cultivate their knowledge and to
improve their stock of words.
Department of Mathematics:
Attracting young talent to mathematics seems to be more difficult than solving
a complex equation, throwing up a challenge to the students of India. Our concern is that
students should understand the internal structure of mathematics well enough to not only
engage with its vitality but also relate it to other disciplines and society.
Objective:
To activate students creative and analytical thinking and develop better understanding in
mathematics.
To impart the Engineering based mathematical concepts to the students so that they will
apply the same in their respective field.
Salient features:
To materialize our objectives we started TALC INTIA club in the academic year 2002-
2003.
Every year we organize Maksfete, an intra departmental competition. Academic activities
like Quiz, Puzzle solving etc, Various creative activities like geo-drawing, dumb-c, Treasure hunt
etc and intellectual activities like Sudoku, crossword etc are conducted. These competitions
enlighten and empower students mind in applied Mathematics.
We have Mathematics lab which consists of 40 models including charts which aid the
students in their learning process.

Our department library contains over 150 text books and reference books for the
knowledge updation of the students.
Department of Physics:

Physics can interpret all the natural phenomena and serves as the basis for the
development of science and technology in general. The Department of Physics provides basic
Physics foundation through lecture and laboratory courses to the students of the B.E/B.Tech.
Program.

Objective:

The basic objective of the department is in the pursuit of academic excellence and better
understanding of the concepts both in theory and practical of engineering physics from
fundamental level to its applications.

Salient Features:

The department has a dedicated, experienced and well qualified eight academic staff
members in which four members are doctorates and the remaining four are pursuing their Ph.D.
All the staff members are actively involved in the research encompassing various fields like Nano
technology, Astrophysics, Spectroscopy, etc.

knowledge updation of the students.
Department of Chemistry:

Chemistry department is functioning from the inception of the college. Chemistry is the
most central of all the sciences. Much of our understanding of the material world is based on the
areas of Chemistry such as inorganic, organic and physical. Chemistry plays vital role in
engineering and technological disciplines also. Our department is also approved as a Centre for
Research by Anna University of Technology, Tirunelveli.
Objective:
To impart basic knowledge about chemistry in the first year that will be helpful to understand
concepts in engineering and technology.
Salient Features:
The department consists of eight academic staff with two doctorates. All the staff
members are also actively involved in the research encompassing polymer, catalysis and
synthetic chemistry. The lab is well equipped with glassware, equipments and chemicals to
conduct practicals as per the syllabus. The major analytical equipments include
Spectrophotometer, Flame photometer, etc.

1. Strict silence should be maintained in the Library and the reading room.

3. Student should not carry any book (or) Printed matters into the Library.
4. Students can retain the books for two weeks (i.e. 14 days) from the date of

5. A fine of Rs.1/- will be charged per day for overdue books.
6. Books will be issued and returned in all working days.
7. Books return, renewal transactions are done through barcode scanners.
8. Students should not write or draw anything on/inside the books, Periodicals and
Newspapers.
9. Library hour is allocated to all branch students during class hours.

II. WI-FI CAMPUS:

The whole campus is well connected through wired as well as wireless networks. Students are able to
have access to internet with 14 mbps connectivity. The coverage of Wi-Fi is not only restricted to class
rooms but also extends to all the areas including library, auditorium, cafeteria, and hostels.
Eventually, it enables KCET to switch over to innovative and recent teaching and learning
methodologies.

Water points are available at appropriate places in and around the campus to quench the thirst of the
students. Water, the elixir of Life is purified using the reverse osmosis method, and supplied
hygienically. This in turn, will protect the students from health hazards and help them to lead a

An extension counter of Tamilnadu Mercantile Bank Ltd., has been functioning in our
College since 19.01.2001. Students are advised to deposit their money in the Extension
Counter and pay all College fees through Bank only. For the convenience of students a
ATM Counter is also functioning.

is a common mess is run on dividing system in each hostel separately.

VIII. COLLEGE BUSES :

College buses ply across Madurai, Tirumangalam, Sattur, Kovilpatti, Rajapalayam,
Thalavaipuram, T. Kallupatti, Sivakasi & Aruppukottai.

Buses will start from a fixed place on a fixed time and reach the College campus.
The starting place and the time will be announced by a separate notice. The buses will stop
only at the fixed stopping on the way and not in other places.

