Afullguidewrittenforbeginners,tosetupaDynamicDNSshortcut/hostnamefor
accesstoSwannDVRsoninternetconnectionswithadynamicIPaddress.

Problem:YouhaveabroadbandinternetconnectionwithaDynamicPublicIPAddress(sometimescalledaDynamicWANIP
AddressoraDynamicInternetAddress).YouusuallyneedtoknowwhatyourmodemorroutersPublicIPAddressisinorderto
connecttoitfromaremotelocation,thiscreatesabitofaproblemifitischangingatrandom.

Solution:UsingaserviceprovidedbyacompanycalledDynDNS.com,weareabletouseahostnametoconnecttotheDVR.The
hostnameactslikeashortcutwhichalwaystakesusbacktoyourmodemsInternetIPAddressandthereforetheDVR,evenifithas
changed.Weareabletodothisbytellingtherouter,modemoracomputerconnectedtotheroutertokeepDynDNS.comupdated
withyourmodemslatestInternetIPAddress.Ideally,youshouldntneedtousethisprocessandshouldbeusingaStaticInternetIP
address,simplymeaningthatitneverchanges.Unfortunatelythisusuallymeansyouwouldhavetopayaheftyextramonthlyfee.
Theadvantagetousingthismethodisthatitisfreeofcharge.Thereareafewthingsyouwillneedtoconsider:

Youmustbeusingabroadband/highspeed/DSL/CableinternetconnectionforthelocationoftheDVRorIPCamera,and
forthelocationyouwanttoconnectfrom.
IdeallyyoushouldhavearouterthatsupportsDDNSorDynamicDNS.Ifyouareunsure,checkthedocumentationprovided
withyourrouteroryourroutermanufacturerswebsite.
YouwillneedtodothesestepswhileyouareonsitewiththeDVR,dontdothemfromaremotelocation.

ThisguidehasthreemethodsforusingDynamicDNS.TheregistrationprocesswithDynDNS.comisthesameforallthreemethods,
soyoushouldfollowuptostep10Aregardlessofyourconfiguration.

A. ThisisthebestmethodofmakingsurethatyourhostnamepointstothecorrectrouterInternetIPAddress,astherouter
automaticallyupdatestheDynDNS.comserverseachtimeitsInternetIPAddresschanges.MostDLink,NetGear,Linksys,
Actiontek&BelkinbrandrouterssupportDynDNSbydefault.
B. IfyouhavearouterthatdoesnotsupportDDNSorDynamicDNS,thenweneedtoinstallaprogramonacomputeronthe
samenetworkastheDVRorIPCamerathatperiodicallysendsInternetIPAddressinformationtotheDynDNS.comservers
tokeepthemuptodate.Thismethodislessdesirablebecauseyouhavetohavethecomputerswitchedonandworkingso
thatitcankeeptherouterInternetIPAddressinformationcorrectontheDynDNS.comservers.2Wire,Westell,and
MotorolaroutersareusuallylessaccommodatingwhenitcomestobuiltinDDNSorDynamicDNSsupport,thismeansyou
cannotusemethodAanditislikelyyouwillneedtousethismethodinstead.
C. Thedeviceyouaretryingtoconnectto(suchasaDVR)hasDDNSsupport,inwhichcaseyousimplyentertheDynDNS
detailsintotheDVRandletitdotheupdatingforyou.
