Instructional Technology Lesson Plan

Date: March 17, 2014

Grade: Seven
Subject: Instructional Technology
Duration: 1hour
Lesson Topic: Networking
Sub-Topic: Bus Topology
Specific Objectives: After viewing a video entitled Bus Topology, students should be able to:
i) Define the term Bus Topology.
ii) Identify at least two components of the bus network topology.
iii) Explain the process that takes place in the network.
After viewing a power point presentation entitled Advantages and Disadvantages of Bus
Topology, students should be able to:
i) State at least two advantages of the network.
ii) State at least two dis-advantages of the network.

Content Summary: The bus topology is the simplest and most common. It is often used when a
network installation is small, simple, or temporary. It is a Passive topology. This means that
computers on the bus only listen for data being sent, they are not responsible for moving the data
from one computer to the next. In an active topology network, the computers regenerate signals
and are responsible for moving the data through the network. On a bus network, all the computer
are connected to a single cable. When one computer sends a signal using the cable, all the
computers on the network receive the information, but only one (Addressee) accepts it. The rest
disregard the message. The network is small and will not be frequently reconfigured.

Introduction

Introduce lesson to students by allowing them
to watch a video entitled: Bus Topology.

Watch video entitled Bus Topology.
Development

Engage students in discussion about video, by
asking students to give the definition of the
term bus topology.

Respond to question
Expected response: Bus topology refers to a
single cable that connects all the work stations,
servers, printers and other devices on the
network.
Put students in groups of four to brainstorm at
least two advantages and dis advantages of the
bus network topology.
Work in groups to come up with two
advantages and dis advantages of bus network
topology.
Allow students to view power point
presentation entitled bus network topology to
confirm or correct the advantages and dis
advantages they have given.
View power point presentation to confirm or
correct their responses given.
Engage students in a discussion based on the
power point presentation to see how much they
have recalled from the presentation.

Participate in discussion by responding or
asking questions.

Present to students a model of the network
topology in order for them to identify the
different sections of the model.
Raise their hands and wait for
acknowledgement from the teacher in order for
them to identify the different sections of the
model.
Evaluation: The lesson went well, the students answered questions asked, and they worked well
in their assigned groups. This lesson catered to the visual, audio and tactile learners.
