Connected-car services are delivered to moving assets on the road and so are in the
natural domain of mobile cellular networks. Mobile network operators (MNOs) have long
been providers of SIM cards for afermarket navigaton, vehicle tracking and eet-
management services. Now this connectvity is being embedded in the vehicle and module
makers are shipping ruggedized LTE components to producton lines around the world.
The inital incentve was to meet the demands of regulaton. Europes eCall legislaton
requires that new vehicles on the road from 2015 should be capable of triggering an
emergency assistance call in the event of a crash. Similarly, afer numerous delays, Brazil has
implemented its mandate that new cars should feature telematcs for Stolen Vehicle
Recovery (SVR). While narrowband telematcs is essental for these applicatons, the
challenge for the MNOs is to convince the automotve industry of the broader business case.
OEMs are exploring the benets of shifing their business models from being highly
product-centric towards a more service-centric approach (see g.). On-board telematcs
help build closer relatonships with vehicle owners, even as the car is sold on to new
drivers. By provisioning a hardware gateway in the car, OEMs aim to win back the customer
relatonship from afermarket service providers and independent garages the automotve
equivalent of OTT.
