Unit 1: Pre-production LO1

Comprehensively explain and present to a quality that reflects near-professional

standards fully detailed requirements and sources of requirements for a specific
media production

TASK

From all the pre-production you have carried out over the past year you need to pick one
and complete the following task.

You will need to show an excellent understanding of the requirements for the proposed
production and will be able to explain fully why each element is required.

You will give detailed explanations of how these requirements will be sourced and give full
consideration to codes of practice and regulatory issues.

From the table below you need to explain why each element was important to your chosen
production and detail how you would source them.

For example

Type Importance Sourcing
Finance:
Sources of finance

Equipment
Transport
Talent
Crew
Materials
Facility hire

Importance
It is important to have finances in place before production starts, as every producer needs to pay
for Equipment used such as Cameras, tripods, green screen, lighting and sound. For an Advert
production for example, a producer may also need materials such correct costumes, items for
correct mise-en-scene and talent in order to fulfil the desired effect. Crew will also be needed
such as cameraman, soundman lighting engineer researchers editors and runners in order to
produce a professional looking advert.
Once all is complete facilities such as editing suits and postproduction equipment will be needed
and these cost a lot of money.

Materials can be sourced from high street shops, retail outlets or studio
Props departments
Transport can be sourced via Transport for London http://www.tfl.gov.uk,
National Rail http://www.nationalrail.co.uk, hertz car hire etc..
A days travel card in London will cost the producer 12 per person.

You can either create your own table or upload this one to Weebly and
complete. Either ay, a table like the one below needs to be used.

Finance:
Sources of
finance

Equipment
Transport
Talent
Crew
Materials
Facility hire

Importance
The finances are very important as they need to be sorted out at the very start so
that you know that you are definitely able to cover the costs of each and every
part of the production.

The equipment is quite important when sorting out the finances as the spending
allowance that you leave to sort out the equipment directly affects the both the
amount and quality of the equipment that you are able to buy.

The transport is also fairly important when sorting out the finances as the
amount of money that you leave for the transport affects what locations you are
able to go to.

The talent is important to finance as the more money you leave for this, bigger
the actors you are able to use for the production, which is significant if you want
the production be a big success.

The crew is also fairly important too, as the crew that has more experience and
produces better quality content for the production, but tend to cost more as well.

The materials are another important thing to finance properly, as it is needed to
get the correct costumes, props and mise-en-scne for the production.

Hiring facilities is also important as you will need to be able to hire facilities that
have all of the correct equipment and software for all of the editing and post
production process in general which can also become quite expensive due to all
of the things that are needed at this point in the production process.

Importance
Deadlines are important as it makes sure that each part of the project gets a good
amount of time to be spent on it.

The availability of equipment is important as it allows you to have all of the
equipment needed available to you, when it comes round to using it.
The availability of personnel is also important as it means that you are able to
have enough people at your disposal throughout the entire time the project is
running.

Facilities: Production equipment
Post-production equipment facility
houses

Importance
It is important to have facilities open to you so that when it comes to filming and
recording your project, you have all of the equipment you need at your disposal.

allows you to have all of the equipment and software that you need when it
comes to the editing and post-production part of your project.

Materials: Original materials,
Archive and library materials
Photo-library materials
Sound library materials,
Internet
Audio
Script
Interviews
Costumes

Importance
Original material is important as you are able to make to exactly how it needs to
be for the project that you are working on.
Archive and library materials are materials that have been made by other people,
and so it may not be suited exactly to the project that you are working on, but it
allows you to have material of something that you would not normally be able to
easily get, especially if you are on a budget.
Photo library materials are important as they allow you to use professionally
made photos in your project, this is important as It allows you to use photos that
you might not normally be able to take or reproduce in the way that is wanted.
Sound library materials are important as they allow you to use pre-made sounds
that you are not able to make or reproduce for whatever reason.
The internet is important as it allows you to research each and every part of the
project properly.
Audio is important as it is one of the main parts of the production of a project,
and the project cannot be completed without it.
A script is important as it allows the talent and crew to know what is happening
during each part of the project.
Interviews are important as they allow you to know that the talent and crew that
you are hiring are suitable for the project, able to produce work to a professional
standard, and are just generally worth hiring for the production of the project.
Costumes are important as they allow the talent to explicitly be their character in
the project, letting them look the part, as well as sound and act the part.

Locations: Recces
Limitations and risks:
Distance, access, cost, weather

Importance
Recces are important as they allow you to check possible shoot locations and
figure out how suitable each location would be to shoot at. This would concern
each and every aspect of the shoot, from making sure that there would be access
to all of the necessary facilities to making sure that there would not be any
problems or issues with the lighting or sound.

The locations for each of the shoots are important but there are limitations and
risks that can affect where you are able to shoot each scene.
The distance of how far away the location is has to be put into consideration; if
the location is too far away then it could make it difficult to get all of the crew
and cast there as well as all of the equipment that would be needed, this is
especially true if there is a tight time frame to stick by.
How accessible the location is may also affect whether a location is suitable or
not. If the location is only accessible by plane or by boat, then it is going to make
it harder to get all of the people and all of the equipment to the location, making
it less suitable.
The cost of getting to the location also needs to be considered. If a location costs
considerably higher to get to than some of the other locations that you could go
to, then the location that costs a lot could be seen as a bit more unsuitable.
The weather may also affect the suitability of a location, if a location has quite
serious weather conditions occurring over the time that you would be shooting,
or even if it is in contrast to what you want then it could make that certain
location unsuitable.
Codes of
practice and
regulation:
Location permissions
Clearances
Copyright
Health and safety
Insurance

Importance
It is important to get location permissions, so that you are allowed to film at the
location that you want. This is helpful as the most suitable locations are often on
private land where you would need a permission slip so that you would not get
stopped and accused of trespassing in the middle of filming.
Getting your production cleared is important as it shows that anyone or anything
that appears in the production in some way has given permission for it to be it to
be shown. Once the production has got all of its clearances it can be shown
publicly. While if the production has not got all of the clearances it needs, then
the production would have to be taken down and would not be allowed to be
shown publicly. You would also probably get sued as well for not getting
permission for the thing that you did not get clearance for.
It is Important to have all of your work copyrighted as that way you will be able
to own that work so that no one else can take it and claim the benefits over it if it
becomes successful, which can happen If you did not copyright the work
originally, even If you are not going to carry that ide/work on.
Health and safety is important as it makes sure that everything that you do while
producing your work is safe so that you are not i any unnecessary danger, which
can easily happen if you do not follow the health and safety codes.
Insurance is important because if any of your equipment becomes damaged or
broken, even if it is accidentally, you are able to get some money back from it
allowing you to go out and buy a replacement. Otherwise if you don't have all of
the equipment insured then if it gets broken or damaged then it would be an
unnecessary waste of the productions finances.
