One RAF OCU and four transport squad-
rons operate the RAF's 56 Argosy C.l
tactical freighters. Span, 115ft; length, 88ft

233kt; range, with 20,0001b payload, 930

101 turbofans). Four RN strike squadrons
now operate Buccaneer 2s, while Lossie-
mouth OCU has mixed S.l/2 complement.
Sixteen S.50s with BS.605 auxiliary rockets
were delivered to South Africa. The RAF
is to.operate some 70 Royal Navy aircraft,
in addition to further production of 26.

Hawker Siddeley Chipmunk (One 145 h.p.
R-R Gipsy Major 10). The RAF has rein-
troduced the Chipmunk for primary train-
ing, and the DHC-1 is also widely used by
many other air forces. Span, 34ft 4in;

speed, 120kt.
Hawker Siddeley Comet C.4 (Four
10,5001b Rolls-Royce Avon 350 turbojets).
The five Comet 4s which have been in
RAF service for some years are to be
phased out at a fairly early date. The
RAF Comet 2s were retired in 1968. Span,
114ft lOin; length, 118ft; max gross.
162,0001b; max cruise, 470kt; range with
19,6301b payload, 2,250 run.
Hawker Siddeley Devon C.l (Two 340 hp
R-R Gipsy Queen 70 engines). The RAF
still has about 30 Devons similar to the
civil Dove, while the RN has 13 or so.
Many serve with foreign air forces. Span,
57ft; length, 39ft 3in; max gross, 8,5001b;
max cruise, 155kt.
Hawker Siddeley Dominie T.l (Two
3,0001b Rolls-Royce Viper 520 turbojets).
Twenty navigational trainer versions of the
HS.125 business jet fly with the RAF as
the Dominie. Span, 47ft; length, 47ft 5in;
max gross, 21,2001b; max cruise, at 31,000ft,
443kt.
Hawker Siddeley Gnat T.l (One 4,4001b
Rolls-Royce Orpheus 101 turbojet). The
Gnat will remain as the standard RAF
advanced trainer until the arrival of the
Jaguar in about 1973. Span, 24ft; length,
31ft 9in; max gross, 9,1071b; max speed,
Mach 0.95.
Hawker Siddeley Harrier (One 19,2001b
Rolls-Royce Pegasus Mk 101). First of 90
RAF Harriers entered service with No 1
Squadron, Air Support Command in 1969.
Thirteen T.2 two-seaters will also be built.
Engine development for the world's first
V/STOL strike aircraft will reach 22,0001b
thrust. Twelve ordered by US Marines,
with production of 100 by McDonnell
Douglas planned. Span, 25ft 3in; length,
45ft 8in; max gross (STOL), 20,0001b
approx; max war load, 6,0001b; max speed
(clean), 625kt-p]us; ferry range, 2,000 n.m.
Hawker Siddeley Hunter FGA.9 (One
10,0001b Rolls-Royce RA.28 Avon Mk 207
turbojet). Although out of production for
a decade, the Hunter has been sold in
quantity in recent years from refurbished
ex-Belgian and Dutch stocks. These sales
include Chile (25), Qatar (6), Abu Dhabi
(12), Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore (20).
Ground attack Hunters are still operated
by the RAF, but are beginning to be super-
seded by Harriers and Jaguars will finally
' replace them from 1972. Span, 33ft 8in;
length (FGA.9), 45ft l l i n; max gross,
26,6001b; max level speed, Mach 0.95;
tactical radius, with two 1,0001b bombs and
two drop tanks, 198 n.m., lo-lo-lo; ferry
range, 1,610 n.m.
Hawker Siddeley Hunter T.66 (One
10,5001b Rolls-Royce Avon 203/207 turbo-
jet). Many Hunter airframes of earlier
marks have been refurbished and up-rated
to two-seat T.66 standard for India and
Jordan, Iraq (T-69) and Kuwait (T-67).
Span, 33ft Sin; length, 48ft l l i n; max
gross, 24,0001b; max speed, Mach 0.93.
Hawker Siddeley 801 Nimrod MR.1 (Four
11,5001b Rolls-Royce RB.168 Spey Mk 250
turbofans). Thirty-eight of these MR
developments of the Comet are on order
Hawker Siddeley trio; Harriers of I Sqn,
RAF; South African Air Force Buccaneer
S.SO of 24 Sqn with stores; and an Indian Air
Force Hunter Mk 56
to replace the Shackleton 2s of Coastal
Command. Deliveries began in October
1969 and are expected to be completed in
1971. Span 114ft lOin; length, 126ft 9in;
max gross, 178,0001b approx.
Hawker Siddeley Sea Vixen FAW.2 (Two
11,2501b Rolls-Royce Avon 208 turbojets).
The Sea Vixen has been the standard RN
fighter, but is being replaced by F-4K
Phantoms. Missile armament can comprise
Firestreaks or Red Tops. Span, 50ft; length,
55ft 7in; max speed, 560kt (approx); gross
weight, 40,0001b (approx).
Hawker Siddeley Shackleton MR.3 Srs.3
(Four 2,450 h.p. Rolls-Royce Griffon 57A
piston engines plus two 2,5001b R-R Viper
11 Mk 203 auxiliary turbojets). Three or
four RAF ASW patrol squadrons will con-
tinue operating modernised phase 3 versions
of the Shackleton MR.3 into the 1970s.
Auxiliary turbojet power provides additional
take-off boost. Span, 119ft lOin; length,
'92ft 6in; max gross, 100,0001b approx.