10. Extra curricular & Co- Curricular activities:

I. SPORTS ACTIVITIES:

Our College has all the infrastructure facilities for the development of games and
sports activities. Facilities are there for playing a number of indoor as well as outdoor games.
We have Tennis Court, Basket Ball Court with flood light, Volley ball court, Ball badminton court,
Badminton Court, Foot ball field, Hockey field, Cricket field and Track & field.
A Gym and an Indoor Hall is available in our College for both boys & girls to improve
their health. Intramural matches are held regularly. Students are encouraged to take
part in inter-collegiate tournaments and in the TIES (Inter Engineering College Sports) every
year.
To strengthen the physical and mental strength of our students, physical education hour
(one hour per week) made compulsory for first year students.
Yoga Classes and Yoga Demonstration have also been arranged. Yoga experts are invited to
the campus and they give training to students to do Asana and Yoga.

II. PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME :

Students must have multifaceted development. With this aim, many steps have been
taken to develop their personality. Special lectures by eminent experts are arranged every
month to shape the personality of the students. Students are expected to prepare a
paper, based on the topics dealt in the Personality Development Classes.

III. STUDENTS COUNSELLING BY PROFESSIONAL COUNSELLER:

Every week one hour is allotted for counseling. About 20 students are allotted to each teacher.
In the counseling classes, the teachers probe into the students problems and
grievances and they help them to overcome them. Since there is only limited number of
students, the teachers have close rapport with their wards. Besides counseling, students are
given good training in presenting papers and participation in seminars. Students are allowed to
present papers on their favorite topics. They are encouraged to ask questions and get
answers from the student presenting the paper. They used to have group discussion also.

IV. COMPUTER COURSES :

AutoCAD course is conducted for our students.

V. HINDI COURSE :

Since we have many employment opportunities in North India, learning a Regional
language has become a necessary aspect now a days. We teach written Hindi in first year and
Spoken Hindi in final year and students are benefited by this to a greater extent.

VI. FINE ARTS CLUB :

Ms.G. Vijayalakshmi, Asst. Professor / English is In charge of Fine Arts Club.

Music and dance wash away the dust of our soul. The fine arts club functions as
a separate unit (Kalashrusti) to tap out the hidden potentials of our students.They are
encouraged to take part in various intercollegiate competitions conducted by reputed
institution and prestigious club.

VII. TECH - BEATS AND TECH - BAND :

Dr. B. Karthikeyan, Associate professor in Physics / First Year Coordinator is the
In-charge of our college orchestra Tech-Beats.
Tech-Beats" consists of skilled personnel in instruments and vocal solo and the group performs
musical programs on important occasions to delight the audience.
Tech-Band comprises trained musicians and masters. Ceremonies and functions are
marked by their performance.
VIII. GARDENING CLUB :

Mr.S. Karthikumar, Asst. Professor / BT is Incharge of Gardening Club.

To create a sylvan and idyllic backdrop in our College campus, the gardening
club was launched in 1999. As per the proposal of planting as many as thousand
saplings, a year,in our campus, we are carrying it out successfully. A luxuriant lush
green lawn had been laid to add hue and charm to the beautiful landscape by the
extensive help rendered by our mentor Prof.G. Shanmugam. A line of thick
bushes trimmed artistically is fringing the gardens by the arduous effort of the gardening
club which provide a salubrious and conducive atmosphere for both the teach and
the taught. We are taking all out efforts to make our campus eco-friendly and a
haven for oxygen generation.

IX. Red Ribbon Club (RRC)
Mr. A. Rajavel, Asst. Professor / EIE is incharge of Red Ribbon Club
Red like Love, as a symbol of passion and tolerance for those affected. Red like
blood, representing the pain suffered by the many people who have died of AIDS.
Red like the anger over the helplessness we are facing for a disease which still has no
cure. Red as a sign of warning to not carelessly ignore one of the biggest
problems of our time. About 100 volunteers are there in our college RRC Unit.
The volunteers can be from first & Second year only. They must attend celebrating
life program in first year.


X. PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB:
To develop students skill in photography, this club has been started. Students are
advised to become members of this Club and spend their leisure time learning photography.


XI. ROTARACT CLUB :

Mr. R.Ari chandran, Asst. Professor / Civil is In charge of Rotaract Club.

Rotaract wing in our College was installed on 16.07.99. It conducts many
useful programmes for the students.

XII. BLOOD DONORS CLUB :

Mr.K.Agathiyan, Asst. Professor / PT is In charge of Blood Donors Club.

Let no one die for want of blood is the motto of this club. Blood Donation
Camps are organised in our campus by Virudhunagar Medical Association, V. Dhanasamy
- Parimala Devi Medical Trust Blood Bank, Virudhunagar, Government Head Quarters
Hospital, Virudhunagar and Primary Health Centre, Kallikudi. Students and Staff
members who donate blood are honoured with certificates and mementoes.

XIII. N.S.S. :

Mr.A. Rajavel, Asst. Professor / EIE is Incharge of N.S.S.

