Sari

by eileen pierce

Difficulty: Intermediate

The sari my auntie wore to my cousin’s

wedding was the inspiration for these
beaded garter stitch wrist-warmers.

Techniques used include bead knitting and Kitchener stitch finishing, as taught
by Carol Huebscher Rhoades.

PATTERN NOTES
To place beads onto knitting yarn, thread a beading needle with a fine but strong
piece of sewing thread about 3 inches long. Tie the ends of the sewing thread
together to form a loop. Thread the knitting yarn through the loop of sewing
thread. Pour loose beads into a shallow container with vertical sides. Dive the
beading needle into the beads, picking up several at a time. Move the beads
onto the knitting yarn by sliding them down the needle, over the sewing thread,
and onto the knitting yarn. Slide groups of beads down the yarn quite a ways,
distributing them so that they are ready to knit up later.

Knit firmly throughout. Place beads between stitches on odd numbered rows
only, as indicted on the chart.

PATTERN
Cast on 37 stitches over both needles held together. Long-tail cast on method is
recommended.

Set up row: knit across row to 2 stitches remaining, P2tog. From this point
forward, begin each row by slipping the first stitch knitwise with yarn in back, knit
across to the last stitch, and purl the last stitch.

In garter stitch, work rows 1 through 16 of chart for a total of 7 [8, 9] times or to
desired length, ending with a wrong side row (even numbered row).

FINISHING
With right side facing, pick up 36 stitches from back to front across the cast-on
edge. Graft the two sets of stitches together firmly with Kitchener stitch. Weave
in ends. Hand wash gently, air dry flat on towel.
