1.a) A hospital is proposed to be built on a hill top near Bhopal. The height of the hillock
above the surroundings is 500 m with slope of 1 in 5. Basic wind speed in Bhopal is 39
m/s. The size of the building is 50 m 120 m with 15 m height. Compute the design
wind pressure on the building.
b) Briefly explain about the spacing of trusses, spacing of purlins, and orientation of purlins.

2. At the apex joint A of a Fink tubular roof truss, four members AB, AC, AD and AE meet
so that
0
30 BAC EAD = = and
0
60 CAD = . The length of members between the
panel points are AB =AE=3 meters. AC=AD=3.4 meters and the stresses carried are
AB=AE=190 kN compression and AC=AD =120 kN tension. Design the members and
detail the joint A.

3. Analyse the frame by factor method.

4. The effective span of a through type Pratt truss grider railway bridge for a single broad
gauge track is 50 m. Pratt truss girder consists of 10 panels @5m. The height of girder
between c.g. to c.g of chords is 7 m. The spacing between main truss girder is 7 m. The
rail level is 800 mm above the c.g. of bottom chord. The chord members are 600 mm
deep and 260 mm wide. The end posts are 600 mm deep and 644 mm wide. Determine
the increase or decrease of forces in the central chord member of the leeward truss girder
in the following cases.
a) Overturning effect due to wind, when the bridge is unloaded.
b) Lateral effects of top chord and bottom chord bracings, when the bridge is
unloaded.

5. Analyse completely the portal bracing shown in Figure, carrying a lateral load of P =400
kN.

6. Given a rectangular frame of uniform section whose plastic moment capacity is Mp. How
much will be the ultimate load carried by the frame in combined mechanism the frame is
shown in Figure? Sketch BM distribution at collapse.

7.a) Briefly explain about moment balancing method.
b) Compute the ultimate load for the continuous beam shown in Figure. Perform moment
balancing operation and draw the BMD.

8. A Propped cantilever of uniform plastic moment capacity is subjected to a udl of w kg.
per meter. Compute the deflection at ultimate load by assuming the last hinge to form in
the beam portion.