The National Service Scheme was started in our College in January 2000. Ist
year students are encouraged to become members. N.S.S. conducts technical
courses for rural growth, trekking programme, 10 day special camp etc. Volunteers
celebrate Teachers day, NSS day etc.

XIV. N.C.C. :

Mr.S. Senthil, Asst. Professor / Mech. is Incharge of N.C.C.

N.C.C. Wing of our College was started in 27.10.2003. Cadets take active
participation in the regular parades, Firing. They have won many prizes in the Annual
Training camps. As a part of adventurous activity, the cadets are undertaken to Trekking
and cycling Expedition every year. This year 17 cadets have passed in the B-certificate
Exams & 6 cadets have passed in the C Certificate Exam held by the Ministry of
Defence. NCC opens the job in the Indian Army to enable them to become a disciplined
citizen.
XV. YOUTH RED CROSS :

Mr.K. Agathiyan, Asst. Professor / PT is Incharge of Youth Red Cross.

The Red Cross is an international organisation meant for humanitarian
services. It is a non-religious, non-political and a non-sectarian international body.
YRC is a part of the Indian Red Cross Society; it was inaugurated in August,
2003 with well defined objectives such as :

Protection of Health and Life
Service to the sick and the suffering by organising
o Various health camps such as Eye Camps and health awareness etc.
o Fire safety programmes to the mess workers
o Stress Management
o Blood Donation

The main objective of the Youth Red Cross of our college is to donate blood. A
well defined Blood Donors' Club functions in our college and it takes care of
blood grouping, conducting blood donation camps, etc., On an Average 80-100 units of
blood are donated every semester to the Dhanasamy Parimala Devi trust, Virudhunagar.

XVI. LEO CLUB :

Ms.D. Vijayalakshmi, Associate Professor / M.Sc. is In charge of leo club.

To promote service activities among the youth community and to develop the
individual qualities of LEADERSHIP, EXPERIENCE and OPPORTUNITY, LEO Club of
Kamaraj College of Engineering & Technology was inaugurated on March 31st,
2003, sponsored by Lions Club of Virudhunagar.

This scheme provide financial assistance to the poor and meritorious students
belonging to minority communities to enable them to pursue professional and technical

Beedi Employees Scholarship:

The Labour welfare commission attached to the Union ministry of labour
will provide scholarship assistance for beedi, mine and cinema workers children higher

13. CONTINUOUS EVALUATION:
It is often said that our educational system is examination oriented and students
concentrate on studies only at the time of the annual examination, i.e., at the end of the year.
To avoid this, semester system was introduced. In our College, along with the semester
system, continuous evaluation is followed. Students are given weekly assignments in all
subjects. As soon as a unit of a subject is covered, an internal test will be conducted
on that unit. These tests are conducted every week. Thus the internal tests make the
students study their lessons unit by unit without overburdening them. The marks, got
by the students on weekly assignments and weekly tests, go for the internal assessment.


14. DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE :

A disciplinary committee has been formed to look after students discipline.
Dr.M.Vasanthi, Dr. Vinayagamoorthy, Dr.Asha, Er.Suresh Babu and respective Department
HODs will be its members.The counsels the erring students and suggest disciplinary action to
ensure almost discipline in the campus.
15. RULES & REGULATIONS:

Besides imparting technical education, special emphasis is laid on building character and
discipline. Our College has been maintaining a high standard discipline. Breaking of any rules,
framed by the College authorities from time to time, will be dealt with severe action.

I RAGGING AN OFFENCE

Ragging in any form, at any place or time is a cognizable offence that
will lead to severe punishment including getting summarily expelled from the
college / institution / University.

Any violation will result in suspension / dismissal from the hostel /
college. In this regard, the special secretary to Government, Higher Education
Department, Secretariat, Chennai has given the following sections in respect of the
Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1997.
Section 4:

Whoever directly or indirectly commits, participates in, abets or propagates
Ragging within or outside any educational institution, shall be punished with
imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years and shall also be liable to a fine
which may extend to ten thousand rupees.
Section 5:

Any students convicted of an offence under section 4 mentioned above shall also
be dismissed from the educational institution and such student shall not be admitted in
any other educational institution.

II CARE OF THE COLLEGE PROPERTY:

Students should not damage the college property. They should not
scribble any thing on the green board, table, furniture and walls.

Cost of damages to property movable or immovable will be recovered
from the students.

Students are advised to switch off the fans and lights when they leave
the class rooms.
III CLEANLINESS OF THE CAMPUS:

Waste papers and packets should only be thrown into the dust bins.

