Vice Admiral Anil Chopra takes charge as the Western Naval Commander

Vice admiral Anil Chopra, took chanrge as the flag officer commanding-in-chief of
the Western Naval Command (WNC). The ceremonial parade was held at INS Shikra, Mumbai. He
succeeded Vice admiral Shekhar Sinha who took voluntary retirement on April 21, 2014.
Previous to his appointment, Vice admiral Chopra was the director general Indian Coast
Guard. Under his controls, the Coast Guard observed an exponential surge in both its force levels,
and operational dispositions. Chopra who got commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1975, had
also been been the fleet commander of the Navys Sword Arm the Western Fleet in 2008.
India Elected to the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of
the Intangible Cultural Heritage

In the elections to the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural
Heritage, held on June 4, 2014 at UNESCO Headquarters, Paris by the General Assembly of member
states, India has been elected for the next 4 years (2014-2018). Out of the 142 member states
present and voting, India won a decisive 135 votes. India got the maximum number of votes midst the
ten nations that fought the election and won.
The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage has
24 members who are chosen for a term of 4 years. The primary tasks of the Committee are to protect
the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), safeguarding esteem for the intangible cultural heritage of
nations, groups and individuals, as also to increase responsiveness at the local, national
andinternational levels of the significance of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
India has been elected to the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible
Cultural Heritage for the second time (previous term being from 2006-2010).
