Session 60: Jesus Calms Two Storms

Biblical Truth: Jesus’ power and authority is greater than both physical and spiritual powers.
Fanning the Flame Question: Has there ever been a storm in your life that Jesus calmed?

Large Group
Show “Play All” for session 60 on the DVD. If you want to lead a discussion after each section of the video, show “The
Spark,” “Fanning the Flame,” and “Combustion” separately. As an alternative, replace “Combustion” by using “Story Outline,
Session 60” to present the story of Mark 4:35–5:20. If desired, distribute copies of “Listening Guide 60” to the students to
complete during “Combustion.”

Small Groups
(Note: Questions or activities that are more appropriate for younger youth or for older youth are marked by “YY” or “OY”
respectively.)
Preparation: Listen to “Jesus Calms Two Storms” by playing this CD in any CD player. Read Mark 4:35–5:20 and
“Background for the Bible Passage, Session 60.”
1. Begin by asking: How do you react to people with power or authority?
2. Show “Time Line 60” and point out where today’s story fits on the time line.
3. Direct students to briefly review Mark 4:35-41. Using the following questions, lead students to discuss the story of Jesus
calming the wind and the waves.
•Why was Jesus able to sleep through the storm that caused the disciples to fear for their lives?
•Why did the disciples, who had been following Jesus, say “Who is this?” (verse 41) (OY)
•What effect do you think this event had on the disciples’ faith?
4. Guide students to briefly review Mark 5:1-20 and to discuss the story of Jesus calming the demon-possessed man.
•How did the demons identify Jesus?
•What changes were evident in the man after Jesus healed him?
•How did the townspeople react to what Jesus did?
•How did the healed man react to Jesus?
5. Use the following questions to lead students to think about how Jesus’ power can affect their lives.
•In each event, who feared Jesus and who looked to Jesus to calm their fears?
•What do you do with your fears?
•What are some situations in your life that you could trust Jesus to take care of?
•What evidence have you seen of Jesus’ power in the lives of other people? (OY)
•What evidence of Jesus’ power have you seen in your own life?
•What do you think Jesus would change in your life if you asked Him to throw out everything that’s evil?
•Are there times that you see storms in other people’s lives like the boy in the “Spark” and wish that you could do
something to help?
•How do you think Jesus’ power can help you to do good?
•In light of Jesus’ power and authority, how do you think He wants you to react to Him?

Options
1. Guide students to show various reactions to Jesus’ power by preparing and presenting a news interview with each of the
following eyewitnesses:
(1) One of the disciples who was in the boat with Jesus.
(2) One of the men who tended the pigs.
(3) The man who was healed from being possessed by demons.
2. Pre-enlist one of your students, or a special guest, to give a testimony of how Jesus’ power has changed his or her life.
(OY)
3. Distribute copies of “The Power of Jesus.” Lead students to work as a group to complete the lists. Then guide students to
work individually and prayerfully to complete the rest of the handout. Direct them to fold the completed handouts and lay
them at the foot of a cross or picture of a cross which you have provided.
