Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate: Heather Maddox Date: June 24, 2014

Grade and Topic: Grade 3 Science Length of Lesson: 2 hours
Mentor Teacher: Dr. Carmen Weaver School: University of Memphis IDT 3600

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:
This lesson is part of a unit that focuses on weather.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Given a Prezi, students will identify the four types of clouds and characteristics of each with 50/50 on
the rubric.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
SPI 0307.8.2 Match major cloud types with specific atmospheric conditions
ISTE standards
Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and
processes using technology.

MATERIALS:
Computers, cloud handout, science books, Prezi accounts for each student

http://eo.ucar.edu/webweather/cumulus.html - cumulus clouds

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
Students have been studying types of weather and the atmosphere. Our study of clouds is a continuation
of the weather unit. Students should be able to define: cirrus, cumulus, nimbus, and stratus at the end of
this lesson.
Students should be able to match the name of each cloud with a picture.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction:
The teacher will ask the students if they have ever laid down on the grass on a nice summer day to gaze
at the clouds. She will ask the students to describe some of the clouds that they have seen. Then the
teacher will tell the students that there are different types of clouds and they all have names. She will
inform them that they would be discovering what each type of cloud looks like.

Procedures:
Day 1
1. The teacher will hand out a list of vocabulary words: cumulus, stratus, nimbus, and cirrus. She will
explain that these are cloud types that they will be defining.
2. Students will be given an opportunity to visit websites about each of the four different types of
clouds. The teacher will give the students the list of websites to be visited.
3. Students will write down three facts about each type of cloud on a handout provided by the teacher.
4. Students who are not working on the computer will be reading the assigned chapter in the Science
book.
Day 2
1. Students will be given directions on how to create a simple Prezi presentation.
2. Students are to create a simple Prezi on the four types of clouds. Students should include a picture
and definition of each type of cloud. Students need to make note of which clouds produce rain in
some way in their Prezi.

Closure:
To close this lesson students, will present their Prezi presentations and tell what their favorite could type
is and why.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
Students will be assessed using this rubric
Handout completed 25 points
Prezi completed 25 points

MODIFICATIONS:
I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those
ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this
particular lesson.

Please visit each of the websites that are listed. They are bookmarked on the computer for you. You must write
down three facts about each type of cloud. Pay special attention to which clouds produce precipitation. This
information is what you will use to create your Prezi.
