PHI I Axiology

Introduction to Philosophy
Axiology- from the word axia meaning
values or worth. It is the study of
values, its nature, its kind and its conflict.

Triumvirate Values
- The true, the good and the
beautiful

Actuality of Values
- It becomes actual when recognized
by the subject (by a person)
- Ex. Stone is just something you
just see in the road but becomes
valuable when you see a stone that
can be sold or used as display.

Transcendentalism & Relativism

a. Transcendental values- they are
beyond changing times, space and
people. They are universal. Classic
example is the value of life.
b. Relative Values- No value is
universal. Values are dependent
on time and place.

b.a.Coventionalism- axiological
reality is based on the uniqueness
of cultures. Example is monogamy
versus polygamy.

Occidental Values- values of the
western hemisphere like
materialism, consumerism,
independence and autonomy.
Oriental Values- values of the
eastern hemisphere like frugality,
immaterialism, interdependence
and the emphasis on the collective.

Dimensions of Values

1. Cognitive- we have to know why
we value such
2. Affective- either we feel good or
bad about a particular value.
Example is when we feel good
towards honest people and feel
bad towards liars.
3. Behavioral- living by the value is
the true acid test if we really value
something.

Max SchelersHierarchy of Values
- According to the proponent, life is
well lived if we do not distort the
hierarchy because when we do, we
undergo values confusion.

Are values taught or caught?
Both. We teach honesty in class by
reminding students of the consequences
of dishonesty. On the other hand, it is
caught. For instance, you see your mother
making sacrifices for your family and you
realize that you should also do.

Axiological Implications
1. Affirmative- positive effect of
adhering to that value.

unintended consequences of
values.
