Exercising dogs on the Coast

Your dog = Your responsibility
This fact sheet provides some information to
help you and your dog enjoy our beautiful coast
and provide a safe and enjoyable environment
for all residents and visitors.
Be a responsible pet owner
Here are our top five tips to responsible pet
ownership:
1. Register your dog every year and ensure
your contact information is current. You can
update your details online!
2. Microchip your dog.
3. Ensure your dog is contained to your
property by providing a suitable enclosure.
4. Pick up your dogs faeces and dispose of
the bag in an appropriate manner.
5. Keep your dog quiet excessive barking
could upset neighbours which may result in
costly legal action.
Where can I exercise my dog?
All dogs must be kept on a leash when in
public space, unless in a designated off-leash
area where they may be exercised without
restraint.
The following rules apply when using off-
leash areas on the Sunshine Coast:
Dog faeces must be removed and disposed
of properly.
Dogs must not interfere with any other
recreational users.
Declared dangerous dogs are prohibited in
off-leash areas.
Dogs are not allowed within children's
playground areas or picnic/barbeque areas.
In all other areas, where permitted, dogs
must be on a lead at all times, otherwise
fines apply.
Dogs must be within close proximity of the
owner and be responsive to their
commands.
Dogs must be under effective control, this
means they are:
o under the direct supervision of a person
o not harassing, intimidating, attacking,
stalking, mounting or body slamming
another animal or person.
Check for dog signs
Council has installed signage throughout the
region to regulate dog activities. Please make
yourself familiar with this signage and ensure
you comply - that way everyone gets to enjoy
the public space as intended.
Note: As it would be unsightly and impractical
to have signage everywhere, if you are unable to
locate dog signage, your dog must be on a leash at
all times. If you have your dog off-leash in an on-
leash area you may face a fine of $220.

Take care of our community
Dog owners should always carry and use a bag
to pick up their dogs waste. To help those dog
owners who have forgotten to bring their own
bags, Council provides dog tidy bins/bag
dispensers for the removal of dog waste.
Dispensers and waste bins are located
throughout the Sunshine Coast in parks and in
particular the areas in close to the beach. The
bags used in the dispensers are biodegradable.
Note: It is an offence to walk or exercise your
dogs in public without carrying a bag with you.
The offence carries an on-the-spot fine of $220.
