QUESTION 1 [15 marks]

(a) Air at a given state enters a compressor operating at steady state and is compressed
adiabatically to a specified higher pressure. Would you expect the power input to the
compressor to be greater in an internally reversible compression or an actual
compression? Explain. [4 marks]
(b) Describe the similarities and differences between the Carnot Heat Engine Cycle and
Carnot Refrigeration Cycle. [4 marks]
(c) An inventor claims that, based on his measurements, a heat engine receives 300 kJ of
heat from a source of 500 K, converts 160 kJ of it to work, and rejects the rest as waste
heat to a sink at 300 K. Are these measurements reasonable? Why? [7 marks]

QUESTION 2 [15 marks]

A well-insulated turbine is operating at steady state. Steam enters its inlet at 3 MPa and
400C, with a volumetric flow rate of 85 m
3
/min. The steam is expanded until it exits the
turbine at 0.5 MPa and 200C before entering an adiabatic mixing chamber. The steam is
mixed isobarically with saturated liquid water at 20C that is flowing at a mass flow rate of
50 kg/s. Neglecting the kinetic and potential energy effect, determine:
(a) The mass flow rate of steam at turbine inlet (in kg/s), [3 marks]
(b) The power produced by the turbine (in MW), [6 marks]
(c) The temperature of water after mixing (in C). [6 marks]

QUESTION 3 [15 marks]

A 50-m
3
piston cylinder assembly contains 1 kg helium at 50 kPa. The helium undergoes a
cycle as described below:
Process 1-2: Isothermal compression until its pressure doubles,
Process 2-3: Isentropic expansion,
Process 3-1: Isobaric expansion back to its initial state.
Determine the followings:
(a) The temperature after isentropic expansion process (in C), [3 marks]
(b) The volume after isentropic expansion process (in m
3
), [3 marks]
(c) The entropy change in the isobaric expansion process (in kJ/K), [3 marks]
(d) The net work done by the cycle (in kJ). [6 marks]
