Letter from the Director
I cannot believe that Ive already been here for four
months; the time is really ying by as we move forward
with improvements both internal and external at the San
Diego Art Institute. Over the next few weeks youll start
to see the incorporation of a few new public programs,
while remaining true to our core vision of serving the
local arts community and our members across San
Diego and beyond. In all my many meetings with peer
organizations and artists from Los Angeles to Tijuana,
the same statement keeps coming upwhat San Diego
really needs is a great municipal art gallery, and we have
a unique opportunity to ll that role. But what does a
municipal art gallery in the 21st Century look like? How can
we create programs that engage local artists but maintain
global relevancy? The Board, staff and I are going to be
addressing these questions and more as we look forward
to rebranding our organization, relaunching our website
this fall, and reclaiming our identity as The San Diego
Art InstituteTHE premier organization directly serving
artists and diverse communities from the Southern
California/Baja Norte region. In this process we welcome
member feedback and suggestions, so please feel free to
contact me with any programs or improvements that you
would like to see incorporated into our strategic plan.
The rst new program that youll see is the launch of our
rotating artist and curator residency program (application
enclosedplease share!). Approximately every three
months we will invite a selected artist or curator to San
Diego through a competitive application process. The
artists will be asked to create new work, actively engage
with artists in San Diego, and present their work through
exhibitions, workshops, and lectures. After the pilot
of this program in the fall, we will invite a curator for a
short residency to do studio visits with local artists, lead
professional development workshops, and jury a show at
SDAI in 2015.
We also will be dramatically expanding our public
programs schedule. In addition to our semi-weekly Life
Drawing at SDAI event on Sunday and Monday evenings,
we will have more lectures, workshops, and performances
Artist-in-Residence Program
In the fall of 2014, San Diego Art Institute is launching its rst
Artist-in-Residence Program in our North Park location. Artists
working in all media and at any stages of their career are welcome
to apply for an approximate 2.5-month residency from October
1 through December 20, 2014. The selected Artist-in-Residence
will receive a private, 200 sq. ft. studio space to create new work,
culminating in a presentation of their work at both the San Diego
Art Institute in Balboa Park and the San Diego Art Department
in North Park. Artists will work independently alongside other
artists in the studios. The selected Artist-in-Residence will be
required to spend a minimum of 20 hours/week working in their
Beyond Limits
For our October 2014 exhibition Beyond Limits,
SDAI has invited artists near and far to create site-
specic installations regarding the post-global future.
In our post-global future, we envision a society in
which there are no boundaries between the local and
the global, and we invite you to collaborate and help
these artists realize their projects. Help artist Cesar
Cornejo build his Urban Mountain by collecting and
saving discarded furniture and materials, assist in the
actual creation of artists work at SDAI in September,
or host artists in your home! To nd out more about
how you can participate in realizing this large-scale,
multi-national exhibition, please contact Ginger at
director@sandiego-art.org.

Dogs & One Robot

I seem to have an afnity with small dogs which is understandable
since I am the runt of my litter. I prefer to paint dogs because there is
much more variety than the human gure. This show is where I can share
my dog paintings & a few of them may nd a new home.

Landscapes
My work is inspired by the natural world. The images come from reality,
but it is mostly imagination that fuels their creation. Working between
realistic expression and abstraction, I often focus on light to dene the
mood to reect a stillness, to capture a moment.
I feel especially connected to nature with my encaustic work. The
quick hardening of the wax encourages and demands from me greater
spontaneity and abstraction. I nd this challenge exciting and creative.

MID-CENTURY OMELET:
Scrambled Eggs, Art, and Absurdity
A Performance Art Piece
Conceived and Directed by Michael Robertson
August 14 - 7:00 pm - Doors open at 6:30 pm
The performance piece is a MID-CENTURY OMELET: a celebration and explora-
tion of the 1950s and 1960s using a mixture of poetry, words, music, spontaneous
painting, cooking of food, and movement throughout the space. The cacophony of
words, music, poetry, live performers, and mixed media will confront the specta-
tors with time and space, and provide a platform for unsettling and humorous,
yet hard to explain, visual imagery with a range of live art including elements of
theatre, cabaret, music, painting, and storytelling.

During the course of the residency, we will arrange for frequent
visits by area curators to the artists studio, and artists will be

July Juror, Kateri ONeil
Having been of the artistic persua-
sion since she orchestrated her rst
art show at the age of seven, Kateri
went on to incorporate her love for lm,
music, and literature into her artistic
practice, catalyzing the synergies be-
tween these complementary creative
spheres. A self-professed polymath,
Kateri decided to embrace a career as
a multi-hyphenate rather than forsake
any of her passions, shifting between
roles as a curator, writer, lmmaker, art
director, production designer, graph-
ic designer, stylist, and installation
artist whilst working on her own creative projects. As the Founder and
Creative Director of Aesthetics Unlimited, Kateri has done everything
from curating a poetry festival in Ramallah, producing a short lm thats
been making the festival rounds, and producing pop-up galleries dur-
ing The Armory Show, to directing music videos, styling commercials,
designing yers, and writing curated cultural content. In addition to
serving as the Managing Editor of Flavorpill LA, Kateri is currently
developing multiple documentary lm projects, writing short stories, and
creating several art lms and music videos.
SDAI Submission
Guidelines
On a regular basis, SDAI asks artists to submit
work for juried, themed, and curated exhibitions.
On average, a new exhibition is featured every six
weeks. Typically, each exhibition consists of work
submitted by regional artists, in addition to two
artist solo exhibitions. Artists may enter up to two
artworks per show. While there are no limitations on
medium, please check with SDAI if you are submitting
work that is over 8 in any direction, is over 50 lbs.,
or requires any particular AV equipment.
