Fig.3.30 (a) shows the representation of hot and cold streams graphically. Hot streams are
conventionally drawn from left to right with arrow head pointing to right. Near the supply
temperatureatextboxhavingthestreamNo.isplacedandsupplytemperatureiswritten.Near
thearrowheadthetargettemperatureiswritten.TheCPvalueofthestreamisalsoindicated.
Coldstreamsaredrawnfromrighttoleftwitharrowheadpointingleft.Atextboxcontaining
thestreamnumberisplacedatthesupplytemperatureend.Supplytemperatureiswrittennear
theboxandthetargettemperatureiswrittenattheotherextremeendhavingarrowhead.The
CPvalueisalsoindicatedforthestream.Fig.3.30(b)showscoldandhotstreamswithhotpinch
and cold pinch values written in both the sides of a vertical line. The CP values of different
streams are written near to the stream at one end and the H values in other end. For hot
streamsHvaluesareveandforcoldstreamitis+ve.

Thegridisusedtorepresentheatexchangenetworkmoreconveniently.Theimportantdrawing
rulesofthegridrepresentationsare:

Hotstreams(whichrequirecooling)aredrawnatthetoprunninglefttoright
Coldstreams(whichrequireheating)aredrawnatthebottomrunningfromrightto
left.
Aheatexchangerisrepresentedbyaverticallinejoiningtwoblankcirclesonthe
streamsbeingmatched.Theheatexchangerloadisconvenientlywrittenunderthe
lowerbalingcircle.
Heaters(H)andCoolers(C)canberepresentedinacircleinsidewrittenHorConthe
streambeingheatedorcooled.
Temperaturesareputonthegridasshowntoalloweasycheckontheterminal
approachtemperatureofeachunit.
Hotstreamsaregroupedtogetheratthetopandrunlefttorightfromtheirsupplyto
targettemperatures.Coldstreamsbeneathruncountercurrent.
Pinchdivisionisrepresentedinthediagrambydividingthestreamdataatthe
appropriatetemperatures,rememberingtoseparatehotandcoldstreamsbyTmin

TheGridrepresentationforthegivenproblem,whichincludestwohot(H1&H2)andtwocold
(C3&C4)streamsareshowninFig.3.41