Writing on walls, pillars, Toilets, bathrooms, furniture and class room boards is
strictly prohibited .
Students who buy soft drinks, chocolates etc in paper packets from the canteen
or Tuck shop are informed to dispose the empty packets / papers into the dustbins.

IV DRESS CODE:

Students should wear their ID Card when they enter the Campus
Students should decently dressed.
Boys should not wear Tight & Short shirts, Jeans pant, pants with designs,
T-Shirts and shirts with write-ups and designers dress.
Boys should tucked in their pants and shirts inside the campus.
Girls should wear only churidhar. On special occasion girls can come to College
in Saree with prior permission from the Head of the Department.
Avoid wearing churidhars with tight fits / short tops, designers dress, sleeveless
tops etc.
Students should attend the laboratories and workshops classes only in their
uniforms and wear shoes.



V CLASS ROOM MANNERS:


Students should not come late to class.( Late comers should get permission
slip from the Principal / HOD )
They should not absent themselves without prior permission.
Strict silence should be maintained in the classroom. Students should
occupy their allotted seats.
Students are not permitted to sit inside the class room closing the door in
the absence of the staff.
Throwing paper arrows and small articles are forbidden.
Students should not shout, hoot or whistle during class hours and in
College functions and maintain strict discipline within the Campus and students
should occupy their allotted seat.
Chewing bubble gum, chocolate and any eatable item inside the class room
should be avoided.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

Being a co-educational institution, the students should maintain dignity and
decorum with the opposite gender. Free conversation with the opposite
gender is strictly forbidden. Cracking jokes and passing comments on the
opposite gender is an offence.
Students are not allowed to bring their guests to College during the working hours.
They should not leave the campus during working hours. If anybody wants
to leave the campus, he/she should get the out-pass from the Head of the
Department or the Principal.
They are advised to board the outside buses in an orderly way and
without making a noise.
They are warned not to lean on the parapet wall in the first floor facing
the main entrance.
While using the staircase, students should ascend and descend in a
disciplined way
Any form of celebration like birthday parties is not allowed inside the
College campus.
Formation of any clubs or association without the permission of the Principal is
strictly prohibited.
During leisure hours, girls are advised to remain in the ladies waiting room
and the boys in the class rooms. They should not loiter along the roads
inside or around the campus or stand in verandahs and under the shade of trees.
Mobile phones are strictly prohibited for students within the
College campus.
Firing crackers, even during festival times is strictly banned.


Hostel Rules & Regulations:

1. Keep the room, verandah neat and tidy.

2. Maintain an eco- friendly environment.

3. Do not stay in the day scholars house.

4. Switch off the fans, lights etc. when not in use
5. Share your suggestions and difficulties with the Warden / Deputy
Warden either personally or thro suggestion note book.
6. Avoid involving in ragging of any form as it is a punishable crime. It is strictly
forbidden.
7. Do not damage the hostel property. Do not scribble any thing on the
table, furniture and walls. The cost of damages to movable /immovable
property will be recovered from the students.

8 Do not fire crackers, even during festival times in the hostel.

9. Do not invite day scholars and guests other than parents into the hostel
without prior permission

10. Do not enter the hostel,during working hours of college without permission.
11. Avoid using Mobile phones in the campus.
Note: Smoking , consuming alcoholic drinks, using tobacco products etc. are strictly
forbidden.

Special Instruction for Boys:

Present in the hostel by 8.00 p.m.
Return to the hostel before 10.00 pm.on Saturdays.
Adhere to the study hours srictly (Study hours is between 8.15 P.M. and10.30
P.M.)

* Return to hostel by 6.00 p.m. after coming back from home on weekends.
* use the Laptops only in third and fourth year of your study.

Mess:

1. Wastage of food is an unsocial deed .it should be avoided.
2. Issue of token during lunch hour is a proof of hostellers identity.Howevr if
students do not get their mess token from the Mess office, the mess bill
amount will be deducted from their account.

3.The hostel students must submit their mess reduction forms to the mess office
well in advance.

4. Reduction is not eligible for late submission and for less than five days.

5. The students should give their mess reduction / leave form / only in the prescribed
forms.

6. If a student does not take any food from the mess on any special circumstances, it
should be intimated to the mess office.

7. If a student does not take food from the mess for a long duration without the
prior intimation to the office, he will be fined. This is to minimize the wastage
of food.

8. Students should vacate the Mess hall on or before the allotted time.

9. Exchange of mess tokens among students is strictly forbidden.



Bus Rules:
Students should bring bus pass
Students are advised to come to the stopping well in advance
Students should not shout, hoot or whistle while travelling in college bus
If any misbehavior or makes a noise or whistles, he / she will be immediately dropped out
of the bus
Students should not bring electronic gadgets .
