Short-circuit current test

Short-circuit current test
On-load tap changer type: V 111 200 Y, V 111 200 D, V 1 200
with change-over selector
The type test was performed in accordance with IEC Publication 21411989, sub-clause
8.3.
The short-circuit current test was performed on a complete selector switch V 111 200 D.
Due to the fact that the current paths which carry current continuously have the Same
design this test also applies to all above-mentioned on-load tap changers with change-
over selector.
All selector switch contacts with various designs and which carry current continuously
and all change-over selector contacts were connected in series in the test circuit. The
current supply was connected to the selector switch's input and output terminals.
Fig. 1 shows the arrangement and measurement of the test circuit.
The test was performed in transformer oil at ambient temperature. Prior to the test the
contacts were switched 5 times at no-load conditions.
The test current was measured by an oscillograph via shunt. The test duration was
controlled by a barre1 controller. The oscillograms show the exact current duration and
the current values.
For technical reasons the short-circuit current test was performed in two steps at the
following values:
a) thermical short-circuit current test corresponding to the rated
short-circuit current
Ikd = 4.3 kA eff - 3 applications, each with a current duration of 3 s.
b) dynamical short-circuit current test corresponding to the rated peak current
I , = 70.2 kA (peak value of the first half wave) - 3 applications
Fig. 2 shows the corresponding oscillograms.
After the short-circuit current test the selector switch and its circuit were thoroughly
checked over. The contacts on the selector switch were in good working condition and
the parts carrying current showed no signs of mechanical distortion.

According to IEC 21411989, sub-clause 8.3 a total of 3 applications with short-circuit
current lasting 2 s each is specified in order to prove the short-circuit strength of the
current paths carrying current continuously. For a tap changer with rated through-current
of 200 A the minimum short-circuit current specified is 3.0 kA while the peak value
should be 2.5 times the r.m.s. short-circuit current.
The rated short-circuit strength of the selector switch with change over selector

- dynamical short-circuit current Is = 10 kA peak
is proved by the above test. This strength is considerably higher than the minimum
values specified by IEC 21 411 989.
