Taking lessons from the past experience of earthquakes in India
which stress upon the need to make houses earthquake-resistant, the
Centre had initiated a countrywide awareness program in 2002 to
provide basic training about the earthquake-resistant structures to
civil engineers, architects and the owners of buildings.
Continuing with its programme, a weeklong training on "Capacity
Building of Engineers in Earthquake Risk Management' started at
Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College on Monday.
Addressing the training programme, Dr J N Jha, Professor, Civil
Engineering Department, Punjab, said Ludhiana and a major part of
Punjab come under the seismic zone IV where a building with shear
walls was preferred.
Dr Jha trained engineers about constructing buildings while keeping
in view the earthquake. He said light buildings are more earthquake
resistant, and the symmetry of a building ensures minimum damage.
"Earthquake resistant buildings should be designed which means
controlling the damage to acceptable levels at a reasonable cost.
Beams and columns in the open ground storey are required to be
designed for 2.5 times the forces obtained from the bare frame analysis, in column where the
spacing between the corner bars exceeds 300mm, additional link with 180 degree links are
necessary to prevent the 135 degree tie from bulging outwards.
The base isolation device and seismic dampers can be used to protect the building from damaging
earthquake effects," he said.
