Matthew 4:19 PASTORS CORNER
Last week-end, we learned from the Scriptures that any person who wants to search and do the will of God, would have to be humble! Jesus invited us to take up our crosses and follow Him with humility. I am meek and humble of heart. Humility is a basic virtue on which we can build a real and lasting relationship with God and with one another.
This week-end, we are asked to accept Gods grace and work to make the grace of God fruitful in our lives. Isaiah says the grace of God will allow the seed to grow on fertile soil. Jesus, in the Gospel speaks about the sower and the seeds that fell on soil of various de- grees of fertility. We are asked to have the ability to al- low Gods grace to grow in us. We are expected to re- ceive Gods grace and provide the fertility that brings abundant growth.
Right at the beginning of the Bible, God had made it known to our first parents, that it would be through the sweat of their brows that they would have to earn their living. Somehow, when there is a price reduction or sale, we all rush to take advantage. When we think of it seriously, there is nothing free except LOVE. God loves us for free. We love one another, but because of our hu- man nature, there is always a give and take attitude, even when we love others. Taking freely what does not belong to us, is an attitude that is presented to us by politicians, not by Christ. We must be responsible. We must work hard. We must produce whatever we can to be successful in life. We must love just like God. Fr Sebastian BE YOU FRUITFUL Our Lady of Mount Carmel Hermits lived on Mount Carmel near the Fountain of Elijah (northern Israel) in the 12th century. They had a chapel dedicated to Our Lady. By the 13th century they became known as Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. They soon celebrated a special Mass and Office in honor of Mary. In 1726 it became a celebration of the universal Church under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. For centuries the Carmelites have seen themselves as specially related to Mary. Their great saints and theologians have promoted devotion to her and often championed the mystery of her Immaculate Conception. St. Teresa of Avila (October 15) called Carmel the Order of the Virgin. St. John of the Cross (December 14) credited Mary with saving him from drowning as a child, leading him to Carmel and helping him escape from prison. St. Theresa of the Child Jesus (October 1) believed that Mary cured her from illness. On her First Communion, she dedicated her life to Mary. During the last days of her life she frequently spoke of Mary. There is a tradition (which may not be historical) that Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock, a leader of the Carmelites, and gave him a scapular, telling him to promote devotion to it. The scapular is a modified version of Marys own gar- ment. It symbolizes her special protection and calls the wearers to consecrate themselves to her in a special way. In the days when states were still the colonies and men wore powdered wigs, a new way of thinking captured the intelligentsia of the western world. The miracle sto- ries in the Bible and the lives of the saints may be quaint, entertaining, and even have symbolic meaning. But cer- tainly we should not take them literally! Oh, God exists, for sure. But if the Creator made such a marvelous world, humming along according to the laws of nature which he designed, why would he ever step in and work against those rules? So lets not be naive.
Thomas Jefferson went so far as to take scissors and cut all the supernatural stories right out of his Bible, leaving only the moral teaching of Jesus. Others insisted on keep- ing their bible intact, but reading the miracle stories with a nod and a wink, just like they read Greek mythol- ogy. This movement, known as the Enlightenment, was just too sophisticated to take literally such primitive fan- tasy.
To tell the truth, the Enlightenment raised a very good question. Why would the creator of nature violate natural laws? Perhaps because not everything we experience in this fallen world is so natural after all. The first chapter of the Book of Wisdom tells us that death is really not natural. God designed human beings to live forever. It was by the envy of the devil that death came into the world, and the spiritual death resulting from the sin of our first parents had a disastrous impact on all of crea- tion. One of the foremost Enlightenment philosophers, Gottfried Leibniz, said that the world we live in was the best of all possible worlds. Genesis and the book of Wis- dom beg to differ. So perhaps God works miracles, and defies seemingly natural laws, to restore nature, to rescue his crea- tion from the degradation and misery that sin has let loose in the world. Plus, in the case of truly natural laws, if He created nature, he is above na- ture. Nature comes from the Latin word for birth. Nature is that which has been born, which has come into existence. Our God, unlike the gods of the Greek and Roman myths, has no beginning or end. He was, He is, and He is to come. He is there- fore transcendent, above nature, super-natural.
This is the point Marks gospel is making when it tells us about Jesus calming the storm, healing the woman with the flow of blood, and raising Jairus daughter (Mark 5:21-43). Standing in front of Jesus, we are in the presence of Mystery. He does not plead or conjure or recite incantations. He does supernatu- ral things not through petition but by word of com- mand. Sophisticated skepticism is a useless response to Him. So is fear. If I want to experience the sav- ing, life-giving power that He offers me, the only use- ful and appropriate response is faith. Before the tragedies and challenges of life in this imperfect world, this is what faith says: I cant, He can, and I think Ill let Him.
Many children were ill in Palestine on that day. But Jairus believed that Jesus could do something about the sickness assaulting his daughter, and let him, de- spite the ridicule of his friends. Many adults physi- cally touched Jesus on that day as he made his way through the crowd, but only one woman believed Je- sus could heal her. She had the boldness to reach out and touch him with expectant faith, and healing power flowed out of him, changing her life forever. If the Eucharist is truly the Body and Blood of this supernatural miracle worker, why we dont see more healing, miracles, and sanctification going on in the lives of communicants?
Maybe its because many who shuffle forward in communion lines each Sunday are like the nameless people who bumped into Jesus in the square but were too busy to notice and too jaded to expect any- thing. Or maybe its because were just too enlightened to take such quaint Bible stories too seriously.
