Job Title: Superintendent Job Description: Chief Executive Officer of the Madison County Board of Education with those duties set forth for superintendents Alabama Code 16-9-1 et seq. and by the school board. Required qualifications: Alabama law requires the superintendent be chosen for general fitness and character and that he or she have a recognized ability as a school administrator. The law also requires the successful applicant have: An Alabama certificate in administration and supervision; At least five years experience in public school work when taking office; Three years successful educational experience as a teacher, principal, supervisor, superintendent, educational administrator or instructor in school administration during the five years next preceding the appointment; and A degree from a recognized four-year college or university. The superintendent need not be a resident or qualified elector of the county. Desired traits: A doctorate is preferred but is not necessarily a limiting factor. Desired traits include: Belief that all children can learn and a demonstrated ability to improve achievement; Knowledge and experience in managing budgets and financial affairs; Ability to manage a diverse and aggressively improving system; Able to work with and generate support from the entire board; Commitment to long-range planning; Analytical and problem-solving expertise and skill at making data-driven decisions; Ability to lead the administrative team and evaluate personnel and programs effectively; and Commitment to ensuring safe schools and engaging the community. Additional information: The Madison County superintendent is an elected position. However, due to the retirement of the current superintendent, the school board will appoint a superintendent to complete the unexpired term. Thus, the contract will end December 31, 2014. The person chosen through this search may choose to run for election to the position at that time.
